Chapter 6

2 months later...

I can’t believe it, but I do believe Charlie has been tamed. She and Jake are moving in together. I am so happy for her; she deserves to be happy, and Jake is a great guy. I finally told Curtis I loved him and we are talking about our future together, for the first time in forever I let someone in, no longer closed off, I took a leap and it’s paying off.

Or so I thought?

Last week Curtis sat me down and said it wasn’t working and he wanted to break up it was so out of the blue, he broke my heart; I felt such a fool; hiding away, only leaving my house for work. I couldn’t even face Mark, instead, I just said I was busy and texted him every once in a while. Hearing a knock at my door and answer it, Charlie comes storming into my house and tells me to put a nice outfit on we were going out I know she is on a mission and even if I put up a fight, I won’t win. Charlie does my hair and makeup and tells me the best way to get over any man, is to show him what he is missing and that they aren’t worth your tears.

Charlie looks at me as I hold my empty glass, she smiles. “Same again?”

I nod and smile back. “Yes please chick, do you want to go get some food after?”

Charlie looks back at me with a big grin on her face.

“It’s like you’re reading my mind.” I make my way to the ladies as I nearly reach the door, I turn around and I see Curtis. I have to do a double-take when I see the same girl from a few months back, they are in a booth sitting across from each other, they are holding hands, As I stand frozen watching their interaction he removes his hands and rubs them through his hair.

Charlie is looking at me wondering why I am not moving, I shake my head and start moving towards Curtis, he finally sees me and his face pales. Guilt all over his face. Acting on impulse, I grab the drink on his table and empty the contents over him. I lose control and scream at him.

I try to walk off but Curtis grabs me turning me towards him. “Please, nothing happened while we were together that’s why I broke it off I, swear.”

I scoff at him “Good for you, not cheating on me, I’m guessing some of those late nights at work, weren’t exactly work? fuck you, fuck her, fuck everything.”

Curtis lowers his head. “I love her.”

I yank my arm back, “You love her, you told me you loved me just last week before you broke my heart.”

Curtis shakes his head. “You don’t understand we were together for five years I couldn’t just switch off my feelings.”

I feel the tears sting the corners of my eyes. “What about your feelings for me?”

I storm over to where Charlotte is sitting and confront her. “You realise that just last week when he was in my bed with me, he was telling me how much he loved me and he was making plans for our future. Well played, you won him back, good luck to the both of you.”

Looking Curtis over with a look of contempt, I point at him. “You’re a fickle little prick!”

He tries to grab my arm but is yanked away. “I think you have done enough damage I suggest you and her leave, NOW! or I will have you both escorted off these premises” I can’t quite believe my eyes considering they are filled with tears. Charlie hands me a tissue as I wipe the tears away before my vision clears. I know that guy, I recognise him from all the face time chats with Mark.

Marcus gives me a big smile and pulls me in for a hug.

“Hello little lady causing quite the scene in my bar, is this your usual thing?” I push him back, taking him all in. “Marcus, I am so sorry!”

Marcus waves his hand at both me and Charlie. “Come on, follow me.” He leads Charlie and me upstairs into a private lounge area. As I look around, I see Curtis and Charlotte having words while grabbing their things to leave. Yeah, fuck you both, hope I ruined your night you twat. Marcus points to the bar before asking.

“Can I interest you girls, in some drinks?” Charlie smiles at him and points at the top shelf.

“Make it the strongest thing you have available. It has been an eventful week for this one.” Marcus gives me the biggest grin. “I can honestly say it is a delight finally meeting you in person. Mark is going to die off when he finds out I have met his Blake.”

Marcus is funny and handsome not my type, but we have been chatting for ages turns out he is in London as he has purchased a few properties and wanted to see how they were doing he is here for a few days and then back to New York. Jake came over and picked Charlie up. He offered to take me home, but I wasn’t really up for being alone and Marcus promised to get me home safe. Jake apologised for helping set me up with Curtis, it wasn’t his fault he wasn’t to know he would shatter my heart into a million pieces.

