Chapter 36

“What do you mean she’s your sister? You remember her?” The moment those words left my mouth Thanatos pulled me from the room and out into the hallway. He could tell I was shaken up.

“I don’t remember her, but I-I think the phoenix does.” He was staring at me like I’d grown a second head, at this point I wouldn’t be surprised if I did. Was that the phoenix voice I heard? Or have I finally gone crazy?

Thanatos was about to say something when Draco appeared out of nowhere. “I sensed your distress, are you ok?” He walked up to me, eyes scanning over my body looking for any physical damage.

Thanatos raised an eyebrow at him. “How the hell did you get here?”

Draco frowned at him, as if he should already know the answer. I was also curious how he got here. “No matter where Isabel is located I can get to her. Where are we Isabel?”

I shrugged. “Tartarus apparently.”

“And what has you upset?”

“I think my sister is here.” Did Draco ever see my sister? Was he around at that time? Maybe he can confirm if it’s her or not.

He shook his head. “That’s not possible.”

“S-something told me it was her.” Please don’t ask what.

“What?” I sighed. Time to sound crazy again. I recapped what happened to Draco. “The phoenix is getting stronger.” He nodded.

“Wait, so that was the phoenix I heard? What do you mean she’s getting stronger?” What if she decides to take over my body again?

“The more that you accept what you are the stronger your bond will be with the phoenix. You’ve always been able to communicate with each other, I thought you had already accessed that power. It is why I never brought it up. When did this start?”

“Before I entered the building she spoke to me. Not a full sentence though, just short statements. Like saying that was my sister.”

Draco froze. “If the phoenix said she’s your sister then that’s your sister. But it doesn’t make any sense. You killed her when you were younger, how could she still be alive?” He started pacing back and forth in deep thought.

“Well there’s only one way to find out.” I nodded my head towards the door. Draco nodded in agreement.

We turned to walk through the door when another voice joined. “Why are we in Tartarus?” We all turned simultaneously to see Hades standing there.

Thanatos threw his arms up in frustration. “You have got to be kidding me.”

“How did you get here?” I asked him.

“I was having a conversation with Draco when he disappeared, so I followed him.”

“How did you follow him?” Thanatos asked.

He shrugged. “I’ve known him a long time, I have my ways.” I sometimes forget that Hades has known Draco for almost as long as he’s known me. Who knows what other tricks he’s learned. “So, what’s going on here?”

We all looked at each other, before Draco finally cleared his throat choosing to answer. “Isabel sister is in there.”

Hades frowned. “That can’t be.”

“Well it can be and it is. Now can we get this over with already.” Thanatos asked, sounding impatient.

“I agree we need to get to the bottom of this.” Draco nodded. That settles it then. Once again we made our way to the door. Draco went in first, followed by Thanatos me and Hades. Hades gasped when he saw the glaring girl.

“Oh great, you brought your pet and dysfunctional husband.” She laughed. It was a bitter laugh with no humor what so ever.

I blushed when she referred to Hades as my husband. “He’s not-, we’re not-” Thanatos cut me off during my stammering.

“How are you alive?” He demanded. I thought being nice would be a better approach but apparently not.

“Oh now you want to question me? How high has my importance gone up being related to that freak?” She winked at him. The wink didn’t make sense with the words she delivered. Maybe it was an inside joke with herself? Draco stepped forward when she called me a freak, Hades had to pull him back.

“I’m going to ask you one last time? How are you alive?”

“Why don’t you come over here and find out?” She challenged him, a dark look in her eyes.

“We can just slay her and once I consume her brains I’ll have the answers.” Draco offered. Did he really just offer to eat her brains?

“Or we can just force it out of her.” Hades suggested. “A possession perhaps?” Did I really spend decades with these two? However did I survive?

Thanatos ignored them both, walking towards her. Her next words stopped his advances though.

