Chapter 10

I was getting so lost in the song as I was dancing with Cole, I hardly noticed Josh walking toward us.

"Mind if I cut in?"

"Uh, Cole?" I said nervously.

"It's okay, Alexa. You'll be fine. I'll be outside if you need me."

As Josh and I continued to dance, I felt even more nervous. And uncomfortable.

"Nervous, huh?" he asked. "Don't worry. I don't bite."

"Um, okay?"

I started to feel a little better after he said that.

Until he started making moves on me.

"Uh, Josh, what are you doing?"

"Come on, baby. I told you I don't bite."

"Josh, you know I'm with Cole."

"Aww, come on. It's not like you're serious."

"Well, we are now." I tried pushing him away from me, but he wouldn't budge, Then he started trying to kiss me.

"Josh, get off me!" I yelled.

"Come on, Alexa. You know you want me."

He started coming closer and closer. Almost forcing me to step backwards.

All of a sudden, I saw everyone staring at me. With tears in my eyes, I ran outside and searched for Cole. I didn't notice Josh running after me until I felt a hand pull me back.

"You don't run from me, bitch!" Josh said with an angry look on his face.

I started feeling really scared, so I clenched my fist and punched him in the nose. Then I saw Cole running toward us.

"Are you okay, babe?"

"Yeah. I'm fine."

"Get away from her, Josh!" he said, clenching his fists. Then suddenly, I saw them flying. Cole started swinging and punching Josh everywhere he could. And Josh was taking all the hits. It didn't even look like he was defending himself.

Cole was starting to scare me , so I tried to stop him.

"Cole, stop. You're hurting him!" I yelled.

"Alexa, back off! He deserves it!"

"Cole, I said stop." I tried getting him off Josh, but no such luck.

"And I said back off!" To my surprise, he pushed me back, knocking me to the ground.

When he realized what he had done, he looked at his hands, which were bruised and bloody. Then he looked down at me.

"C-Cole?" I looked at him in astonishment. I had never seen a side of him like that before, and I didn't like it.

When I looked at Josh, his face was bleeding, and his right eye was swollen shut.

"Alexa, I...I..."

'Cole, how could you do that?" I said as I walked off.

"Alexa, wait. Please."

"Cole, don't. I'm gonna go find Emma so we can take care of Josh. Maybe you should go home."

Monday at lunch, I saw Cole walking up to our table.
"Hey, Alexa. Um, can we talk?"
"Fine. Come on."
When we got outside and sat down, he started to open his mouth to speak, but I beat him to it.
"Cole. look. I know you were just trying to protect me. But you went too far. Josh didn't deserve that. I mean you said so yourself he was like that with all the girls."
"But not like that. I'm sorry for what I did. And I'm sorry I pushed you. I shouldn't have acted like that. But when I saw what he was doing, I blacked out. I just couldn't stand seeing his hands on you."
"I know, Cole. And you're right. You shouldn't have acted like that. Josh even apologized for how he acted after you left."
"Uh, how is he?"
"He's fine. Just a cut on his lip, and he's gonna have a black eye for a while. But I think you need to apologize to him, too. I appreciate you trying to protect me, though."
"Yeah, you're right. And thank you. So, um, does that mean you forgive me?"
"I didn't say that, Cole. I, um, I think I just need some space."
"I understand. I acted like a monster at the party. And I'm sorry."
"I'm gonna be late for Algebra." I unclipped the necklace and placed it in his hands. "Goodbye, Cole."
I felt really bad about how I ended things. He really was a sweet guy, and I did appreciate what he tried to do. But I couldn't be with someone who used violence to solve problems.
When I got home, I saw Maddie had tried to call me while I was at school. I went up to my room and called her back.
"Hey, girl," she answered. "How's everything going with Cole?"
"Not so good." I told her about what happened at Josh's party and that I told Cole I needed space.
"Wow, that's awful. But, um, he did try to protect you."
"Ugh, why does everyone keep saying that?" I already felt guilty enough as it is. Emma told me I shouldn't have broken up with him, and now Maddie was telling me he was only trying to be a good boyfriend and protect me.
"Sorry, Alexa. I mean it is awful that he just beat up his friend for hitting on you and putting his hands on you. And I know you don't like that kind of thing. Just hang in there, okay?"
"I will. Thanks, girl."
"Hey, what are friends for? Well, I gotta go."
"Okay. Bye, Maddie."