Marcus goes to get us more drinks as he comes back, he is talking on the phone. “I can always ask to see what she says, I am looking right at her, hold on, let me face time you.” Marcus leans over to me. “There is someone who wants to see you, he doesn’t quite believe me.” He turns the screen and shows me a familiar face Mark smiles at me.

“Hello, Blake” I smile back suddenly I am overwhelmed by emotions and a tear slides down my cheek. “Hi, Mark” he bolts up.

“He wasn’t bullshitting”

I gently laugh at his shock. “No, he wasn’t. Trust me, I am as surprised as you.” I quickly wipe away the tears and Mark looks with worry.

“Are you ok Blake? Marcus wouldn’t go into details but said you are having a shit time.”

I try to find the words but struggle. “I don’t know what to say?”

Mark gets straight to the point. “Is this about why you pretty much ditched me last week?”

I shrug my shoulders and then nod my head. “Yeah,”

I tell him everything about last week and then the finale that was tonight; he is so angry.

“Fuck sake Blake, why didn’t you tell me?”

I try to stop crying as I explain to Mark. “I didn’t want to admit it, I thought he would come back to me!” Mark tries to get me to calm down and then shocks me to my core when he says something I never saw coming. “Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but how would you feel about coming to New York for a break?”

My mouth falls open and the words just shout out, “You’re shitting me, right?” Mark shakes his head.

“Nope, not at all!” I have a million things going round in my head, getting the time off work, getting flights, where I would say I am snapped from my thoughts when I hear Marcus beside me.

“Look, I have a hotel in New York you can stay there for free and just take a break from here. I can even cover the cost of your flights!” Standing up, I pace back and forth.

“I can’t ask you to do that.”

Marcus gently puts his hands on my shoulders to stop me from wearing a hole in his carpet.

“You’re not asking I’m offering, look I will not be a dick about it but I’m mega-rich. Not that big a deal and Mark is one of my best friends, I am sure he would love to finally meet you in person.”

I then pick up the phone that I accidentally dropped in my manic pacing Mark gives me a little pout

“Come on Blake, we would love to have you over for a while, you could do with a breakaway.”

Thinking about it for a minute, “Well, I have holidays to take, let me talk to my boss and get back to you.” I laugh when I hear Mark say to Marcus. “don’t take no for an answer. I expect dates and flights to be booked before you come back to New York.” Marcus nods, typing something on another techy thingamajig.

“Already on it, Mark!”

Something is going on with Blake and she isn’t telling me, she has started to shut me out; I have tried calling her but she just texts back that she’s fine just busy and she will get back to me. I am on-site looking over the draft plans and organising my construction team on the strict deadlines we have to meet.

“Alright, that’s everything thanks guys promise once the job is done, a night out is on me.” My phone rings and I accept the call.

“Marcus, how’re things?”

Marcus laughs, “Real good, I am actually in London right now and you will not believe who I have the pleasure of spending time with?”

I just want him to get to the point. “Who?”

Marcus pauses before he delivers his blow. “Your Blake”

I call bullshit at him. “Fuck off, you’re lying!”

Marcus’ tone completely changes “Mate, I shit you not, I’m getting her a well-deserved drink, Mark she’s not good, that dick did a number on her, she’s not in a good place right now” I feel my blood boil I knew it was just a matter of time. “What did he do?”

Marcus goes quiet. “It’s not my story to tell man, but she’s pretty cut up.”

Needing to see her and not willing to let her ignore me a moment longer. “Can you put her on for me, she’s been avoiding me!”

Marcus can hear my desperate plea’s. “I can always ask to see what she says,” I plead just one more time.

“Please, for me. Where is she?”

Marcus raises his voice. “I am looking right at her”

I wait as the video call connects, and I finally see her. “Hello, Blake” I see her eyes well with tears and a few escaping down her cheek.

