Display Of Love

I looked at my watch and sighed. I was nervous. It might have been unbelievable for many others, but the thought of arranging an event like this was scary, especially with so much at stake.

I quickly pressed the call button, waiting for the person on the other end to receive it. Time was running out.

“Is everything ready? Its almost time” I stressed.

“Yes. But, she is going to leave soon. If you don’t hurry, you won’t be able to catch her” Dane’s voice was as tense as mine. It was clear that he too was extremely nervous. But, nobody could really blame him.

“I am about to go there now. But, just be ready. She will be there within approximately ten minutes. Nothing should go wrong” with that, I cut off the call and rushed out.

I took the elevator to Kiara’s floor and stood outside, waiting for her to get out.

It didn’t take too long.

She stepped out on the corridor, a bag on her hand. She looked confused, probably because the whole floor was empty and usually she was one of the first ones to leave.

I smiled.

She really had no idea what was going on.

But, my smile disappeared as soon as her eyes fell on me.

She looked surprised first. Then, her brows furrowed and a flicker of hurt sparked in them before anger and hatred took its place.

“What are you doing here?” she spat, tone colder than ice.

“I want to talk” I insisted, keeping my tone soft but authoritative and insisting. I needed her to listen.

She laughed, “talk?”, she mocked, “Do you think I want to listen to you boasting about how you’ve won Dane? I don’t care. You can keep that cheater. I should’ve realized if he could break up with a girl he’d been dating for two years for someone he’d known for only two months, I am no one he wouldn’t want to get rid off as soon as possible” she said, pain shining in her eyes but her face still in a mask of lethal anger.

I felt another wave of guilt washing over me, but I forced it away. I was going to fix it. I was going to help her become happy again.

“He didn’t kiss me, Kiara” I stated.

“I am not stupid, Ivy. I saw it with my own two eyes” she barked, turning away. She wasn’t ready to listen.

So, I went forward and grabbed her hand, trying to stop her from leaving.

It wasn’t a really good idea.

She turned around and her palm hit my cheek at the speed of lightning. My head snapped to the other side due to its force, but I didn’t let go of her hand.

I felt the familiar burn of the rising anger in me and I took deep breaths to reign it in. I probably deserved that slap but that doesn’t mean it didn’t wound my ego.

When I calmed down enough to not slap her back, I turned my head to look at her. She was red with anger, her eyes burning with chained fury.

I kept my face expressionless because showing her how angry I currently felt, wasn’t a good idea.

“I would suggest you don’t do that again. I won’t be able to control myself the next time” I told her calmly.

“You deserved it” she spat, trying to pull her arm out of my hold.

I nodded. “I know. I probably deserve a lot more than just the slap but my ego doesn’t know that. And if you do it again, I won’t be able to control myself” I informed, “Anyway, you really need to listen cause I think you would regret it if you don’t.”

Her glare hardened. “Spit it. I don’t have all day.”

I sighed. “Dane didn’t kiss me that day. I kissed him. I convinced him to talk and dragged him to that balcony and kissed him. Don’t ask me why cause I’m still trying to figure that out. But, it wasn’t Dane’s mistake. I forced him.”

Her eyes widened and hope sprung in them. “He didn’t kiss you?”

I smiled. “No, he didn’t. Just think about it. If he really was cheating on you, he wouldn’t have kissed me in a place where he would probably get caught.”

Her eyes glazed over, showing that she was lost in thought.

After a moment, her eyes widened and her mouth gasped open. “Oh my god, he didn’t. I just pushed him away. I didn’t give him a chance to explain. Oh god, I need to find him. I need to apologize.”

The sudden burst of energy in her surprised me. She was fidgeting harshly, trying to get away from my grip so she could go and find Dane.

“Let go off me, Ivy. You’ve done enough damage already. I need to go and fix it. Let me go” she huffed, yanking harder with desperation gleaming on her eyes.

“I will. But, you need to see something first” I let her know as I dragged her smaller frame towards the elevator.

Now, I was completely sure that nothing would go wrong. She loved him as much as he loved her. I could see it clearly now.

I felt more confident that it would all work out.

I felt sure that there was no way she’d walk away.

“No, I won’t let you cause any more damage. You’ve shown me enough. Let go off me” she yelled.

I rolled my eyes, unable to help it. “I promise you that will thank me for this. Just come.”

She released a low growl but stopped struggling. It made me sigh with relief.

As we reached the desired floor, we got down. Holding her arm, I led her to the cafeteria.

The door was closed. I shoved it open and turned to Kiara. I grabbed her hand and pulled her inside.

The whole café was dark and there was pin-drop silence. Nothing could be seen inside except darkness.

I pushed her forward and stepped back.

She turned around to look at me. “What’s going on, Ivy?” she hissed.

“Just look ahead” I urged.

She turned around just in time to see a picture of her laughing being displayed on the wall.

As the video projection continued playing, another unfamiliar face popped up.

A soft gasp escaped Kiara’s mouth.

“Mom” whispered Kiara.

My eyes widened in understanding.

Truthfully, I had no idea of what goes on in the video since I asked Dane to make it.

I didn’t know anyone in Kiara’s family and I didn’t think any of Kiara’s friends would listen to me. So, I assigned Dane to this job while I made arrangements for the rest of the plan.

The montage continued playing for the next five minutes, showing short clips of different friends and family members of Kiara, giving speeches about how wonderful Kiara is and how good Dane and she was together. All the while Kiara watched silently, a large smile widening on her face.

At last, the face of Dane appears in the video.

He looked nervous as he pulled at the collar of his shirt and cleared his throat.

I looked at Kiara to observe her expressions.

Her eyes were already misty. They became wetter as she saw Dane’s face.

He started speaking. “Kiara, I honestly have no idea about what to say. And I have no idea about how much my words would actually mean to you. But, I am just gonna say them anyway.

“Kiara, the first time I saw, the only words running through my head was that I had never seen anyone as beautiful as you. I wanted to know you. And, then, one day, I talked to you. Slowly, I got to know you and we became friends.

“The more I got to know you, the more I thought about how beautiful you really are. You are the most beautiful person, inside and out. The closer I got to you, the more I thought that you were made for me. And the first time I kissed you, I realized that there was no way I couldn’t have you. I still remember that day.”

He sighed. “Kiara. We went through a few bumps before we could be together but we finally did find our way to each other, eventually. And now, a misunderstanding pulled us away from each other again.

“You probably already know this now, but I just want to tell you again that it was all a misunderstanding. That I didn’t do what you think I did.

“And also that I love you. You are my star and I don’t want to ever lose you. I love you, Kiara and I won’t be able to go on if you leave me. So, Kiara, Don’t say no. Please.”

And then, the video stopped, making the room go dark again.

Suddenly, all the lights turned on and the whole room came into view.

It was unrecognizable from before.

The whole room was decorated in pink and golden balloons and other decors. Photos upholding different memories of them together were hanging on the walls.

And in the center of the room, 8 people wearing pink and golden stood, holding cards that read out the following words, “MARRY ME?”

And before them stood Dane.

He was kneeling on the ground, looking extremely anxious. His hair was messy and his shirt was disheveled. He looked like he was standing outside during a storm. And on his hand was a small box, displaying a beautiful diamond ring.

“Marry me?” he whispered low.

But, the room was silent enough for his words to pierce through it.
