Chapter 6

I followed him inside the restaurant. The lighting here was darker than the morgue and I followed closely behind him so I didn’t accidentally knock over something.

“This is your booth here.” the waiter showed us the a far table, where a woman was already waiting. She looked up, her perfectly curled hair framing her face.

“Michael!” she smiled standing up, her body reaching her full height which was nearly as tall as Michael. “It’s so nice to finally meet you.” She stepped out of the booth and gave Michael a very tight hug.

“Likewise.” he said.

“Please, be seated.” She waved towards the chairs as she got in. Michael scooted in and then looked up at me “Oh.” and then he moved in more so I could squish in next to him. He shivered as my cold air would have brushed him, that was the downside of being invisible he could feel me there but no one else could.

“Move in a bit more.”

“No. I don’t want to sit closer to her.”He whispered.

“Sorry what did you say?” she leaned over

“Bluetooth sorry. Just ending the call now.” Michael said giving me a pointed look. I rolled my eyes. “Ask her for her name.”

“Oh yeah, um, sorry what was your name again.”

“Heidi. I take it your mum didn’t give you a full run down like mine did.” she giggled tossing her curls over her shoulder, exposing the skin under the tight green dress that was barely held up by spaghetti straps.

“No she didn’t I only just found out about it so I apologise for being late.” Michael ran a hand through his brownlocks again, his right leg bumping up and down.

“What a gentleman.” I nodded smiling.

Heidi reached for the menu the same time Michael did, their fingers brushing, “Aw cute.” I said.

Michael just frowned letting her take the menu and leaned back, “Go for it.” he said as she apologised and tried to give the menu back.

I looked around at the other tables, there was delicious looking food everywhere. The table next to us were having what looked like a slab of meat and vegetables, covered in potatoes.

“I’m so hungry now.” I said. Michael looked over at me, “I won’t eat obviously.” I said quickly.

“Um Michael?” Heidi asked, “Did you want to order?”

There was an awkward silence again between them as they just looked at each other, “Ask her something.” I said.

“So uh Heidi, what do you like doing in your free time?” Michael asked reaching for his glass of water.

“Um I don’t know what do you mean.”

“When you’re not at work.”

“Oh,” she covered her mouth as she giggled, tossing those curls once again over her shoulder, “I’m alway busy. I like to hang out with friends and go to brunches and dinners.I’ve very social. What about you?”

“Oh definitley not the social type.” Michael said slouching slightly in his seat sighing, I watched him look at his phone on his leg.

“Give her your attention!” I scolded him. Michael gritted his teeth but looked up, “I sometimes watch movies.”He said.

Heidi nodded, “What do you do, for a job?”

“I’m a Federal Detective,”

“So is that like the police.”

“Similar.” He responded.

“That’s amazing! I’ve alway wanted to date a man in a uniform.” and there it was, that giggle again. She has to stop giggling for everything I couldn’t take her seriously. The food arrived and I looked at their plate, a heavenly smell.

Michael looked at me, raising an eyebrow. I shook my head, I couldn’t. I couldn’t even taste a drop of that heavily risotto.

He reached for his phone writing something in a text message and placing it on the table in front of me.

I’ll get you food on the way back

I smiled, he was a sweetheart. I watched as they both started eating, making small talk which was very small indeed, filled with lots of silent moments. This was almost as awkward as my carriage date with Henderson.

“Did you uh, want dessert?” Heidi asked.

Michael shook his head, “I have to get back to work I have a lot of things to do. Nice meeting you though.” They both awkwardly stood up and I hurried out of the booth to let them out. They did another awkward hug goodbye.

“That was bad.” I commented as we walked towards the car. “Why did you have to go on this date?”

“My mum is having a big birthday and she wanted me to have a girlfriend so she could stop answering all these questions. So she’s been relentlessly trying to match me up with people and end me on all these dates for the past year. I don’t get it. Why can’t I just be single.”

I shrugged, “Maybe she just wanted grand children or something. So what are you going to do with this birthday then. Do you want to wish it get cancelled or a big storm blows everyone away?” I suggested. I just needed him to get through his wishes quickly, I needed to be released.

“No.” Michael started the engine, “My mum’sbeen looking forward for this birthday for ages so I don’t want to ruin it for her. I just need a fake girlfriend or something.”

“Hmm, is that your wish?”

Michael looked at me, “You can do that.”

I nodded, “Yeah I can cast a spell on someone or something.”

Michael hesitated, “Nah.” he turned back towards the steering wheel, “I don’t think thats a good wish, I’ll think of something.”

“Well see how you feel. If I’m still around I can always just be visible for the day and come on over.”

I nodded, “Yeah if I’m here, and then after those two remaining wishes I can just disappear so there would be no holding you back anyway. I would be the perfect fake girlfriend because once I disappear I would be super hard to be found.

“Maybe then. If you’re willing to be my fake girlfriend.”

“Just need to get cleansed first remember.” I reminded him.

“We’re on our way now don’t worry. Cameron should still be there.”

* *

“Just because I’ve cleansed you, doesn’t mean you can just roam around free, please be careful.”

I nodded hopping out of the chair, there was smoke everywhere in the room, mixed smells that were making my nose hurt. Cameron was basically hiding my aura from other being that would try to find me. With all these various smells mixed in with me, other special being would find it hard to track me.

Of course I smelled no different to humans or even myself, it was just the aura that could be sensed.

“How are you fitting in?” Cameron asked brushing my hair back. I shrugged.

“It’s alright. Michael is nice but he really needs to come up with two wishes quickly. If I thought Jennifer was slow on her wishes when she was a hundred, Michael is slower. He doesn’t know what he wants.”

Cameron frowned as he started packing everything up, “Be careful with that boy. I don’t like him.”

“Is that because he thinks you have something to do with the murder.”

“No it’s just I don’t know. I don’t like him. How are the murders going by the way. Do you uh-know anything more?”

I shrugged “Not really. It appears both humans and some of our kind was killed.”

“Our kind?” Cameron said surprised. I nodded as I shrugged my jacket back on.

“Yeah, some of their powers seemed to be have stripped and their skin was in awful condition Camie. You should have seen them, it was like they sucked it out of them.”

“You don’t think it’s him do you?”

I shrugged, “I don’t know. I asked Michael to do some digging for me to find out more information about those dead to see if I can see who and where they came from.”

I opened the door stepping out, Michael standing up once he saw me. “You look the same.” He commented.

“Obviously. What did you expect?” I asked him.

“Just be careful. You know he’s getting stronger day by day.” Cameron warned me handing a bag of extra products to put on my skin in case I couldn’t get cleansed next time. These should last me a few years, even though they were not as good as the actual process itself that I had just gotten done.

“I know, I’ll see you soon!” I waved a goodbye.

“Who is stronger?” Michael asked once we left the shop. I shook my head, “It’s better if you don’t now about that. So,” I asked turning to look at him, “Are you going got get that food you promised me?”

Michael chuckled, a pretty sound filling up the night sky. “Yes, of course. What does her highness request?”
