#7 "Full on Studying"

(Sean’s POV)

Well when I came back to the library after lunch, the girl was gone. Instead, some man with a beer belly was sitting opposite of us. I soon forgot all about her and spent the rest of the year trying to cram everything in my head. Yup, I was full-on studying.

I naturally spent a lot of time with my grandma, too. She showed me pictures of mom when she was younger, told me weird things she did, and I liked spending time with her. I missed my mom. It has been 4 years since she passed away, and in my house back in the states, there weren’t much to remember her by. Dad never wanted to talk about her and all her things were gone from the house. Like she never existed. But here, I finally had someone to talk about her. To share memories. To share our grief. It was 4 years too late, but it was taking a positive effect on me. My heart felt...lighter. Like a huge stone has been gotten rid of.

"Hey. Did you contact your father recently?" My uncle asked, opening my bedroom door.

I just shook my head no. The whole family knew that I spoke Korean fluently now. I have to admit. It was a secret that was bound to come out sooner or later.

"You should really call him. He asked me about you.” My uncle said, shaking his head.

"I will." I replied as my uncle left with a smile. The truth was that I wasn’t going to. If my dad wanted to know how I was doing, he should contact me. Not my uncle. And being stubborn, I wasn’t going to call him first. It was going to be him to apologize, it was going to be him to call me first.

I soon logged into facebook and looked at the things my friends have posted. They seemed to be having an epic year. God, I still couldn’t believe that I was missing out on it all. All those pranks I could have done...I sighed. I had been jotting down ideas in my notebook, and when Jihoon saw it, he shook his head violently, telling me that this was a huge no. Even a trivial food fight was a big no. I pouted as I threw the page out. Damn. I was going to go crazy with all this studying and not playing. I mean you can’t just give yourself whips every time! You needed Carrots too!

Just then, Jihoon came into my room without knocking.

“Uh...Why are you looking at me like I’m sort of a mosquito that you wanna kill?” Jihoon said, taking a step back.

“How can you live like this? Studying like you are going into a battle or something. Every fucking day! I’m going nuts! Korean isn’t even Korean! I have been staring at this mother effing thing for the past hour and I still can’t understand a thing about it! Why did the medieval people use this type of language to write? It makes no sense at all! It’s all a conspiracy. You guys are aliens. That must be it. Oh god. I knew it. I have thought about this for months! I’m going mad!!!!” I said, grasping my hair as I flopped down on my bed.

“Woah. Take it easy there. How are you going to spend your last year in high school here when you are already freaking out? The stress level gets higher you know? All the tension in school, the teachers giving you looks...” Jihoon said casually as he dumped his backpack on the floor.

“You are supposed to cheer me up, not make me rip my hair out more.” I said, glaring at him.

“Hey, If I tried to comfort you, you would have just gone on and on about some weird conspiracy thing you clearly have it going on. We’re not aliens, okay? If it’s that hard to understand, why don’t you just listen to some online classes? It’s free.” Jihoon said, yawning.

“Huh. Why didn’t you tell me that earlier?” I said, smacking him with a pillow.

“Why didn’t you ask, you moron?” Jihoon said, smacking me with a pillow too. Now that turned into a full-on pillow fight.

“Uh...Is this a bad time?”

Both Jihoon’s and my head snapped to my laptop which was on my desk. Josh and Cole were staring at us with their mouths hanging open.

“What the f? I didn’t accept your video call.” I said, raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, clearly. You were too busy with your boy toy.” Cole snickered as Josh whacked him on the back.

“Actually, it was you who called.” Josh said.

“Huh...Must have pressed the button while we were wrestling.” I mused.

“Wait a second...Did he call me your boy toy? What does that mean?” Jihoon asked, frowning.

“Oh, this is priceless. Our boy was gay! No wonder you didn’t have a girlfriend since Alison! Bro, you should have told us sooner!” Cole said, smiling widely.

I just rolled my eyes. “Shut up. You know that I’m not gay. This is my cousin, Jihoon. Cuz, meet the morons. Josh and Cole.”

“Uh..Hi?” Jihoon said awkwardly as he waved at them.

“Hey. Who’s your favorite celebrity?” Cole asked.

“Uh...I dunno. I guess Dwayne Johnson? He’s a cool guy. I like Chris Rock too.” Jihoon said, shrugging.

“Hey, I like this guy.” Josh said, grinning. “We share the same taste. Have you watched ‘Everybody Hates Chris?’”

“Absolutely! Gotta love that show.” Jihoon said, chuckling.

“Okay. Now I officially found my new best friend.” Josh said, wiping a fake tear.

“Wow. Dumping us because that guy has watched your favorite show?” Cole said sarcastically, joking.

“Hey! You guys never watched it even though I half begged you two. It’s effing hilarious!” Josh said, crossing his arms.

“Okay, okay. It was nice seeing you guys and all but I gotta go study...” I said. Josh and Cole stared at me with their mouths open.

“Why are you guys staring at me like that?” I asked, frowning.

“You are going to study.” Josh stated.

“On a weekend.” Cole said, shaking his head.

“Yeah. What’s wrong?” I asked.

“What’s wrong? You never study on the weekends! Since when did you become such a serious student?” Cole asked, laughing.

“Hey, the competition is tough out here. I’m already a huge step behind these kids. My dad would kill me if my test results aren’t good.” I said.

“Well, good luck on that.” Josh said, shaking his head.

“Yeah. Oh and you know what to do when you find cute girls...“Cole said, wriggling his eyebrows.

“You have a girlfriend.” I said again.

“I broke up with her! God, check my facebook status.” Cole said, rolling his eyes.

“To be fair, he only broke up with her an hour earlier...“Josh drawled.

“Okay, okay. I’m going now. Bye.” I said, waving a final goodbye as I ended the call.

“Wow. Your friends are really something.” Jihoon said, shaking his head.

“Yeah..I’ll really introduce them to you one day. You can always come over to the States for a visit.” I shrugged.

“Aww. Really?” Jihoon said, batting his eyelashes.

I made a grunt. “Not when you do that. Come on. Give me the online class link!”
