Chapter 33 the one where Max stifles Louis
Louis looks around at everyone. He sees the gloom on their faces. He feels the hurt vibrating through his body but he closes his eyes and fought against Max. He can't give in to any emotions right now. He won't. He's this close to reaching his family and he wont back down. His heart was heavy. Dammit! He hated doing this. He hated feeling how Max felt. He hated the emotions. The guilt. But he's had to choose and he chose to get his family. His family ...not Max's. Max had them. Louis had nobody, if he lets Max back out! He would be dead!
Nothing can stop him now.
He holds onto his mother's hair while she lays her head on his chest. Her tears flowed. He feels the moisture gathering in his eyes also. He is feeling what Max is feeling. For the past couple hours, Louis has been assaulted with body spasms and Max fought to surface and the constant roaring sounds of his blood rushing around in his head. He was trying his best to ignore Max while paying attention to the reality in front him.
[LET ME OUT!]
Louis ignores him and winced as he felt a sharp pain pounding inside his brain that caused him to flinch. What the hell was happening? This never happened before.!
He sees Nate watching him from the spot he was sitting on the couch occupied by other relatives. He furrows and gives Louis a questioning look. Another occupant in the sitting area, one of Max's neice, rolls her eyes at him and turns away.
Louis flinches and almost pushes Max's mother off him when he feels the pain in his gut but Kailey just happens to walk behind her and pulls them both into a hug. His body felt as if it were going numb. He began perspiring and closed his eyelids trying to fight against the sensations that threatened stepping back from the embrace.
Another sharp pain strikes his abdominal area on the inside with such a force that it leaves Louis feeling as if his lungs ceased to work. He steps back, his face etched in pain and his legs almost give away as he stumbles grabbing the nearest thing.
Great....Just fucking great.
Nate grabs him before he falls, steadying him but still holding onto his back with one arm as he waits for his legs to settle with gravity. It was a losing battle evidently. Louis still has his hands on Nate's shoulders as he tries to breathe. He couldn't.
Fuck is Max doing?
[FUCK ARE YOU DOING ?] Louis asks him.
THAT'S MY FATHER. GET OUT!
Louis snickers despite the pain he was in.
[...WELL... I AM OUT.]
I NEED TO BE WITH MY FAMILY. THEY NEED ME.
"Hey. Are you okay?" Nate asks watching Louis in his eyes. He frowns when he sees his brother's face getting red.
Louis still couldn't breathe. How is this possible? How can Maximilian control his lungs?
"Mom is watching us man. Pull your shit together."
[YOU ARE HERE, AS FAR AS THEY KNOW YOU MORON! I NEED TO BREATHE. WE NEED TO BREATHE. STOP THAT!]
Louis was still confused at that behaviour. How was Max able to control his body? Almost a minute of silence follows and Nate shakes his shoulder.
"EY! What is going on? Are you having a panic attack? Now Max? Really?"
Louis looks towards Nate. His face is still bloodied. He clearly didn't shower yet. He looked pretty banged up too. The van flipped a few times he said earlier. The old man wasn't thrown out of the van like Nate was but with the impact things weren't looking too good for him. Maybe Louis should let Max out. What if the old guy didn't make it. He really didn't want that guilt.
But his family...
Louis knows if he lets Max back out, chances are he will fight with all his might to keep him out. He needed his family too. He had to find them. And he wasn't willing to risk that, not when he was so close to getting them.
GO AHEAD AND DON'T BREATHE. I'M NOT LETTING YOU OUT.
[ARE YOU CRAZY? WE WILL DIE.]
Louis remembers that he was an ace swimmer back in high school. He could hold on a little while longer.
GO AHEAD. YOUR BODY NOT MINE.
[ARE YOU STUPID?LET ME OUT.]
Louis feels the anger radiating throughout his body now all traces of his earlier sadness and gloom gone. Max is way past caring.
NAH. YOUR FUNERAL.
Louis hopes that will settle it. That ought to calm him back down. His death.
He was wrong. It only infuriated him more.
He heard the shrill ringing of a telephone and a few seconds later, "WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?''
Louis feels the darkness overcoming him as his vision is filled with dark spots. His body grows cold and he feels the perspiration on his skin. Nate is shouting at him but he hears nothing as he feels his knees dropping to the floor. His legs gives out under him and he sees everything in slow motion as his hands grabs at the corner of the space saver. His fingers pull the little cloth occupying the top shelf bringing the four picture frames of Max's happy family crashing to the floor with him. One shattered framed, with Max and his father faced him on the floor. Poetic.
The last thought Louis has as his mind going blank was oh crap this is Max's body not mine. Louis held the unbeatable record for holding his breath for three minutes and ten seconds flat.
But Max ? He was never good at sports.
