My day begins with the dreadful alarm clock. I mean who in their right mind would invent such an instrument of torture?!
But I need to wake up because anyway in about five, four, three, two, one.
“Mommy!” and there it is.
“Morning my beautiful baby boy. How did you sleep?” I questioned my three-year-old son AJ.
“Good mama. Air spaceships and dinos!!” He squeaked excitedly about the dreams he had. I couldn’t help but giggle at his cuteness.
After another five minutes of morning cuddles I get up and make breakfast for the both of us and after we both got ready. Him for playgroup and me for my work at the hospital.
I work as a doctor at the hospital in hopes of specialising in heart surgery since I am in my final year of med school I still need to take classes even if I will graduate early because of my good grades. I do hope that I achieve that goal just to prove everyone that said that ‘a single 25-year-old mom can’t do that’ wrong.
I made the mistake to fall in love with a boy that I thought loved me back but in reality, only used me, cheated on me, dumped me and kicked me out leaving me to fend for myself when being pregnant with his child. Soooo yeah. The story of my love life. But in no way do I regret keeping AJ.
He was a true blessing and he has such a character, he really keeps me on my toes and he is just overall a joy to raise even if he has the occasional temper tantrum.
I was also very lucky to have kept in a safe place all the money I made when I was younger as well as my inheritance when my grandparents died because if not I would have been in a worse situation than I am now.
I dropped AJ to his playgroup then I was off to the hospital that wasn’t very far from there. I said good morning to Gladis at the reception and then changed into my scrubs and went to go check on my patients and do the 8 o’clock medecin round.
After my long day at work taking care of my patients, attending two operations and had a group study in the hospital it was finally time for me to pick up my little man, eat then head to class once more.
I got back from the nursery and luckily I’ve got a deal with one of the carers to keep Aj there till 7 pm, that’s when my first shift ends so that I don’t have to pay ludicrous amounts of extra money for a babysitter. I mean, I do pay her more to keep Aj but not as much as I should a babysitter and besides, he isn’t the only kid with parents that have really late hours.
After dinner, I get myself ready for my evening classes and I usually take Aj with me since I don’t have anybody to take care of him that isn’t like at a 2-hour drive from here. My teacher is super nice and lets me take him. He set up a little sofa in the back of the class so that Aj can sleep while I work.
I got our stuff and was out the door with a very sleepy Aj in my arms. We were coming up to late November so it was starting to get a little chilly. Aj was wrapped in his coat and a blanket that I take with me for him. I was in skinny jeans, big hoodie and my coat with a pair of worn out trainers.
I was walking down the usual path to go to the school that I have my lessons in. It was a dark and cold evening and it was a lot more quiet than usual.
I walked passed an alley and there were shots that rung. Aj woke up and I ran to the nearest place that I could hide behind: a dumpster. Not the greatest place because of the smell but it will have to do for the time being.
I waited about ten mins hugging Aj closer to my chest and listening to see if anything else was happening. I could hear in a distance the sound of people fighting and luckily no more bullet sounds.
Once I heard a car drive away I stood up and started walking again at a faster pace. I walked by another alley and this time I heard groans of pain. Me being me, I went to inspect what it was and I found a rather strong looking man laying on the floor in a pool of blood. I put Aj down at a safe distance and told him to look away and call an ambulance. With being a doctor I taught Aj to be able to call for help when it is needed and he is always a great help and listens to me in these sort of situations.
“Sir, can you hear me? ” I knelt down next to him checking his heart rate and to see if it was still breathing. And thank the gods he was.
“Sir? If you can hear me squeeze my hand.” I held his hand and he managed to squeeze only lightly but I left out a breath of relief when he did.
“Ok sir, my name is Emrys and I’m here with my son Aj. Don’t worry I’m a doctor and I’m here to help you.” I took my scarf off and applied pressure to the wound.
