Chapter 15

I wake up to the sound of beeping. Wait that’s a machine. And that’s the trickle of water being helped into a person. Am I in my mom’s Hospital room again? Wait, why do I hurt all over?

My eyes flash open and I bolt upright, into a sitting position. Gasping as I feel the pain surrounding me. My eyes adjust and I see that I’m in a hospital room. Jaxon's sitting right beside me staring at me worried.

“Your dad just went to get lunch.” He explains. “I found you, you were beaten to a pulp in an alleyway.”

“I was?” I ask my voice breaking. I lick my cracked lips and taste blood.

“Yeah. Um, I’d rather not remember.” he says keeping his voice level.

“Jaxon, you shouldn’t be here, blood remember.” I say.

“I know, but I can’t leave you.” He says, and just then I realize he’s holding my hand.

“Have you been here the whole time?” I ask.

“Yes.” He nods.

“How long?” I wonder aloud.

“4 days 2 hours 3 minutes, and now 27 seconds.” he reads off the clock. “I was so scared.”

“You were?” I asked confused.

“Of course I was.” he says. Gripping my hand tighter. I smile, but even that gesture hurts, and I wince.

“Are you ok?” Jaxon asks standing up and touching my lips with the back of his hand.

“Yeah. I’m fine.” I say steadily.

“Ok. Are you hungry or thirsty?” He asks.

“No. But thank you.” I say.

“Ok, If you need anything, I’ll be right here.” He says pointing at the chair by my bed, and taking my hand again.

“Thank you.” I say, “Can I trust you with something?” I ask him, already knowing what his answer will be.

“Of course.” He says shocked.

“My brother moved to LA, when I was 13. He was 9 years older than me. He got attacked and died. Then we move here, and my mom gets attacked but luckily survives because she was found quickly afterwards by my father, and now I get attacked soon after only alive because you found me. Do you find that sort of strange?” I ask him.

“First of all, I didn’t know about your brother. I’m sorry. And second, yes I do find that strange and that’s why I’ve already been doing some work trying to find patterns suggesting who the attacker is and why he’s so interested in your family, I’ve got my friends searching for him.” Jaxon explains.

“Thank you. And by friends do you mean those 2 friends you have?” I ask.

“Yes, both Peet and Joe are helping but also the rest of the vampires who I could assemble, and that were interested in this case, and that live in LA.”

“Wow. Thank you for all this Jaxon. And I’d love to help search for an answer to all this. After All this is my family and the life I want to live is to help save other people he might attack.” I add.

“So it’s a he?” Jaxon asks.

“Yes. And he also looked like someone I knew vaguely. Not very well though because I couldn’t put a face to it. Just the build.” I tell Jaxon.

“Ok, I’ll definitely follow up on that.” Jaxon says.

It’s funny how when you know someone cares about you so much you become so used to it. At least that’s what happens with my parents and me. But with Jaxon. The vampire. It shocks me that he cares about me so much. That, and whenever I see him it’s like kissing him all over again, not to mention the electricity when we touch.

But back to the main focus. What could my attacker have wanted to kill me for? And could he be related to my moms attack just days before, and my brothers death 4 years ago?
