I loved my twin sister, I honestly do, but I refuse to take her shit just because she got into the popular crew. At first, I was hurt. How come I didn’t get in too? I mean we were twins; exact replicas! I didn’t see how not being able to speak Barbie and think about shopping 24/7 made me not fit to be with them. Not to mention that my sister was slowly becoming their leader, and instead of tossing a few good words my way, she now goes out of her way to make me look bad. Honestly not everyone had a problem with me. Lily and Anna were actually nice to me until Andrea put her foot down. Even though I wanted to be extremely hurt because I thought we were becoming great friends; I could almost understand, going against Andrea meant war. Plus the guys and I get along pretty well. I’m like this cross-breed of tomboy and girly-girl. I don’t mind being one of the guys sometimes, but I also won’t hesitate to remind you that I am a girl. Although I’m pretty positive, it’s hard to forget. I have black hair, light blue eyes, sharp cheekbones and plump lips. When we were younger, I always thought Andrea was prettier than me. One day at one of our family cookouts I complained to a close aunt of mine.
“Auntie Tave! Why can’t I look more like Andrea?!” At five, I was a bit dramatic and slightly hysterical.
Aunt Octavia laughed, “Love, you are twins; you do look alike.”
“But the boys always tell Andrea that she’s pretty! Lonnie gave her a flower! When the turd looked at me, he got all red and ran away!”
Auntie Tave giggled “Did you just call him a turd?”
I nodded my head and continued to pout. “Uncle Daren calls the big boys turds when they come by on their skateboards.”
Auntie Tave giggled again and ruffled my hair. “Babe, one day, you’ll come to appreciate your features. Your strong, defined cheekbones make you look exotic.”
I tilted my head not exactly sure what she meant.
“Once you get older you’ll understand what I mean, especially once you lose all this baby fat, but until then....”
“IM GONNA NOM ON YOU!”
I was scooped up into my aunt’s warm embrace as she tickled and blew raspberries at me relentlessly
“Auntie Tave!” I managed to yell in a fit of giggles.
Now I was getting ready to start my junior year, and I was finally able to see my beauty. At least enough to get the courage to confess to Kyle Prewitt. The only problem was, I could barely get the attention of my twin sister, how was I supposed to capture my crush’s attention? There was a week until school started. That meant I had a week to get a brand new wardrobe that would turn heads, specifically the head of Kyle Prewitt. Even though I’ve known both Kyle and his brother Kellan since we were four, I didn’t develop a crush on Kyle until freshman year. I guess the most frustrating part is that he’s seemed to have completely forgotten who I was and hangs out with the same clique as my sister. I honestly don’t even know why I still have a crush on him, to be honest.
My phone vibrated informing me that I had a message from Sarah, my best friend. She knew I was head over heels for Kyle and was determined to help me get him. I was more than grateful for her support. Honestly, if it weren’t for her encouraging me, I probably would have given up a long time ago. Just thinking about it put a smile on my face. I snapped out of my thoughts when I realized Sarah was currently waiting for me downstairs. I grabbed my jean jacket and my house keys before making my way out to the car.
“Hey, babe!” Sarah greeted me as I slid into the car.
“Hey! What store are we hitting up today?” I asked, buckling up.
“Stores.” Sarah corrected
I groaned I know I agreed to this, but really? It was no secret that I wasn’t the biggest fan of shopping, but I also didn’t want to look like a bum in front of Kyle. Sarah narrowed her eyes at me.
“You said you wanted help, so I’m giving you help. You better not complain!”
I slid down into my seat and sighed, “Fine.”
She was right. I did ask for her help, so I guess I didn’t have any right to complain. Sarah wasted no time when we arrived at the mall. After stopping at Hot Topic, Forever 21, Victoria Secret, and a couple of other stores, I was exhausted.
“Please! Can’t we take a break and eat?” I said, pointing towards the food court.
Sarah sighed, “Fine.”
I rejoiced and practically skipped to the food court. I bee-lined for the California Pizza Kitchen.
“So, how exactly am I going to go about getting Kyle’s attention?” I asked after carefully chewing my pizza.
