Chapter 23

Annabelle's point of view

I was reading my book when I heard footsteps. I knew it was Jax. Did he really think I couldn't hear him? I'm a werewolf.

"b-" he was going to say boo but I turned to him with a bored expression. His hands were in the air ready to shake me. His mouth was open as he looked at me with wide eyes.

"You do know I'm a werewolf, right?" I said as I closed my book. Hearing my words, Jax shut his open mouth as he lowered his hands. He really looked like he forgot it.

"uh, of course I do! I just thought it would be fun to prank you!" he said as he sat down next to me. I raised my brow at him and gave him a 'are you serious?' look. He really has grown more dumb.

"How long was I asleep?" he asked in attempt of changing the topic. It was a terrible attempt but I ignored it.

"not long, I think an hour or two? Maybe." I said shrugging. He wasn't asleep for long. He nodded his head as he looked at me almost squealing like a girl when they gossip. I really doubt if he's a girl or a boy sometimes.

"So what should we do now?! " he almost shouted. I looked at him with wide eyes. Is he crazy? This isn't my house where he can act like an idiot. This is the alpha's house. If he weren't the gama, I'm sure he would've never gotten the position.

"I don't know. I usually just read or think. What do you want to do?" I asked. I never got the chance to hang outside because I was scared of him.

"Should we go outside and play with the children?" he asked excitedly. Well, he seemed very excited. Where does he even get all this energy?

"Maybe, let me ask Xavier." I said as I shrugged. Jax obviously understood because he knew how the alpha was so nodding he sat there like a puppy.

Can I go and play with the children?

I mindlinked Xavier. I really sound like a little kid asking permission from his parents to play.

Yea, sure. The beta is with you, right?

I got a reply. At first I nodded but then realized that he couldn't see me so I said 'yes'. I heard and okay and after that our mindlink was cut.

"He said we can go." I said wearily to Jax who was looking at me with large expectant eyes. He really looked weird. Hearing my words, he jumped up with my hand in his as he practically dragged me to the gardens where the children would be.

I saw a lot of maids looking at Jax weirdly. I mean, I couldn't judge them, Jax really did look like an idiot.

Stepping into the gardens, the first thing I noticed was that they were big and beautiful. Second thing I noticed was that there were a lot of pups here. Third thing I noticed was that Jax was already gone from my side. Oh goddess, where is that dumb idiot?

Annoyed, I looked around and saw him sitting with a group of pups who looked like they were five or maybe six. They all looked at Jax with big wondering eyes. I turned my attention to Jax who was pretending to act like a fish? He really looked like a fish who was in the dire need of water.

"Oh my God, look! It's the Luna!!" a little boy shouted so loud that everyone's attention turned toward me. I gave an awkward smile. I seriously wasn't used to attention.

I sat down next to Jax and I saw that now every pup had their attention on me. They looked at me with big eyes. Goddess, they were adorable.

"So what are you all talking about?" I said as I clasped my hands together and looked at them with a sweet smile.

"why do you both look like angels?" a little girl asked and I heard Jax snort beside me. Jax was the last person you would ever think as an angel. I looked back at the girl and gave her a smile.

"And why do you think that, sweetie?" I asked the girl, she tilted her head slightly as she inspected me and Jax. Now all the pups were looking at us like we were angels.

"Because you have blond hair and blue eyes!" she said loudly. I laughed at that. She was just so adorable. I looked at Jax who was almost rolling laughing.

"Sweetie, a lot of people have blond hair and blue eyes." I said as I looked around and then I pointed at a girl who looked around eleven.

"Look, she is blond too. And so is he." I said as pointed at another boy who looked seven. The girl looked at them with wide eyes and and open mouth.

"So they all are angels!!" she yelled and squealed. Seeing this, all the kids smiled and yelled too. Okay, this was not what I had expected to happen.

"My mom is an angel too!" a little boy said.

"So is my dad!" a little girl added. I looked to my right to see Jax laughing like a maniac. I smacked him on his arm and he stopped laughing a little but his shoulders were still shaking by silent laughter.

"What are you guys talking about?" I hear a deep voice from behind me. I can already tell who it is. My body slightly froze but I gained the courage to turn around and look at Xavier who was looking at us with a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

"The Luna is an angel, alpha!" the little girl from before shouted. Xavier looked at her confused. Jax was now more serious. The little girl and all the children giggled as she said that.

"I found that a long time ago. But thank you for informing me." Xavier said causing a slight blush to cover my cheeks. Of course, he had always called me angel or Annabelle.

"You're welcome alpha!" the girl again said as she giggled. I looked at her and smiled. Adorable. The one word you would think looking at her.

"Beta, you may take your leave now." Xavier said. Jax stood up in a flash, nodding and bowing to Xavier he left, not before giving me and the children a wave. I waved back with the children said 'we will miss you brave, angel soldier', their words, not mine.

Xavier came down and sat next to me. He gave me a small smile before moving his attention to the pups.

"You have such pretty eyes alpha." the little girl said again. Girl did know how to talk and give compliments. The alpha, I mean Xavier chuckled hearing the little girl and said a sweet thank you. I did not know he was going to be sweet with children. But I guess, I don't know a lot about him.

"Why are you staring at me like that?" I hear Xavier say but I just tilt my head slightly to the side as I keep staring in those blue eyes. Those eyes held so much more than they show and I was determined to dive in the depth of them.

"It's rude to stare, you know?"

Finally snapping out of my staring contest, I look at Xavier who was looking at me with one eyebrow raised. I looked at the kids to see all of them looking at me with their mouths slightly hung open.

"You guys better close your mouths before a fly decides to make it it's new home."

Hearing me, all the kids close their mouth and I laugh at their faces. I moved my attention to Xavier and saw him looking at me with calculative eyes. What's up with us staring at each other like idiots?

"You do know that you are staring now. " I inform him, he just nods his head and gives me a little smile before looking at the kids who were talking to each other about something we were unaware of.

Did you find what you were looking for?

I heard a voice in my head and I looked at Xavier confused. What does he mean? I then realized that he meant by his eyes.

Your eyes begged me to venture deep but I couldn't do that just now. So I didn't found anything.

I replied. The kids had now dissappeared and were probably playing some game. I looked at Xavier to see him looking at me with his lips slightly parted.

Why not? Why couldn't you?

I heard again. I didn't know how to answer that. I didn't because I was scared that I would fall too deep in that endless pit and I didn't want that. I've heard people say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. If his eyes are the windows to his soul that I don't know if I am ready to know what hides behind those eyes.

We all have our reasons dear alpha.

With that, I cut off our mindlink and stood up leaving Xavier behind…
