Chapter Ten

We’d been here a week and we started to get into a routine, Shaun wouldn’t let me leave without someone by my side like a child as he got the others to agree that I had no common sense after the incident with Craig.

Some of the guys had found part time jobs in local garages and shops which kept them busy, not that we needed the money.

I was always first one up and began cooking the huge amounts of food we needed in the mornings and then would be joined by Damien as we danced about with each other laughing and dishing out the food.

Rob, Luka, James and Wayne leave for work.

Tom avoids me and goes for a run, comes back to eat and then disappears again.

Shaun sticks around with me, Savannah and Elisha.

Tammy takes Layla to her new school and got herself a job in the local salon.

The day goes slowly and then everyone gets home, eats and goes to bed.

It was the most boring week I had ever had.

“I’m going for a walk” I say as I walk out the lounge while Shaun, Elise, Luka and Savannah are all cuddled up together.

“Not on your own you’re not” Shaun said as he continued to kiss Elise.

“Watch me” I say stubbornly as I walk out the back door.

“Samantha!” He shouts and catches up to me.

“Do we need a repeat of the conversation about how you are not my dad. Seriously, I’m fed up with being cooped up with you guys all lovey dovey! I don’t get a moments peace!” I shout.

“I’m trying to protect you!” He replies angrily.

“Do you see where we are? Craig hasn’t come back and there is no one else for miles! I don’t need protecting Shaun. Back off!” I push him away from me and run off as he grumbles, but stays put, leaving me alone.

I keep walking until I reach the local town, wandering around until I found the local diner.

“What can I get you sweetheart?” An elderly gentleman, who had to be in his seventies at least, he looked well-groomed with silver hair combed backwards in a smart shirt and darkened jeans, walks to my table with a note pad and pen, with a genuine smile.

“Coffee please” I smile back as he nods and turns back to the counter grabbing my drink.

“You’re new around here. I’ve never seen you before. We know everyone around here” He smiles placing my coffee down.

“Yeah, we came a week ago, staying in a place near the beach”

“That big mansion on the hill?” he asks as I nod.

“Business or pleasure?” He asks.

“Pleasure I guess, needed a break from life.” He nods.

“I get that, gets a little rough sometimes. You’re young, you need to enjoy life. Don’t let the rough days get you down. Anyway, I hope I will see you around some more, but I have to get on, diner’s not going to run itself and we are a person short” He says as he walks off briskly into the crowded diner.

I notice a sign by the till that said they were looking for two new waiters/waitresses and it made me think.

I was bored and needed to find out what I wanted in life. The boys hated me on my own and I knew Elise was dying to get out the house too.

“Hey, I saw the sign. You’re looking to take on two people?” I ask the lady at the counter.

“Oh, yeah honey, let me get the boss. Hey Harvey!” She shouts and the old guy comes back up to the counter.

“Did you need something else sweetheart?” He looks at me sweetly.

“The jobs… are you still taking interviews? My friend and I could do with getting out the house sometime, this place might just be what we need” I smile.

“You know what, come by tomorrow with your friend and we’ll have a chat” He smiles, and I shake his hand.

“Thank you!” I surprise him by giving him a quick hug before blushing.

“It’s no problem sweetheart. I better get back, see you tomorrow” He rushes off back into the throngs of the crowd.

For once, I was excited again.

“Elise!” I shout as I walk through the front door.

“In here!” she calls from the kitchen where she’s sat with a tub of ice cream, I grab a spoon and join her.

“I’m so bored…” She begins and I just grin at her.

“Well you might not be for long…” she looks at me like I was crazy.

“I walked into town today and found this diner. The guy that runs it, is a really nice old guy and he’s looking to take on two people. I got us an interview tomorrow” I smile as she jumps off the stool and rushes to my side hugging me.

“You are a genius!” She squeals.

“Who’s a genius?” Tom enters through the back door, covered in sweat.

“Me. Have you finally decided to grace us with your presence?” I sneer.

“I’ve been busy” He shrugs.

“Doing what?!”

“This is where I take my leave” Elise slinks out of the room.

“Why do you care?” He sighs grabbing a drink from the fridge, refusing to look at me.

“You’ve been avoiding me for the past week. Why?”

