Thirteen

When Kasper pulled up to a rather large looking mansion, to say I was impressed was an understatement. I hopped off from his bike and walked forwards a few steps. Everyone else was pulling up around us, only some of them were just as shocked as I was.

I jumped slightly when I felt a hand touch my back. Looking up, I saw the reassuring face of Kasper.

When we reached the door, there was two massive men standing there with guns in their hands. They nodded to Julian and one of them opened the door to let us all in.

When I stepped into the house, I was immediately hit with and aura of danger but warmth. It was a weird mix. There was a lot of men and women who were bustling about. Most of which had an aura of importance.

Everyone stopped when we walked in, all eyes moving to look at us.

“Why are they staring at us?” I asked Julian.

“They’re not, they’re staring at you little sister,” he said.

I looked around again and the direction that they were looking at did confirm they were looking at me.

“Julian, Daddy was asking for you.” My attention was pulled from the onlookers to glance down and see a small blonde girl talking to Julian.

She could not have been more than six or seven. She was dressed in fluffy pink pyjamas and had bright yellow ducky slippers on her feet. I double checked the time on my phone. It was almost midnight and this kid was still awake?

“Okay Alexis, we’ll be right there,” Julian told the girl.

Daddy?

Alexis turned to go but her eyes caught me, and they looked excited.

“Oh my god, is this her? Is this my big sister?” She asked, her voice filled with excitement.

I didn’t know what to do so I just smiled at the kid.

“Yeah, but Lex, we’ll talk about this later, okay?” Julian told her.

She nodded and skipped off down the hall, occasionally looking back at me.

“Come on, this way guys,” Julian motioned for us to follow him.

I looked back at all my friends who were following us. Dustin gave me a reassuring smile as I did. We turned into a large room which was filled with at least half a dozen other people.

“No, I dont care what his excuse is this time, this bastard owes me a lot of money so tell him to get it to me by Friday or he wont like the consequences,” the strong voice of my father said.

The man who he was talking to nodded and hastily left the room, the front door slamming a few moments later.

Dad shook his head and sighed, mumbling something under his breath. Julian cleared his throat which got his attention. He looked up from the desk he was at and straight at me. Whatever annoyance and coldness he was feeling immediately washed away and he smiled.

“Shay,” Dad breathed out.

I didn’t know what to say to him, I just stared blankly. This was all to surreal.

“Everyone, get out!” Dad barked at the room.

There was no hesitation or questions, everyone just left.

“Please, all of you, come and sit,” Dad said to us.

There were four couches in the middle of the room, all facing in on each other, a coffee table in the centre.

I sat down on one couch in between Kasper and Aylee. The couch to the right was occupied by Olly and Poppy then to the left was Dustin and Luca. Julian sat down next to our dad on the opposite couch to me.

“Sooo…” Dad started.

“Oh, for God’s sake, you’re like an awkward teenager,” Julian mumbled.

Dad glared at his son. “No one asked your opinion.”

“I was just stating the obvious,” Julian defended.

“Shut up,” Dad said. “Anyway, what the hell happened tonight guys? Other than Kasper almost getting his face blown off.”

“Her dickhead of an ex got jealous,” Aylee said.

“I guess that, also Kasper, Aylee and Julian, you have your own fucking gun, why not use it?” Dad snapped.

They have what? I look at Kasper puzzled, and he just looked slightly guilty. Julian just shrugged and I felt Aylee tense.

“Well I would of if I didn’t already have like six pointed at me. They would have been able to notice me trying to get mine out,” Kasper grumbled.

“Yeah and I –“I stopped listening to the conversation when Aylee started speaking.

Kasper, Aylee and my dad bickered amongst themselves about the guns. I glanced at my other friends who had barely said a word since this whole thing started.

“I just need a minute!” I shouted.

The room fell silent and I stood up. I walked for the door, closing it behind me. The house seemed quiet now, as if everyone had gone. There were only a few men who stood around with guns in their hands, ready for action. I moved to the stairs and sat down on the third step, putting my head in my hands.

“Are you okay?”

I whirled around ready to tell whoever it was to go fuck themselves but froze when I saw Alexis standing a couple steps above me. She was still in her pyjamas but now had a dressing gown on and a fluffy yellow duck in her arms.

“Oh yeah, I’m totally fine,” I said.

“I think I would believe you more if you weren’t crying,” she said.

Damn, this kid was not a fool.

“Has someone said something mean?” Alexis asked me, sitting down on the same step as I was.

“No, just a lot of stuff has happened tonight, and it was a bit much,” I explained.

“Okay,” she paused. “Are you really my sister?”

“Erm… yeah I think so,” I replied.

“That’s great! I mean I love Julian but he’s a boy and boys are kinda yucky plus I have always wanted a sister to play with!” She said, her voice filled with excitement.

