I heard the door slam and I knew James was home. I sipped my beer and stared at the TV. He stood in the doorway and glared at me. He threw his keys down on the table and sat opposite me on the sofa. I met his eyes and shrugged at him.
"What?" I demanded.
He stared at me, his jaw clenching as he clearly fought with himself about what to say to me.
I rolled my eyes at him and looked back at the TV.
"What the fuck was that? This morning?"
He spoke quietly, his voice full of anger. I met his eyes with mine, the same steely gaze staring back at me.
"Look, it's just how we are. I told you, she is mine. She will always come back to me. You were fucking stupid to think otherwise."
I watched as his hands shook with anger.
"I don't believe you." He snarled. "She wouldn't just fucking do that."
I smiled at him then and finished my beer.
"Well, she did. She was drunk. She was at a party and I saw her there. She needed me, she was in a bit of a state. Luckily it was me that found her."
I was getting tired of having to explain myself to him. Who had been with her for seven years? I found myself feeling irritated.
"Yeah, lucky her. Rather you found her than some guy who would take advantage of her." his voice was dripping in sarcasm, his blue eyes dark with anger.
I looked at him in annoyance.
"Listen, little brother. I didn't take advantage of anyone. I don't need to. Look, it's up to Kate what she does. Or who."
I smiled to myself then as he held his head in his hands.
"I know you fucking hate me Adam." I gave him a nod, confirming he was right. "But don't fuck her head up to hurt me."
He got up then, his voice filled with sadness. As he walked out I said,
"She fucked up by herself, she didn't need any help from me. My advice? Lucky escape James. Now leave her alone."
I said the last part with menace, as he shook his head, walking back out.
Oh, mission accomplished.