“I’m not…” He tries to argue.

“Bullshit! You haven’t said a word to me since that night with Craig!” I shout.

“Don’t Sam…” He sighs trying to leave the room as I grab his arm he stops to look at my hand.

“Why are you avoiding me…” I ask again.

“Fine, you want to know why…” He begins before walking quickly up to me and taking my lips in his, kissing me hard and quick before releasing me again quickly.

“That’s why” He said and left the room, storming past James that had just got home.

“What’s up dude?” James smiles before it turns into a frown as he notices me standing in shock while Tom vaults up the stairs and slams his door.

“Honey I’m home!” Brian walks into the house soon after while James is just stood there watching me for a reaction as I can’t move, frozen in shock.

“Brian, I think she’s frozen again” James murmurs at him as they stand side by side.

“He…He…he fucking kissed me” I stammer.

“Tom? That’s why he stormed off! He kissed you and left you alone…” James eyes kept darting to the stairs.

“I wondered how long it would take” Brian mumbled.

“What do you mean?” my eyes shoot towards him.

“You couldn’t see it? The guys been pining after you. He doesn’t want to scare you, he’s afraid if he touches you the wrong way and you’re not ready he will lose you” Brian takes a seat next to me.

“So, he kisses her and runs off… real clever” James says sarcastically.

“I don’t know what to do…” I groan with my head in my hands.

“How do you feel about him?” Brian asks, moving a hand from my face.

“I…I… I don’t know… But, I just want to go back to normal. How we were before the mess with Craig. We haven’t had a night all together in a week and its driving me crazy. I don’t know how I feel about him, I’m barely understanding myself right now…”

“How about I make sure that we have another beach party this weekend. With everyone. That’s a start” Brian hugs me and I nod.

“You should talk to him though Sam, he needs to know how you’re feeling about things too” James adds.

“I will, tomorrow, after Elise and I’s interview” I smile.

“You have interviews?” Brian and James said in unison.

“Yeah at the local diner” I smile.

“Harvey’s? The guys a legend in the town. Cooks up the best burgers in town. Helps out the kids and the elderly, he’s said to be a real good guy” Brian states.

“That’s the one”

“Nice choice. I’m sure Shaun won’t say no to you getting this one, especially if Elise is there too” They smile as they walk off to get changed out of their work gear.

“Good morning ladies, nice to see you again and this must be your friend. My name is Harvey” Harvey greets us in the diner, we had decided to get an early start.

“I’m Elise, Sam was talking to me about this place last night and she was right, this place is amazing, it really is an authentic, retro diner” She looks around to see the jukebox in the corner, the old tables. But all of it was pristine, clean and shining as if it were new.

“Why thank you girls, I like to run a tight ship, keep a healthy and happy business and the people flood in” He smiles as he offers us a seat in his office.

“That’s great. You have to trust your co-workers too right? Keep things in order. Get things done” I add.

“Of course, but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it at the same time. So, ladies, what are you looking for exactly? How long will you be gracing our lovely town?” He asks.

“About a year, happy to do any hours you need” I answer with a smile and Elise nods in agreement.

“What were you doing back home?” he asks.

“I worked for an insurance company and Sam here worked in security” Elise saved my ass coming up with a quick answer.

“Security? A pretty girl like you doesn’t look the type to be in security” He raises a brow.

“Family business” I answer as he nods.

“I respect that. Ok. How about we do a trial, you both work Mondays and Fridays and we see how we go from there?” He offers.

“You’ll do that? Straight away… You barely know anything about us…” I say shocked.

“I’ve heard a few things, I know that some of the boys in your mansion by the sea are working in a few local garages, the town talks. You’ve made quite the impression.” He grins.

“I…uh…” I stammer.

“Thank you.” Elise answers with a huge smile..

“No problem. I expect you both here at 8am sharp Monday. But enjoy your weekend” He smiles and leads us out.

“He is so nice” Elise smiles as we practically skip down the road.

“I know. Brian told me the other day he’s like the local friendly grandpa of the whole town. Everyone knows him and he knows everyone”

“I can’t wait for Monday, to have something to do and we get to work together!” She squeals.

We walk quickly back home to find everyone had got home early from work; they were already setting up the beach for the party that Brian had persuaded everyone we needed.

