When we got to the theater Saturday, Emma insisted Cole and I sit together. I felt a little awkward and nervous, but I liked being around him, so I didn't object.
As we sat in the theater, I kept looking over at Cole and admiring how handsome he was, with his hair slicked back and wearing a short-sleeved, black polo shirt and dark pants. I was feeling more and more attracted to him.
When the movie was over, we went to grab a pizz by the pier. After about an hour, Emma said she had to head home and get some studying done.
As Cole and I sat eating pizza and talking, I started to feel more relaxed and not so tense or nervous. And I realized I was ready to give him a chance and ready for a relationship.
All of a sudden, I heard music over the restaurant speaker, and Cole got up and offered me his hand.
"Um, wanna dance?"
"I'd love to."
As we danced to the flow of the music, I got lost in his eyes. I hadn't noticed before, but they were the most piercing shade of blue.
As I looked into his eyes, I noticed he had a nervous look on his face.
"Um , I think it's getting kinda late. Maybe I should take you home."
"Uh, yeah. Let's go."
Whe we arrived at my house, he walked me to the door. He still looked nervous.
"Um, I had fun with you tonight," he said, looking down.
"Me too. Um, Cole, there's something I want to tell you."
"Well, we've been hanging out a lot, and we've both been through really bad breakups. When I came to California, I wasn't sure if I was ready for another relationship. I was still healing from my breakup with Kyle. But you and Emma helped me through it and helped me get over him. Especially you."
"You guys have become my best friends. And over the last few months, I've become more and more attracted to you. You're sweet, kind, funny, and smart. I really like you, Cole. And I'm ready to get back out there and give you a chance."
I'm still not ready"Really?"
"Aww, Alexa. I'm ready to get back out there, too. Thank you."
"So, uh, what now?"
"Hmm. Well, how about we go to the beach tomorrow? We can walk along the pier and watch the sunset."
"I think that sounds like a perfect first date."
"Awesome. Well, I should go. Goodnight, Alexa."
As I watched him drive away, I was glad I made the decision to give him a chance."
The next day, as I was getting ready for my date with Cole, I heard the doorbell ring.
"Can you get it, Mom?" I called out. "I'm still not ready."
I knew it was just Cole, but I was still nervous, and I wanted to look perfect. I spent three hours trying to put together the perfect outfit. I finally settled on a spaghetti-strap lavender shirt that showed a little midriff, a knee-length pink denim skirt, and white strappy wedges.
After I was done curling my hair and putting on my makeup, I walked downstairs ans spotted Cole in the living room. He was wearing a blue polo shirt and tan slacks. When he looked my way, his jaw almost dropped.
"Wow. You look...wow."
"Haha, thanks. You don't look so bad yourself. Not your usual look, though."
"Well, I don't always dress like a rebel."
"I can see that. You clean up good."
"Shall we?" he said, holding his arm out.
When Cole and I got to the pier, he led me to a nearby diner. It almost looked like the one Kyle and I went to when we first met.
"Um, Cole, this diner kinda looks like...um..."
"Does it remind you of Kyle?"
"Do you wanna go somewhere else?"
"No. I'm fine. I'm completely over him. And I'm with you. It's okay."
I was having a great time enjoying my meal with Cole and laughing and talking with him. It was turning out to be a really fun date.
"Hey, come on," he said. "It's almost sunset."
As we walked along the pier, I couldn't help but look over at him. I never thought I would feel this way about anyone else. But Cole made me feel like myself again. Like I could get through anything.
All of a sudden, I noticed the sun going down. The sky filled with red, orange, and gold. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen before.
"Aww, Cole. It's beautiful. I could look at this sunset forever."
"Really? Because I see something more beautiful than the sunset."
He took me in his arms and held me close. I felt so safe with him. More safe than I did with Kyle. But I didn't wanna think about that now. All I could think about was being with Cole and enjoying my date with him.
After the date, Cole drove me home and gave me a kiss goodnight on the cheek. We both agreed to take things slow and not rush anything.
When I walked through the door, I ran to my room and immediately called Emma.
"Hey, Alexa. How did the date go?"
"It was great. Perfect actually. Thanks for encouraging me to give him a chance."
"You're so welcome. So are you two together now?"
"I don't know yet. We agreed to take things slowand see how it goes."
"Well, I have a feeling everything is gonna go well."
"I think you're getting ahead of yourself, Emma. I gotta go. I have to call Maddie. See you tomorrow."
After I got off the phone with Emma, I called Maddie and told her all about the date.
"That's great, Alexa. I'm glad you're getting back out there. And Cole sounds like a really sweet guy. He seems good for you."
"Thanks, Mads. Well, I'd better go. I have some studying I need to finish. I'll talk to you later."
