The electricity running through my body put me in a state of shock. I just stared at Everett with wide eyes, stunned by the fact I have two mates. What could have been an eternity or merely a couple of seconds of our hands touching, Chris placed his hand on my forearm. I immediately froze, and glanced down at his hand on my arm and released Everett’s hand quickly.
“Come beautiful, it’s almost time to start the ceremony.” Chris stated as he pulled my chair back out for me to take a seat. As I sat down I kept my gaze out towards the crowd, all the while I felt a certain green gaze piercing through me. He has to feel this to.
I took a few deep breaths as Alpha Richard began speaking to his pack, demanding attention and asking everyone to take their seats. As soon as I thought I had calmed my nerves by breathing, the chair beside me was pulled out.
My heart began to race once again, it felt like it was going to thump out of my chest. I squeezed my eyes shut and hoped this was all just in my imagination and he wasn’t sitting beside me. I opened my eyes as I turned to the person now on the right side of me. He was even more handsome up close and it made my breath catch.
He gave me a sad smile, probably just as confused as I am, and turned his attention back to the Alpha who was still speaking. Maybe I should be paying attention, but I’m to busy drowning out everything around me because I am literally surrounded by mates. One on the left and one on the right. I mentally squeal in delight, even if one of them is the Devil, himself.
One thing is for sure, I do not want to spend my life with Chris. If he is capable of keeping me locked in a cage, what else is he capable of? What’s next? Is he going to put me in silver chains and watch me wallow in agony all day. Wouldn’t say it’s beneath him.
After Richard finished saying whatever it was he was saying, waiters were roaming around serving dinner and filling champagne flutes. The waiter sat my plate in front of me and I could hear my stomach growl as though I haven’t eaten in weeks. The steak and roasted potatoes looked divine, with no mystery meat in sight. I lifted my fork and my knife and was about to start on my meal when a voice resonated in my head, “don’t eat the food.”
I immediately sat my utensils down and they clattered against the plate. Although, I doubted Chris would give me a dose of wolfsbane in front of everyone, i still couldn’t be too careful. Chris gave me a concerned look and said, “what’s wrong, Amelia?”
“Sorry, just not feeling well. Must be the nerves.” I said as I have him an apologetic smile to which he just shrugged and continued on with his meal. After a few minutes of staring blankly at my plate. I timidly asked, “May I go to the washroom, Chris?” He whipped his head toward me and looked in my eyes and I saw a flash of annoyance before he blinked and it was gone.
“Of course, let me get you an escort.” He said as he looked over my shoulder to signal to an Omega to come and babysit me while I go to the bathroom. From my right, I heard a chair scoot out and a throat being cleared. “I can take her, Chris, if you would like? I need to stretch my legs, can’t sit for long.”
Chris looked up to meet Everett’s gaze and then looked back at me with a smile on his face and promise in his eyes. Only I knew what that promise was. Try anything and Charlie suffers. I gave him a quick nod so that he knew I understood his threat.
Chris looked back at Everett and winked as he said, “Sure, take good care of my girl.”
Everett let out a full laugh that almost made me forget about my current situation, and my heart began to race. Hearing that made me realize, I’ve never heard a sweeter sound. I closed my eyes savoring the noise and committing it to memory. All too soon, an electric hand was placed on my shoulder, beckoning me without words to stand.
I stood quickly and turned to face Everett, who had his elbow bent out to the side silently asking me to link my arm with his. I grabbed hold with more force than necessary, and I think it stunned him a bit. He recovered well and we began walking, making our way down the stairs, weaving through the tables, and out of the dining room doors.
I sighed with relief as soon as we walked out and I felt the young Alpha’s beautiful eyes on me. We made our way down the hall, as I peeked in room after room looking for the nearest bathroom. Finally I found one, and I unlinked my arm with Everett’s. I attempted to enter the bathroom alone, but as I was about to close the door his foot wedged it’s way in the crack. I gasped and Everett made his way in behind me and locked the door quickly behind him.
I looked up into his glistening emeralds that were filled with confusion. Just as quick as I looked at him, I looked away, and focused back down to my shoes. “What are you doing in here, Alpha Everett?” I asked with my head still down.
With a single finger, he slowly lifted my chin so I would meet his eyes. He had a concerned look on his face but he quickly scowled and let his finger drop. “Amelia,” the way he said my name sent shivers down my spine, “what happened here?” He grabbed my wrist which was still lightly bruised.
