"How did it go?" asked Sonia from the other end of the phone.
"It was good but I did find some mistakes but I think it will be good," I said as I looked left and right before crossing the street.
"Great!" she replied.
"Okay, I'm gonna hang up now. Let me reach my apartment first I'm walking back home now. I'll call you back" I said and looked at my watch to find it past 5 O' clock in the evening.
"Okay see ya,, " she said and we hung up on each other.
I took the tram to reach back home quickly as I was living alone here I had to cook by myself. Today was just not the day. I am tired and the only thing that I wanted at the current time was to reach home and had a good warm shower and eat some delicious dinner with wine and sleep.
I looked out of the tram to people and traffic. Some were walking away doing their own business, while some stood and chatted with each other, some teenagers looked as if they were planning to do some kind of prank while some rode their own vehicles back home or maybe to somewhere.
A group of guys came beside the tram where I was sitting on their bike and waved at me. I waved back to which they grinned and took another direction away from the tram but not before giving a final glance towards my way. I chuckled at them and shook my head.
On my way back home, I kept on thinking about what to make for the dinner. I felt my phone vibrating and I took it out to find a text message from Unity. It read "Hey! I have sent the documents which you asked for. The delivery boy called me and told me that you weren't present to take the document. So, I called Miss Browne and asked her to keep your document. Make sure to take it from her."
After reading it, I replied "Okay! I got it".
Miss Browne was a lady in her late sixties who lived next to my apartment.
She was the sweetest lady I ever met. Ever since I have got here she has been a real help to me. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law but currently she is alone as her son and daughter-in-law has gone out for vacation leaving her alone in the whole apartment.
As I stepped onto my building perimeter, through my peripheral vision I saw a slick black car pulling over. I didn't pay any attention to it and went inside the building nodding at the guard with a smile who greeted "Good evening" to me.
I waited for the lift and when the door pinged open, I walked in and punched my floor number on it. The door began to slide close when my handbag fell down from my hand and everything came out of it. I cursed under my breath and got down picking it all one by one back into my bag. I did saw the door sliding open again. Maybe someone stopped it. I saw a pair of legs with expensive polished shoes walking inside.
I concentrated on picking my things up ignoring the stranger. When I was done I stood up but lost my balance when the lift suddenly stopped with a tremble. The lights went off and I leaned against the wall of the lift to support myself.
"Gosh!" both of us said at the same time.
Though I couldn't see anything in the dark, I could practically feel the stranger next to me leaning against the wall.
I got my balance and stood away as much as possible from the stranger.
"What the bloody hell?" I heard him curse.
I took my phone out and lit the flashlight and directed it towards the lift buttons. I punched every button on it and even tried on the emergency button. But my attempts were going in vain.
"Hello?" I screamed from my place.
"Is anybody there? We are stuck in here" I yelled, "open the door."
"Hell-" I was cut off by the stranger.
"Ssh will you just put it down? My eardrum hurts" he complained.
"What do you expect me to do then?" I asked irritated.
"Just keep quiet. It's may be a temporary power cut or something" he said and I rolled my eyes at him. Nevertheless, I quit shouting and using the light turned around.
"You!" we both said in unison seeing each other's face.
It was the same guy two days back on that train.
"What in the world was he doing in my apartment building?" I thought.
"What are you doing here?" I asked somewhat shocked.
"I could ask the same thing. What are you doing here?" he asked in a rude tone.
"Well mind your tone and to your question, I live here. This is mine apartment building" I gritted out.
"You? You mean to say you live here?" he asked in astonishment to which I tilted my head to the side not getting what he meant.
He looked to the side and shook his head before looking my way "Nevermind, I came here to visit someone" he said and I shrugged before turning to my left and leaning against the wall.
I dialed the guard's number and waited for him to pick it up.
"Hello?" he answered.
"Steven what's going on? The lift has stopped in the middle and we are stuck inside. Get us out" I said and heard sounds of chair screeching.