Sarah snorted. “You’re freaking beautiful, Adri, you don’t have to do anything. All you need is confidence. Stop being the quiet twin. Speak up and don’t back down.”
A smile graced my face as I listened to Sarah talk. I was genuinely grateful for her presence in my life.
“Have I mentioned how much I love you?”
“Not nearly enough, but I’m willing to sit here and listen to how to how much you do.”
“Hey now, don’t make me take it back. ”
Sarah threw a french fry at me, and we both laughed.
A week was over in a flash, and I was a nervous mess. What if I only made a fool of myself? I shook my head from my thoughts. I made my decision, and I was going to stick to it. I chose a black crop top, light blue high waisted jeans, and light blue heels to match. I didn’t think I would get used to heels in such a short amount of time, but I was walking in them like a natural now. I sighed now it was time for makeup. This would be a tad bit more difficult. I decided to go with a neutral smoky eyeshadow and a light layer of eyeliner and mascara. The finishing touch was a pink lipgloss that I took from Sarah some time ago. I stepped back to take a look at myself in the mirror and smiled. For the first time in a while, I truly felt beautiful.
Now I just had to make it downstairs without face planting. After I gently maneuvered my way downstairs, I walked into the kitchen and threw a hot pocket in the microwave. I looked at the time on my phone: 7:01. Sarah would be here in ten minutes to pick me up. I poured myself a glass of orange juice just as the microwave dinged. I finished my makeshift breakfast and reapplied my lipgloss. I was starting to get anxious and didn’t know what to do with myself. What was taking Sarah so long? Before I could freak out any more than I already was, I heard two honks. I sighed in relief. Sarah took a nice, long look at me and whistled.
“You look hot, babe.”
I smiled. “You don’t look too bad yourself.”
Sarah took another look at my face. “You were freaking out, weren’t you?”
I smiled sheepishly and nodded. I couldn’t help it.
“Relax, hun. You’ll do fine. Just be yourself.”
I took a deep breath and repeat after her, “Just be yourself.”
“Do you have our schedules?” Sarah asked
I nodded, “Yeah.”
I dug around in my bag and pulled out both of our schedules.
Sarah took a moment to examine them before she smiled.
“There are only three classes that we don’t have together.”
As soon as we entered the building, the whispering started. Is she new? Isn’t that Andrea? She’s hot! I was beginning to get excited. This was going to be fun.
Nick, one of the idiots that follows my sister around, approached me.
“Hey, Andrea. You look breathtaking today.”
“I’m not Andrea, but thanks, I guess.”
Nick’s eyes widened, “Adriana! No way!”
Well damn. I know I made a few changes, but was it really that shocking? I mean, Andrea and I were almost exact replicas aside from a few differences..
“Uh... yes, way! Now could you get out of my way?”
“Fucking moron,” I muttered under my breathe.
I glanced back at Sarah, who watched the whole encounter with a smirk on her face. I huffed. I guess she was enjoying the results thus far.
Throughout the day, I got mistaken for Andrea and had to explain that I was her twin. Everyone’s puzzled faces were more than amusing. The whisper throughout the hall changed abruptly. Have you seen Adrianna? She looks better than Andrea! Aren’t they twins? She looks great! If I would have known, she looked like that......
On the walk to lunch, Sarah nudged me.
“How does it feel to be the center of attention?”
I smirked, “Pretty damn good.”
I grabbed a tray of chicken fingers and some fruit.
“Where do you want to sit?” I asked
“In the middle.”
My eyes widened, “Are you crazy! That’s where my sister sits! It’s her table!”
Sarah snorted, “Please, is her name carved into the table?”
I narrowed my eyes at her, “No.”
“Did she buy the table?”
“Uggh! I get it! You do realize what you’ll be starting though, right?”
Sarah laughed. “Of course I do. War.”
A grin sneaked it’s way to my face. As much as I was dreading having any type of confrontation with my sister, I couldn’t help but get a bit excited. Everyone stared at us in shock as we made our way to the table. No one had ever dared to sit at Andrea’s table. She was going to be pissed. Our friends Logan, Conner, and Tristan approached the table.