I laughed at her; she had cheered me up.

“Lex, what are you still doing up? It’s midnight.” We both turned to look at Julian.

Alexis had a guilty look on her face but smiled sweetly.

“I just wanted to be involved, I really like my new sister,” she beamed.

“Good, now you can see her tomorrow. Go to bed,” Julian said, his voice slightly stern.

“Fine!” Alexis huffed but got up. She moved to the side of the stairs where she could reach Julian’s cheek and kissed it. “Love you.”

“Love you too.” Julian smiled at the little girl.

She turned around to me and threw her arms around my neck before giving me a kiss on the cheek too. She smiled at me once again before running upstairs with her duck.

Julian sat down next to me, his eyes showing concern. “Give me an honest answer when I ask: are you okay?”

“Yes and no,” I told him. “Yes, because I finally met my dad and no because… well… tonight alone, I was threatened by Jax, met my dad, found out that you, Aylee and Kasper all have guns and you guys seem to be involved in a mafia type group and its just very overwhelming.”

“I get that, but Dad wants to talk to you and you alone. He has sent everyone to the living room to watch TV,” Julian informed me, rolling his eyes.

I nodded and got up, making my way back downstairs but Julian stayed put. I turned back around and asked him the question which has been on my mind the past hour.

“Julian… am I safe with Kasper?”

Julian smiled at me softly before saying: “more than you will ever know, baby sister.”

I gave him a funny look before going back the way I came. The door was still open, but the room was no empty except for my dad.

He was sitting in the same place as before and had been staring at the door when I arrived. He stood up straight away and moved around the couches to stand in front of me.

He was a lot taller than I was. He was well built with muscle and had the same colour blonde hair as Julian, Alexis and me.

Before I even realised what, he was doing, he grabbed me and pulled me into a hug. I was shocked at first but after a moment, I sunk into him. It felt good to be hugged by my dad, I had always wondered what it would be like. We stood like that for what seemed like hours before he pulled away. We made our way towards one of the couches and sat down.

“First of all, you’re so beautiful, you remind me of your mother in that way,” Dad said.

“She didn’t talk about you much, or at all until yesterday,” I told him.

“Yeah, I’m not actually surprised to hear that if I’m honest.” He sighed and a look of sadness washed over him.

“She told me there was reasons she didn’t want to stay here, but she wouldn’t tell me what,” I paused. “But I’m guessing that these were her reasons?” I gestured to my surroundings.

“Well yeah, to but it bluntly, I’m the leader of a Mafia faction which deals in a lot of illegal shit,” Dad said.

“Huh…”

“But I’m not a bad guy, I promise you that. Its just a family business thing. My great-grandfather was the one who started it,” Dad told me.

“So, Julian, Kasper and Aylee? They’re part of it too?” I asked. He nodded. “Doing what?”

“Uh, Aylee is very good at the technical side of things, she is able to hack into a lot of high-profile sites and documents but Julian and Kasper, they’re more…”

“Hands on?” I finished for him.

“You could say that I suppose,” Dad mumbled although I had a feeling, I knew exactly what he meant.

“Your mother was just worried that you would get hurt which is why she ran and hid, and let me tell you, she is bloody good at it. No one was able to find you guys.” Dad continued.

I nodded, taking this all in. It was a lot but now a lot made sense, like that bit of paper. Oh, speaking of that paper. I stood up quickly and pulled it from my pocket. I had stuffed it there before I left the house, I was going to show Kasper before all of this happened.

I handed it to Dad, he unfolded it and read it quickly. He chuckled slightly and rolled his eyes.

“Your uncle really is a dumbass,” he mumbled

“What?” I asked.

“Yeah, he actually works for me, along with Kasper’s dad, and I asked him to write a report on you because I wanted to know how you were doing and how you were fitting in,” he explained.

“Why not just ask Julian?” I asked him.

“I didn’t tell him actually, he didn’t find out you were his sister until last night when you found out, I didn’t want to pressure you or confuse you.”

“Oh, I can understand that.” I smiled at him and he smiled back. “Who is Alexis by the way?”

“I wondered when you would ask that but nine years ago, I met a woman called Laura and fell in love then asked her to marry me. We had Alexis but unfortunately, Laura was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and died when Alexis was only eight months old,” Dad told me.

“Oh, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be, the time I spent with Laura was amazing, but the universe had other plans. I’m just sad Alexis didn’t get to meet her mother properly.” Dad had a sad look on his face.

“So, I have a brother and a sister?” I asked, changing the tone of the conversation.

“Yes, yes you do and they’re both a pain in the arse sometimes,” Dad said then laughed, making me laugh with him

“I resent that you know.” We both looked up to the doorway and there stood Julian with a smirk on his face.

“Well its true and you know it,” Dad teased.