"Lift has stopped? I am sorry for the inconvenience Ma'am let me get there" he said and I disconnected the call.
"If you already had the number then what the heck was all that with that screaming?" he scoffed at me.
"Can't you mind your own business?" I asked as calmly as I could.
"As if I have got something to do here, in this bloody lift" he huffed and crossed his arms across his chest.
"Just shut up," I said and glared at him through the darkness.
"You shut up" he retorted back.
"What is your problem?" I asked irritated.
"Well, currently you are my problem. I can't stand the sight of you. You are like unlucky for me. Wherever and whenever I meet you, something worse happens with me. First I had to take that train and reach late for my meeting and today I'm stuck here in this lift with you" he said which made me clench my fist.
"Its great to know that you were late. You deserved that for not knowing courtesy. A man who doesn't know how to use his mouth while talking to a woman is not a man with discipline and hence he is considered as ugly not attractive" I said and smirked when I saw him clenching his fist and glaring at me.
"What did you just say?" he asked through gritted teeth.
"Oh, so you are deaf too?" I taunted.
"Yo-" he took a step pointing an accusing finger towards me but stopped when we heard the guard.
"Ma'am?" the guard asked hitting on the lift's door.
"Ye-Yeah! We are here" I replied.
"How many of you are there? It looks like we have some problem with the lift and it may not work till the repairman gets here" he said from the other side.
"What? And how long is it going to take for the repairman to reach here and do his work?" I asked.
"Probably an hour. It looks like this lift has the problem the other two are working properly" he replied.
"What? I can't wait here that long. Just get me out of here" I said rubbing my forehead feeling the headache that was now starting.
"Okay let me get the key first," he said and I got it that he went away probably to get the key.
"See? The other lifts are working just perfectly fine. Since I'm with yo-" he said but stopped when I directed the flashlight towards his direction and glared at him warning him to finish what he said.
Surprisingly, he got the message and shut his mouth. The guard returned and we heard some sounds before the door was forcibly slid open.
"Are you alright?" He asked and I saw a man and a woman standing next to him. Probably some people living on the floor.
"Yes," I said looking up at him.
The lift had stopped just below the floor which made it only half of the part of the lift from the top reaching the floor. We were down while the people outside the lift looked down at us through the door.
"Give me your hand," Steven said and I tried to reach out for his hand but I failed because it was just too high.
"I can't," I said and stood on my tip toes trying to reach out.
"Just little more," he said as he stretched his hand even more towards my direction.
"I can't reach you," I said and squealed in shock when I felt a pair of hands on my waist.
"What do you think are you doing?" I asked when I felt that stupid arrogant stranger's hand on my waist.
"Lifting you of course. Now just cooperate. I am trying to help so that I could get out too" he said and reluctantly I nodded.
He lifted me up and Steven got hold of my hand. The woman and the man present there too reached out to help me but most importantly, I was shocked at his strength.
He lifted me up with ease. That made me wonder how powerful and strong he really was. I shook my head at this and with utter difficulties finally made it out of the lift.
I took a deep breath and exhaled loudly.
"Are you alright?" the woman asked and I nodded smiling at her.
"Yeah! Thank You for your help" I said and got up on my feet.
I saw as the stranger got out of the lift without anyone's help. He stood up on his feet and dusted his suit using his handkerchief muttering something to himself.
"Thank You for your help," I said trying to be polite and grateful for he helped me getting out of the lift.
"Whatever" was his only answer as he turned around and walked away without a glance.
"So rude," the woman next to me said eyeing his retreating back.
I shook my head and sighed.
"Unbelievable," I thought and after thanking once more to the people who helped me out, I walked towards my apartment using the staircase.
"Finally," I said as I got under the warm water and felt as my body relaxed under the running water.
That night while I drifted off to sleep, the only thought I had was a wish, a wish never to run into that arrogant man ever.