I sat there analysing all his littlest features. His eyes were closing and opening every now and then. And what I could catch of his eyes were that they were a deep chocolate brown. His hair was a mess but in the dark, it seemed to be a mix between chestnut and regular deep drown. He had a scar on his right eyebrow and a little bit of a crooked nose.
“Mummy. Ambulance coming.” Aj interrupted me in my daydream and sure enough, the sound of the ambulance could be heard.
I went in the van with Aj and the Man and we drove off to the hospital again. When we arrived they wheeled him out and I ran to the reception and dropped Aj off with Gladis and I left her with my things too, including my coat, bag, jumper etc. She saw the look on my face and nodded I yelled a thank you and ran to where they would have taken him.
“We’re losing him.” Dr Ortega yelled as I approached. I jumped on the gurney and started CPR as we were being rushed down the corridors to a waiting operation room. I ran to the changing room and threw on my scrubs and ran back down the corridor whilst pulling my hair into a ponytail. I washed my hands and got all geared up and get in.
Since I’m a student/ doctor I assist Dr Ortega in his operations, he’s my mentor.
-----2 hours later------
I finally get out of the operation room. The patient is stable and we managed to get the bullets out of his chest. Luckily they didn’t hit any major organs or blood vessels but he did give us several scares on the op table since some bullets were so close to his heart.
I walk up to the reception where I find my son happily drawing on papers on Gladis’ lap while she was making phone calls.
“Hey.” I waved once she finished with her call.
“Mummy!” Aj all but yelled and hopped down her lap to run to me. I picked him up and placed him on my hip.
“How’s my baby been?” I questioned both of them.
“I good mama.” Aj smiled and placed his head in the crook of my neck.
Gladis smiled at us. She was a 60 something-year-old African-American woman with the sweetest smile and she was just great to have around in the hospital.
“He was a true angel. He didn’t fall back asleep but he did stay up and help me by making beautiful drawings for my desk.” We exchanged smiles as the front door opened letting the cold air in.
“Where is he?” A lady in her mid to late-forties followed by four men in suits asked.
“Sorry, ma’am? Who are you looking for?” Gladis was back in her professional mode as I placed my self at the side.
“Damon Mortimer. My son. Please tell me where he is.” She begged and I could see the tears in her eyes.
“Sorry, ma’am. We don’t have anybody of the name here.” Gladis gave a sad smile.
“But please. He must! He was shot and we were told he was brought here.” I turned to the woman.
“I was there. Your son, Damon? Right?” I asked and she nodded with a new found hope in her eyes.
“I was the one to find him. He came out of the op room about 20 Minutes ago. He is stable for the moment. We didn’t know his name when he came and I couldn’t ask him since he was falling in and out of consciousness. I was the one to help operate on him too. ”
I pulled Aj up higher on my hip as the eldest looking man came up to the woman and held her to his side.
“Thank you miss...” he dragged
“Doctor Belle.” I smile and put my hand out for him to shake. I offered my hand to the woman but she just pulled me into a hug.
“Thank you, dear. Can we see him?” I looked and the clock behind the counter : 11:45 pm.
“I’m sorry not for the moment. He needs to rest and not be around any source of stress at the minute. Visiting hours start after 9 am tomorrow. I’m afraid that’s all I can do for the moment.” She smiled sadly and turned further into her husband (I suppose).
“Thank you anyway. I can see you already have your hands full.” She said pointing to Aj.
“Haha yes. Not exactly how I planned my evening but at least I could save someone’s son. I know how it feels to be worried about a child.” We smiled at each other and I walked them to the waiting room.
“You can stay here if you wish to wait for further news. I’ll start my night shift anyway since I’m the one who found him and I will need to do regular check-ups. If you have further questions about what happened I’ll be happy to assist. Dr Ortega operated on Damon but he finished his shift and went back home.” All five of them nodded.
This is not what I had planned at all.
what do you all think for the moment?
are you excited for the rest?