“Whatever, anyway we’re all kinda wondering what’s going to happen now because this shit with Jax has gotta end sometime,” Julian said, his tone becoming more serious.

“Oh yeah, that dickhead, right I’ll come through.” Dad stood and walked out of the door, Julian and I followed suit.

We turned left and entered a very big living room. There was a grand fireplace in the middle of the room which was surrounded by two massive puffy L-shaped couches, which my friends were currently draped across. The L-couches were linked by a side table with a lamp on it. In front of the couches, there was a big coffee table, which currently held a load of snacks. Above the fireplace was a flat screen TV, which presently had the movie ‘Pitch Perfect’ on it’s screen. On the left side of the room, there was a black grand piano which faced the musician into the room. One the right side of the room, there was a line of bookcases which were filled to the brim with books and in front of that was a simple but elegant chess table.

Luca was the first to notice us, he smiled warmly in my direction which brought the attention of others.

“Hey guys,” Luca greeted.

I smiled at Luca, making my way to sit down on the edge of one of the couches next to Poppy. I kept myself from looking at Kasper yet, unsure of my feelings right now.

“Right, so Jax…” Dad started.

“Bastard,” Aylee mumbled.

“Exactly Aylee but let’s start with, how does he know you, Shay?” Dad asked me directly.

When I told my story to my father, I saw him go through a ray of emotions before finally finishing with pure fury. He said nothing for a moment when I was finished, only kept his eyes down to the floor. When he looked up and his eyes met mine, they were glistening with tears.

“I’m actually going to fucking kill him.” His voice was cold and deadly.

“Yeah, that was how we all felt when she told us this,” Dustin said, breaking his silence.

“Okay, so its very late and I know you all have school tomorrow, so we’ll have to pick this up again after school. I want you all to go home, get some sleep and meet back here straight after school,” Dad instructed.

We all gathered our things and made our way to the door; we said our goodbyes to my dad and Julian before going to our respective vehicles. Dustin was staying with Luca, so they got a lift from Olly, along with Aylee. Kasper took me home on his bike, we were both silent until we pulled up to my house.

I jumped off the bike and so did Kasper. He leaned against it while I stood in front of him.

“Shay?” Kasper’s voice was hesitant.

Holy fuck. Did tonight really just happen? Or was this a dream? I’m probably going to wake up any second in my room with my brain laughing at me. I looked at Kasper, he was watching me with an unreadable look. I can’t believe this whole time; he was involved in the mafia. Although, I suppose there was signs I guess when I think back.

How did I feel about him now?

I continued to look at Kasper, as if trying to work it out right now. Well, I certainly don’t hate the boy, and, in all honesty, I think I am a little bit in love with him. Wait, what? Did I just admit that?

“Shay?”

I stopped my internal rant to look at the gorgeous boy who was stood in front of me.

“Do you hate me now? Because I kept this part of my life from you, I’m sorry. I really am but – “

I cut Kasper off as I crushed my lips to his. He was shocked for a moment before he responded and quite fiercely. He placed his hands on my waist and gripped me tightly. I moved my hands up and raked them through his hair, pulling and tugging. Kasper groaned as I did this which made me smile into the kiss. I broke the kiss and pulled on Kasper’s hand, tugging him towards the gate. He didn’t say anything as he followed me through and up to the house.

We made our way in and up to my room. As soon as the door shut, I was pushed up against it and Kasper’s lips were now back on my own. There was a desperate need for each other as we kissed. Kasper pinned my hands above my head as he kissed down my neck which made me moan. He stroked his fingers down my sides before ripping my shirt over my head. I yanked his shirt off and grazed my nails down his body. Kasper placed his hands under my thighs to lift me up. I wrapped my legs around his waist as my lips found his again.

He moved us off the door and over to the bed, dropping me down on it. He stood there for a second, admiring me before crawling on top of me again, his eyes locking with my own. He started to kiss down my neck then continued down and over my stomach. He undid my jeans and slid them down my legs, pulling my shoes off as he did so. He kissed back up my body before reattaching his lips to mine.

I locked my legs around his waist and flipped us, so I was now straddling him. I hovered over him for a second before kissing down his chest, biting slightly as I did so. I yanked Kasper’s pants off, throwing them to one side. I kissed him again and he flipped us, so he was now hovering over me again. The rest of our clothes came off quickly and the way Kasper worked was like pure magic.

An hour later, Kasper and I were entwined in each other, breathing heavily. We didn’t say anything for a minute as we both caught our breath. I moved onto my side and lay my head on to Kasper’s chest; his arm was around me and he was lightly stroking my hair.

“By the way, I dont hate you, just thought you’d like to know,” I said to Kasper, breaking the silence.

A chuckle emerged from him and he kissed the top of my head.

“I kinda figured that one out,” he replied.

Not long after, I fell asleep snuggled up to the boy I was certain I was in love with.