“We’re home!” Elise shouted as Shaun turned the corner from the kitchen, smiling at her as he brought her in for a kiss.

“Seriously, I’m getting fed up with all the sucking face” I groan as they laugh.

“So? How did it go?” Shaun asks, looking between us.

“We got it” she squeals.

“I had no doubts about it” he smiled and placed a kiss on both our heads.

“Let’s go get changed, I’m too hot in this shirt” Elise groans as she drags me up the stairs with her.

Elise found me yet another gorgeous sundress to change into with a pretty rose gold coloured bikini underneath.

We got down to the beach where the party had already started, we had planned to make it a whole day event, so there was plenty of food and drink.

“I hear congratulations are in order girls” My brother smiled hugging us both.

“Thanks” I smiled as finally it felt like a missing piece of me was falling into place.

“You are dancing tonight!” James ran up to me, twirling me around as Layla giggled at us.

“Fine, but I’m going to need a few more drinks first” I smile as he passes me my favourite, vodka and coke.

“Drink up and have fun” He smiles.

As we walked around talking to the others, they congratulated us on our jobs, I noticed that one person was still missing from the group.

“Where is he?” I mumble to myself.

“He’ll be here, come play with Layla and I” James whispers in my ear, hearing me mumble.

I go with him and we build sandcastles with Layla as the waves lap over our feet, splashing each other.

Someone turns the music on, and the fun begins.

“Sam” James taps me and nods towards the stairs as Tom was walking down. But he wasn’t on his own, a blonde girl hung to his arm, feeling his bicep.

“This is a joke…right?” I say looking at James as he looks between us in disbelief.

“Guy doesn’t deserve you” he grumbles stabbing his spade in the sand.

“Sam! Come dance with me!” Damien shouts as he grabs me off the ground and twirls me around.

I laugh as we dance together, dancing between Taylor and Damien was fun but I kept glancing towards Tom and the blonde he had stuck to his side.

“Go dance with James” Damien saw where I was looking, his eyebrows furrowed in thought.

“Why?” I ask.

“We are going to make Tom jealous” He smirks.

“Jealous? Of what? He’s made it clear he doesn’t want me.” I sigh.

“You’re joking. The guy hasn’t stopped watching you all evening” Taylor added.

“James! Come dance!” Damien calls him over as he jumps up excitedly towards us.

“You did promise me a dance” He smiles as he takes my hand as Damien rushes to the speakers and changes the song to a slow song.

“Seriously” I groan, James takes one hand and places his other on my hip, leading us in a slow dance as the other couples also dance around us, even Layla was slow dancing with her uncle which made me chuckle.

“He’s so jealous right now” James smirks as he slowly turns us so I can see Tom’s face.

His eyes looked enraged, he’d stopped dancing and sat with the bimbo on his lap. She was fighting for his attention and he was ignoring her.

“You know what would piss him off right now?” James asked as I looked at him confused.

“What are you talking about?” I ask.

“If we kissed”

“Not a chance” I laughed out loud as he said it.

“Was only a suggestion” He shrugged playfully.

“You’re like a brother, that would be gross!” I said.

“You kissed Brian!” He fired back.

“I…Uh… yeah… that happened… but it was because the police turned up and he was a wanted man”

“You still did it…” he grumbled.

“Hold up, do you want to kiss me?” I ask in shock. His face goes red.

“Maybe” He says.

“Fine, do it then” I smirk egging him on.

He slowly leans forward and kisses me softly on the lips for a second.

“No! Brian was right! Like kissing my sister! Gross!” He wipes his mouth on his sleeve as I fall to the ground laughing tearing up in laughter, he just stood over me wiping his mouth.

“I told you!” Brian said from the barbeque laughing, having seen the event.

I looked towards Tom and he looked pissed. The blonde was gone, walking off along the beach angrily.

“Go get your guy Sam” James urged as he helped me up, wiping the tears from my smiling face.

By the time I turned again he had disappeared.

“Where the hell did he go?” I ask my eyes scouring the beach.

“Up there” Taylor said nodding up the stairs as I saw him taking two steps at a time.

I ran up them, but he reached the house before me as I ran into the house and found him standing by the breakfast bar sipping on his beer.