Conner whistled. “Looking good, Adri.”
“You knew it was me?”
Tristan rolled his eyes.
“We’ve known you since we were kids. I’m pretty sure we can tell the difference between you and the bitch.”
Logan nodded “I’m actually kind of offended.”
I gave a low chuckle, “Sorry, sorry.”
Sarah opened her mouth to say something but was instantly cut off as people started crowding around our table.
“Oh my god, you look so pretty, Adriana.”
“We should totally go shopping.”
“We should hang out this weekend.”
“How about a date?”
“Can I have your number?”
Sarah’s eyes sparkled, “You’re a hit!”
I laughed. My eyes suddenly locked on a figure coming our way. Kyle. Everyone made room for him as he continued to make his way toward us. My breath faltered when his gaze locked on me. He had bleach blonde hair and the prettiest blue eyes. Don’t even get me started on his body.
“You’re Andrea’s sister, Adriana, right?” He asked flashing a friendly smile
I figured I better amp up my confidence to go with my new look. I leaned forward and rested my chin on my hands.
“That’s me. And you are?”
Kyle’s eyes sparkled. He knew I was bullshitting him. Everyone knew who he was.
“Kyle. Kyle Prewitt. I can’t believe your sister never introduced us before.”
I shrugged slightly annoyed that he still didn’t remember who I was. “My sister was never one for sharing. Especially the spotlight.”
Kyle chuckled. “I can see that.”
A smaller figure was pushing its way through the crowd — my sister. I put on the most charming smile I could muster.
“Did you need something, Andy?”
“Don’t call me that!” Andrea seethed.
I raised my eyebrows, “Is there something wrong?”
“You. You’re sitting at our table.” She stated, wrapping her arm around Kyle’s. She knew how much I liked him! I made sure to keep a poker face. There was no way I was going to let her see how much it bothered me.
Kyle laughed. He didn’t move his arm out of her grasp, but he didn’t exactly welcome it either.
“It’s not like we reserved the table. Let them sit there.”
Andrea looked like she was ready to argue, but thought better of it. Probably didn’t want to taint her image. Andrea forced a laugh.
“You’re right. Adriana I’d like to talk to you when we get home.”
“Sure thing sis.”
As they left the crowd dispersed.
Sarah scoffed “Kyle just started paying her attention and now she’s acting like she already owns him. You did a good job though, hun”
“Are you kidding me? I thought my heart was going to stop!”
They laughed, and I pouted. In what world was my heart stopping funny?
It was the end of the day, and I was dreading going home. I wasn’t really in the mood to hear Andrea’s mouth. I sighed as I reached the front door of our house. I knew she would be standing in the Living room waiting for me. I opened the door, and there she was arms crossed, and nostrils flared. The yelling would commence in 3...... 2..... 1.
“ADRIANA! WHAT THE HELL?!”
And there it is. I sighed and trudged past her into the kitchen. She angrily stomped behind me, eyes narrowed as if she was waiting for an apology or explanation. I raised an eyebrow and grabbed a yogurt out of the fridge. I snatched a spoon from the drawer and trudged past her and to my room. I kicked the door shut before plopping onto my bed. I faintly heard Andrea’s frustrated scream before she stomped her way up the stairs and in front of my bedroom door. If I listened hard enough I could hear her heavy breathing. Oooh, she must be livid. I shrugged before stuffing a spoonful of yogurt into my mouth.
Andrea yanked the door open and stormed into my room.
“Explain yourself!” She demands
I tilt my head in confusion.
“What are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb! You came to school today intending to look pretty or something. Why?”
Seriously? I blink several times unsure of what to make of the situation.
“Is there a law saying that I can’t change up my style when I want to?”
Andrea narrowed her eyes, “Just know that you’ll never be as pretty as me. No one can steal my spotlight.”
For a moment, I was genuinely hurt. I had always felt inferior to Andrea, and I was only just recently starting to overcome it. I placed a smirk on my face and took another spoonful of yogurt.
“You do realize we have the exact same face, right?”