“How cute, you thought I was talking to you.” She shifted her eyes on me. “I’m talking to the murderer.” Well as far as insults go I’m sure she could’ve said worse. Count my blessings, not. She’s crazy if she even thinks I’m getting close to her. Even chained up to a chair she scared me. That’s the amount of evil she was giving off. Her whole vibe screamed danger.

“Yeah that’s not going to happen.” I took a step back.

“Relax Isabel she’s chained up, it’ll be much easier than with the other two.” He placed a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t forget you have my powers.”

“What other two?” “You gave her your powers?” Draco and Hades asked at the same time.

“Don’t tell me you’re suddenly afraid of me? Imagine how I felt the night you burned me alive.” Her words were like venom eating away at my soul. Even though I couldn’t remember the accident, I could only imagine the amount of pain I put her through. She has every right to hate me.

Thanatos gave me an encouraging push forward. Although it seemed more like he was handing me over to the enemy. I took a deep breath as I walked closer to her. Relax Isabel she can’t hurt you, if she could get out of those chains she would’ve escaped a long time ago, right? I placed a shaky hand on her shoulder.

“Enjoy the show.” She smirked at me, and just like that I was pulled into her memories.

Flashback

“You can sleep with me tonight little sis. I’ll take care of you, we’ll fight that cold together.” I watched as she smiled at my younger self.

“You promise?” The younger me asked. It was surreal to see someone that looked just like me when I was younger but have no memory of it.

She held out a pinky smiling at the younger me. “Pinky promise.” I smiled back lacing my pinky with hers.

The scene shifted to us both laying in bed. She was sleep while I laid awake tossing and turning. I could see from here that I was sweating a lot. “Jasmine!” I screamed waking her up.

“What’s wrong? Oh my gosh you’re burning up.” She reached over to the night table to grab a glass of water, when she turned back I was floating. Not just floating, my eyes were purple, and my hair was flaming orange. I saw the moment when she prepared to scream, only to burst into flames. My eyes widened as she fell from the bed screaming. The younger me finally stopped floating and looked terrified. I watched as she ran from the room. I was now just watching my sister be burned alive. She fell to the floor rolling but nothing could save her, and then someone did. My heart stopped when I noticed the black robe and scythe. Thanatos.

“My my my what a mess we have here.” He leaned down to peer at my sister. Who was now laying still no longer on fire but burnt to a crisp. I couldn’t get a good look at his face, but I’d know his voice from anywhere.

Surprisingly my sister, who I just noticed was still breathing, spoke. “P-please I-I don’t w-want t-to die.” I could see tears flowing down her burnt face.

“Well, from the look of things it seems like you do.” He stepped back putting a hand to his chin. I thought he was going to turn around and leave her like that, but to my shock he bent down and kissed her. I watched in slow motion as the longer he kissed her the more she started to heal. Once she was completely healed he leaned back as she sat up. “Hmm, prettier than I thought.”

She looked up at him as tears fell. “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me just yet, you can’t stay here.” He waved his hands and she changed into a robe just like his.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“Did you forget the whole being burnt alive thing that just happened?” He rolled his eyes.

“But you saved me.” She hiccupped.

“There was also screaming and the little witness that ran form the room.” As if to prove his point we could hear footsteps rushing towards the room. Thanatos reached down and grabbed her, pulling her up. “Scream and I’ll kill you.” He hissed in her ear. She whimpered. He waved his scythe just as the door opened. I watched as my mom screamed seeing the burnt body on the floor, completely ignoring the figures standing in the corner. Then I realized she couldn’t see them. I didn’t understand how the body got there, neither did my sister. “Time to go.” I got one last look at my family as Thanatos dragged me away.

Flashback over

I gasped as I hit the floor. Jasmine was still smirking at me. I looked back at Thanatos who was avoiding eye contact with me. “You saved her. You knew she was my sister this whole time.”

“Oooh but that’s not the best part,” I turned to Jasmine as she spoke. “He also fell in love with me.”
