The Twenty Sixth Chapter
Within a week, everything is planned. My only job is to take the invitations to the post office. Thankfully, Jake gave us an extension. He's going to bring her to the wedding. According to him, Tamara has been really closed off lately. She stays in her room, and not rarely, she dissapears. She always returns when it gets dark, but she's hardly ever home. I arrive at my destination.
"Hi. Are these wedding invitations?" the girl behind the front desk asks me as I set the box of envelopes on the marble counter. I keep my head down.
"Yes. I'm very nervous," I look up at her. Her eyes widen, then she tries to recover.
"I would be, too. So far, my love life hasn't gone very far."
"Mine has been shitty, but it improved. Good luck with yours." I finish what I'm doing and leave.
My phone vibrates in my pocket.
"This is Jame," I sigh into the phone.
"Hey. Did you send the invites?" John asks. He's been unable to sleep because of Tamara. Every time he sees me, he practically pounces on me.
"I just left the post office. I promise. Bring the adoption papers to the wedding. I'll fill them out and get them to you the day after. Okay?"
"Okay." For a few seconds, there's silence. "Yvette called yesterday."
"What'd she say?" He needs her back in his life.
"She's going to come to the wedding. As soon as I see her, I know I'll freak out. I haven't seen her in weeks. No telling who she's seen or where she's been."
"I'm sorry, man. She'll come back as soon as I take Tamara. If she doesn't, I'll–"
"Don't. I'll move on if she doesn't want me. By this time, she's had time to think things through. I'll be fine. Talk to you later," he hangs up.
After a while, I get home and flop on the couch. Valeria comes in.
"What happened?" she moves my legs off the edge and sits in their place. Because of my metal leg's weight, I sink off the couch and onto the floor.
"Nothing good. But, Yvette told John she's coming to the wedding."
"That's good. Have you seen Dallyn and Alex anywhere?"
"No. Not lately." As soon as I say it, they walk in the front door.
"Where have you been?" Valeria interrogates them.
"Out of the house. Since my love is across the country and she doesn't have one," Dallyn points to Alex, "we went to see a movie."
"Nothing happened, right? If so, I'm telling Connor," I promise.
"Speaking of me," Connor lets himself in.
"Connor!" Dallyn runs towards him and pulls him into a kiss. I love them. I couldn't live without them in my life. They've changed me.
"I thought you had to stay longer!" Dallyn pulls away, tears threatening to make an appearance.
"They let me back early because of the wedding," Connor informs him.
Alex sits on my real leg. Not the most comfortable.
"See why I love them? If I could have one of them, I would. But, I wouldn't hurt them like that," Alex lays her head on my shoulder.
"Okay. I'm sorry. I'm getting uncomfortable," I lift her off of me.
"I could tell. You make a face when someone gets too close," she says, looking where she shouldn't. I move back onto the couch with Valeria. She gets closer to me, but I don't get uncomfortable with her. That game everyone played at parties, the one where you move closer to someone and ask if they're comfortable, I would be comfortable with her.
"Hey, everyone!" Connor acknowledges us with his arm around Dallyn's waist.
"Hey! Long time no see!" I get up from my spot on the couch. I reach for a handshake, but am rewarded with a hug.
"I only came for the wedding. And Dallyn," he pulls back.
"I'm glad you did."
"The bachelor party is next Wednesday," Dallyn states.
"Nice. I'll be there," Connor plants another kiss on Dallyn's forehead. "I found a motel. I'm going to stay there."
"I'll come with. I was already in a different one," Dallyn and Connor walk out front.
"I'll take Ty's room. You guys need to be together again," Alex claps.
"Finally!" I yell, jumping up.
"Calm down. I'm guessing you missed me," Valeria pulls my arm.
"Just a little." I fall onto her lap as she attacks my lips. She pulls my shirt off, trying to get closer. It works. I decide to let her take the lead. She pushes me onto the floor, kneeling in front of her. I hear footsteps. She obviously doesn't care. She wraps her legs around me, so I put my hands on her thighs. Her hair falls beside my cheeks as her head tilts down at me. My turn. Not breaking our connection, I climb onto the couch. I push her into the back of the couch, wanting to feel all of her. To taste all of her. She slowly, hesitantly, pushes me away.
"I'd better go find Alex." She leaves the room. I sink into the couch, wishing it didn't have to end. Hoping it never does. Knowing she's the one.