Andrea let out a frustrated shriek and stormed out of my room and out of the house. I sighed and slid down into my pillows. I’m glad that was over with, but this was only the beginning. Andrea wasn’t going to let this go. After finishing my yogurt and homework, I decided to get some sleep. I had a feeling tomorrow was going to be a long day.
The next day started pretty smoothly. I got dressed in a white pleated tank top and a pink miniskirt. I ate breakfast, did my makeup, went to school, got through half of my classes, and there was still no sign of retaliation from Andrea. The whole day was peaceful. Around lunch, I decided to drop my guard and stop being so paranoid. We were all gathered around the lunch table having a normal conversation, or at least as normal as it gets for us anyway. I was just about to tease Logan when a throat cleared. I looked up to see Kyle staring down at me.
“Would you mind if I sat here?” He said making eye contact with me before glancing at the rest of the table.
“No, not at all,” Sarah said, nudging me.
I nodded, not able to find my voice. He was so beautiful. I glanced out of the corner of my eye as he made conversation with the boys. The boys remained friendly but looked slightly uncomfortable. Sarah kept nudging me and teasing me under her breath while I tried not to hyperventilate.
“Adriana,” Kyle called out to me
Oh, my God, his voice is just..DAMN. Can he not be hot? I took a deep breath and placed the most charming smile I could muster on my face before turning around to face him.
“I was wondering if you wanted to hang out later after school?”
“I’d love to, but I would have to make sure my mom doesn’t have anything planned.”
Kyle nodded. “Andrea told me about her spontaneous bonding trips.”
I nodded and laughed. Our mother always picks the most random times to hang out with us, but honestly, it was a blessing she even tried. Some parents didn’t even do that much. Although I had a sneaking suspicion that she only planned these trips to cover for her being a total bitch.
“Once I make sure everything is clear; I’ll get back to you after school.”
“Great! I hope things work out. I want to spend time with you.”
I blushed deeply but kept eye contact with, or at least I tried to. My crush wanted to spend time with me. This was honestly one of the best moment of my life and although I love my mom deeply I was praying that she wouldn’t want to hang out today. The bell rung signaling that I only had three classes left. By the time ninth period came I was bouncing with excitement. I had shot my mom a text asking if she had any plans for later on today and she said she would be working late at the office. So not only did that mean I could go hang out with Kyle, but it also meant that dad would be cooking dinner and if dad was cooking dinner, then we were having lasagna with five different cheeses. Five! Today turned out to be pretty awesome.
As soon as the bell rung, I raced out of the classroom and put all of my stuff in my locker. I think Kyle’s locker was near the Senior parking lot. I almost ran there before I realized I would probably look stupid. When I saw him, I called out him. He looked up from his locker and glanced at me before returning to his locker. Did he not realize who I was? Did he think I was trying to blow him off earlier? I stopped in front of his locker and tapped him on the shoulder. He glanced at me again and rolled his eyes.
“What do you want?”
I blanched. Why were his actions so different from earlier? I didn’t think I did anything to make him this annoyed with me.
“I thought we would hang out today?”
I tilted my head in confusion and bit my lip. Had he forgotten?
“Look, Andrea, I told you no already.”
That explains it. He thought I was Andrea. I looked down hurt. I thought he could tell the difference.
“Shit. You’re not Andrea, are you?”
I shook my head still looking down.
“I’m so sorry Adriana! You guys look so much alike and I still have a bit of trouble telling you guys apart. I’m sorry I snapped on you like that.”
I nodded and looked across the hall.
He sighed and turned my head towards him so that I was looking at him.
“Do you still want to hang out?” He asked, shooting me a small smile.
It was kind of hard to say no to that smile, but I was still hurt, so I didn’t answer right away.
I finally broke out into a smile and nodded.
“Yeah, I still want to hang out.”
Kyle drove us to his house, and a few of his friends were already there watching tv. I noticed a couple of faces, like Lily and Anna.
“How did they get into your house?” I whispered to Kyle
Kyle laughed “My brother let them in.”
I vaguely remembered Kellan. If my memory was correct, then he was just as attractive as his brother. I think they grew part like Andrea and I did. You hardly ever saw the two together. There were a couple of rumors that he was a delinquent whether they were true or not I wouldn’t know.