“Hi Mark.”

Seeing her face is heartbreaking, her eyes are puffy and red. I try to lighten the mood.

“Has he been looking after you?”

Blake laughs. “Marcus has been an amazing host.”

Blake finally opens up and tells me what happened last week and then what just happened today. Just wanting to give her a big hug. She has a heart of gold and deserves to be treated with love and respect. I have a crazy idea, but I know she will say no. I have to ask her.

“Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but how would you feel about coming to New York for a break?”

At first, she is hesitant, but between Marcus and me, we finally wear her down. I end the call telling Marcus to look after her and to make sure she promises to come to New York. Time away from London and a change of scenery are exactly what she needs to mend her broken heart.

Marcus got everything sorted and Blake will be arriving soon, I am so excited to see her. I am taking a few days off work so I can show her around the city and spend some time with her. I am sitting in my office clearing some things up when there is a knock at the door.

“Come in.” I hear the door open and my heart stops when I see who is standing in the doorway I ask harshly.

“Why are you here?”

I watch as the woman who broke my heart moves closer to me.

“We need to talk?”

I look down at her, seeing the swell of her tummy.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea and by the looks of things congratulations.”

Why the fuck is my Ex, standing in front of me it has been months and now suddenly she is standing in front of me. Guess she and Justin didn’t waste any time considering the size of the bump she has. My ex looks at me with a smile as she rubs her bump.

“Thank you, yeah, I’m eight months pregnant.” I raise my eyebrows, needing this encounter to be over.

“Well, like I said, congratulations to you and Justin” She looks at me and says my name and I feel nothing.

“Mark...” she pauses before dropping a bombshell on me.

“It may be your baby.” I look at her and start laughing “Yeah right Blake.” She shakes her head and then looks me dead in the eye. “No, I am serious, I was with both you and Justin around the same time.”

The anger levels rise to a peak in my body as I yell out to her.

“You’re only telling me this now, are you serious?” Blake cries.

“I am so sorry I never meant for any of this.” I rub my hands down my face asking her.

“How? We were always safe.”

Blake rubs her belly, turning her attention back to me.

“I was a little stressed with the wedding and I was a little late at taking my pill.” I feel my legs begin to bounce up and down as I take the news in.

“I can’t believe what I am hearing.”

I’m stunned. This is a complete mess right now. Blake comes closer to me I can feel her hand on my arm. “I know this is a lot to take in.” I swipe my arm away, not wanting her near me. “No, you don’t, you walked out on me 8 months ago, a few weeks before our wedding, you fucked my best friend! Does he know?”

Blake nods and in a hushed tone tells me. “Justin and I aren’t together right now, I only told him a few days ago that I wasn’t sure of the paternity.” I pinch the bridge of my nose. “Did you let Justin think all this time that the baby was his?” Blake’s agitation grows and she becomes defensive “I didn’t do it intentionally, I was scared, I can’t do this alone.”

I stand up raking my hands through my hair looking at her.

“Are you fucking shitting me! I can’t do this right now I need you to leave.” Blake comes closer to me before stalling she can see the anger radiate from me.

“I am so sorry, Mark.”

Blake walks out of the office leaving me shell-shocked, I could be a dad with my ex’s baby. I am staring out the window. Why me? Have I not dealt with enough from her. Now I have this to add to the shit list. I’m lost in thought when I faintly hear Nicole.

“Hey sweetie, I have been trying to call you, Mark?... MARK!”

I turn around and find Nicole staring at me as I bow my head apologetically.

“Sorry, what did you say?” Nicole walks over to me, cupping my face with her hands.

“Is everything alright honey?”

I shake my head and pull away. “Nicole, I don’t know how to tell you this.” Nicole crosses her arms over her chest. “Tell me what?”

I can’t keep this from her, so I tell her straight to the point.

“Blake is eight months pregnant and ... it might be mine.”