“Why’d you leave the party?” I ask as he turns away from me.

“Not in the mood” He snaps.

“Blonde not the one for you?” I toy with him.

“Go play with James” He growls.

“Seriously, did you not see the bit where he wiped his mouth and said it was gross!” I smirk, but he still wouldn’t turn towards me.

“Look, if you want to go kissing every guy around then I’m not sticking around to watch” He snaps again.

“Says the guy who brought a girl hanging onto him like she wanted to tear your shirt off” I growl back.

“I…She…She meant nothing” He murmurs taking another gulp of his beer.

“Will you fucking look at me Tom!” I shout.

“Go back to the party princess” He says as he begins to walk off.

“Don’t go, please” I cry. “Tom, I don’t know how to do this, I’ve only ever loved one man and I got barely any time with him. I don’t know how to deal with any of this…” I whimper as he stands in the doorway, fists clenching.

“Were you scared of me when I kissed you?” he asks

“No…” I answer, he turns to me.

“Are you scared of my touch?” he says coming closer to me as he hovers his hand over the skin of my face, not quite touching.

“No” I answer again.

“Are you scared to love me?” He asks as he looks deep into my eyes.

“Yes” I say honestly.

“Will you give me a chance to win your heart?”

My heart skips a beat as his hand strokes against my face, I close my eyes to the touch.

“Yes” I answer as I feel his lips against mine as they tingle when he releases them, taking a step back from me.

“I hope that was ok princess” he smiles unsure, afraid I might break.

“It was more than ok. It was perfect” I blush.

“How about we go back to the party?” He asks and I nod.

“Yes, lets” I smile.

“Can I… Can I hold your hand?” He asks.

“Are you really asking me that? Just take it fool” I smirk, placing my hand in his as we left the house and walked down the stairs towards the beach.

“Auntie Sammy! Why are you holding his hand? He was with that icky lady!” Layla bounced up to us.

“Let me tell you a secret” Tom bent down to Layla and whispered in her ear.

She giggled and bounced off towards Rob and Tammy.

“What did you say?” I laugh as I catch Damien winking at me from the other side of the beach as he gets Taylors attention, their smirks making me blush at our hands still embracing.

“I told her that you were a beautiful princess who had a knack for running away from me, so I’m holding your hand, to keep you near me” he smiled cheekily.

I smiled at him and led him to the drinks where I poured myself another and we joined back in with the party. His hand barely left mine.

“I want to play a game!” James shouts out randomly, obviously drunk as he stumbles across the sand.

“What do you want to play?” I laugh at him.

“Truth or dare” he smirks.

“How old are you? Twelve?” Taylor laughs.

“I think it’s a fun idea” Savannah pipes up.

“Fine, but we should take this back in the house, Layla needs to get to bed” Rob says as we all agree and clear up quickly and head back up.

“I don’t want to go to bed!” Layla stomps angrily.

“Layla, want me to come put you to bed?” I ask and she nods happily.

“Thank you Sam, you’re a life saver” Tammy sighs as I take Layla by the hand and lead her to her room.

“Go get changed into your nightdress” I shoo her to her room as she giggles happily.

“Auntie Sammy?” She says as I wait for her on her bed.

“Yes Layla?”

“You let go of Tom’s hand… You won’t run away will you?” She looks at me concerned.

“I’m not going anywhere.” I smile as she jumps into bed and I tuck her in.

“Do you like him? Like Wayne likes my mummy”

“What?” I ask in shock.

“I saw mummy and Wayne kissing. I didn’t mean too! I was playing with Uncle Rob and I wanted to see mummy and I ran off and they were kissing!” She says quickly.

“Well, I don’t know how your mummy and Wayne feel about each other but what I do know is how I feel about Tom, can you keep a secret?” I ask

“I can, I can, I can” She says excitedly.

“I think I’m falling in love with him” I smile as her eyes widen and she grins.

“Good! He’s a nice man, you’ll live happily ever after, he calls you princess! You’ll be his queen!” She giggles as I tuck her back into bed, stroking her hair.

“Yes, but this is our secret for now ok?” I say and she nods, I kiss her head and smile, waiting until she drifts off before I walk out the room and back down the stairs.