Everyone greeted me and we all dispersed into our own little conversations before Kyle suggested we go down to the basement. It was a cute little set up with an L shaped sofa, two love seats, and a plasma tv. Kyle sat next to me in one of the love seats and put his arm around me. Kyle was talking to the boys about some soccer game and I was starting to feel uncomfortable. I felt out of place. A girl I haven’t met before came and started a conversation with me. I smiled at her gratefully. I found out that her name was Madison. It turned out that we actually had quite a few things in common. I excused myself to go get some water, but Kyle grabbed my hand and gave me a questioning glance. I leaned forward.
“Getting a drink of water,” I whispered.
Kyle smiled and nodded before releasing my hand. I was so proud of myself for not freaking out at the skin-to-skin contact. I made my way to the kitchen and searched the fridge for a bottle of water. I thought all hope was lost until I saw a bottle in the very back of the fridge. I stretched my arm out to grab it, but I couldn’t quite get my hand on it. I leaned in and stretched as far as I could. Curse my short arms!
“Did you lose something?”
A deep voice sounded behind me, causing me to jump and slam my head into the fridge. I heard them chuckle and pouted. Why do people like laughing at my misfortune? I turned, and as soon as my eyes locked on him, I knew who he was. Kellan. He seriously was just as gorgeous as his brother. His hair was a shade darker than Kyle’s, and instead of green, he had intense blue eyes. He looked slightly more built than Kyle. When I was done checking him out, I blushed deeply. I probably look ridiculous with half my body in the fridge and my ass sticking the air.
I cleared my throat, “I was trying to get the bottle of water.”
He raised an eyebrow, his eyes glittering with amusement.
“Do you need some help?”
It was at that moment that I had finally grasped the top of the bottle. I snatched it out before I could lose my grasp on it. I stood up slowly and smoothed out my skirt.
“Sorry. That was..... awkward.”
Kellan chuckled again and shrugged.
“You call it awkward; I call it cute and amusing.”
I blushed again.
“I don’t know if you remember me-”
“I remember who you are Adriana.”
I was astonished people usually automatically said Andrea, or they give up and say ‘You’re one of the Levant twins, right?’
“Why do you looked so shocked?”
“People usually have a hard time telling my sister and me apart.”
“Really? But you guys are so different from each other.”
I beamed at him “I don’t want to make this weird, but you kind of just made me happy.”
Kellan flashed me a smile, “Having a twin seems like it would be hard.”
“You have no idea. Especially when you have a twin like mine.”
We both chuckled. Kellan looked like he was about to say something when Kyle interrupted him.
“Adriana! You took a while, so I came to check on you. You okay?”
“Yup. Might have embarrassed myself though.”
Kellan chuckled “See you around Adri.”
And then he was gone. “I didn’t know you and my brother talked.”
I shrugged, “It’s been a while since we’ve talked actually.”
“Really? You guys seemed pretty close to me.”
I glanced at him oddly. Why was he acting so weird? Kyle interrupted my thought and dragged me back to the love seat with him. The rest of the night was surprisingly fun, and I was almost sad when Kyle took me home. From that day on, we would pick days out to hang out sometimes with his friends, sometimes with mine. I always looked forward to the time we spent at his house. Occasionally he would send everyone home early, and we would just sit there and talk. I also looked forward to the short conversations I had with Kellan. Although our conversations were short, we have gotten a bit closer.
One day Sarah and I were walking down the hall when she stopped me.
“What’s going on?”
“What do you mean?”
Sarah rolled her eyes, “You and Kyle hang out at least once a week. Why aren’t you guys going out yet?”
“He hasn’t asked me.” I shrugged
Sarah facepalmed, “He doesn’t have to! Confess to him, and then you can take the lead and ask him out!”
“I don’t know.”
I knew she was right, but I so used to people preferring my sister over me that I was scared. I took a deep breath. Sarah was right. Well, it looks like I’ll be confessing to Kyle. Shit. I hope I don’t fuck this up.