I gulped, “I fell.” Great, the typical domestic violence response. I mean it was true... mostly. I could hear a growl attempting to leave his lips, as he struggled to compose himself. Uh oh. He is not happy. Hopefully he can’t see through my happy, in love faćade.
“Okay, you fell,” He rolled his eyes. “But, why are you not healing?” He inquired with an expression of disbelief. Yup, he sees right through me.
I paused, unsure of how to answer. I couldn’t say anything without him suspecting everything being wrong. However, as he scanned my face for a crack in my mask, not answering was probably just as bad as telling the truth.
Instead, I let out a heavy sigh and rolled my eyes saying, “Do you mind, Alpha? I kind of need to use the restroom.”
“I do mind, actually.”
With my eyes never leaving his, I shrugged and smiled defiantly. I turned on my polished, red heels and walked towards the single stall, and took care of my business. After flushing, I walked out of the stall straightening and tugging at the tiny dress. I looked up to see Everett’s eyes trail up and down my body, looking concerned as ever. Must be his signature look. I instinctively crossed my arms in front of my body, as if I could hide from his gaze.
I scowled at him and with as much sarcasm I could come up with said, “What makes you think that?”
He just let out a small laugh. Music to my ears.
All too soon, he stopped laughing and became deadly serious, “So, do you want to talk about the fact that you are mates with one of the most insufferable wolves on this continent or what?”
My face fell at that exact moment and broke eye contact with him. What does he know? “Chris or you?”
I looked back up at him and he was staring at me with a blank face and slowly blinked a few times, as if daring me to insult him further by putting him in the same class as Chris.
“Please, why do you think I’m here to begin with? We’ve been getting reports from rogues for months that they were kicked out of the Carmichael pack for not complying to their... for lack of a better word, traditions.”
What does he know? No matter what though, I have to keep up my act. Or else Charlie might suffer. Also, who trusts a single thing that comes out of a rogues mouth? They are nothing but pack-less, vial animals. They have no respect for anyone but themselves. Everett is taking their reports seriously? Why?
“I really don’t know what you are talking about, Alpha Everett.” Determination in my eyes and a sweet, sugary smile on my lips.
He scoffed, “Right. Thought so.”
I shook my head and walked up to the sink to begin washing my hands. While I was washing, I glanced up at the mirror and my eyes locked with Everett’s. He slowly inched closer towards me, afraid he might scare me off. I turned off the running water, but kept my eyes on his in the mirror.
When he finally reached me, I could feel the heat radiating from him and onto my back. He slipped his hands around my waist and I closed my eyes. Loving the warmth and safety his embrace made me feel, I leaned back into his chest. Home. I’ve never felt more at home than right here.
He let out a hum of contentment and leaned in to whisper in my ear. “Mine.”
Even though I loved how that sounded rolling off his tongue, I opened my eyes and jumped out of his embrace as if he had burned me. Facing him, I said “Please, don’t say that. This can’t happen. I am about to be marked by Chris in front of everyone. So please, it’s better for everyone if you just stop.”
He furrowed his brow in anger as I mentioned Chris’ name. “I can take you right now and we can leave here and never look back. Please, Amelia.” He held his hand out to me as he pleaded with me.
No matter how much I wanted to leave with him, I knew if I did Charlie wouldn’t fair well. So I couldn’t. My heart and mind were finally in sync and wanted me to just grab his hand and run far, far away. But I couldn’t leave without Charlie.
“I can’t, Everett.”
“No, I really can’t.”
I pleaded him with my eyes, to make him understand. He just stared back, with his sad eyes and nodded once.
“Could you do me a favor?” I asked nervously and he nodded for me to continue. “Do you mind telling my dad I’m alright?”
He looked confused, unsure of who my father is, but nodded anyways, knowing that he was going to find out in a few minutes at the ceremony.
I attempted to step passed him and make my way to the door, but he grabbed my elbow and spun me around to face him once more. We looked in each other’s eyes and he slowly leaned in and placed a lingering kiss on my cheek before he whispered, “get to the rogues.”
With that he let go of me and linked our arms back together and with my face flushed and heart beating rapidly, he leads us out of the bathroom and back to the dining room.
After we returned, everyone had already finished their meals. I smiled broadly at Chris as I made my way up the stairs. We sat next to Chris like nothing ever happened.
As soon as his Alpha dismissed everyone, Chris hurried us out of the pack house and rushed us towards his lodge. As soon as we entered, he let go of my hand and faced me. “You did a good job tonight, mate. You have no idea how much it pleases me to know that you can follow simple instructions.” His act was long gone now and was replaced with his usual distasteful scowl.
