Chapter Twenty-Five

Adrien’s POV

Asher wasn’t at school for the rest of the week. After his overnight stay at the hospital, it was arranged that Asher would move into Daniel’s place. Daniel and his mother had talked about the arrangement with the police when they were there, seeing as they were the closest thing to family that Asher had. He didn’t have anyone else. And because Asher was pregnant, it was the best option.

It was currently second period, and because I had a spare period, I was at Daniel’s house visiting Asher. We were sitting in the living room together watching Netflix. Asher was curled up in the corner of the L-shaped couch. He wore black maternity shorts and an oversized band shirt. He sat with a fluffy blanket wrapped around himself as he glued his eyes to the anime we were watching on screen—Violet Evergarden.

Asher seemed to be doing okay this past week despite what happened, though, he has been a little more on the quiet side. Asher was normally very talkative, and he still was, but not to the extent that he usually was.

“Hey sweethearts, it’s going to be lunchtime soon. Did you want me to make anything in particular? Or perhaps I could order a pizza?” Mrs. Blake asked as she wandered over from the kitchen. Daniel told me that his mom had taken the week off from work so she could keep an eye on Asher while Daniel and his dama weren’t home. I flashed her a soft smile, before turning my gaze to Asher.

“What do you want, Asher?” I asked him. Asher bit his lip in thought, pulling the blankets up higher.

“Uhm...I’m kind of craving a pizza.”

“Alright! Pizza it is! I will order it right now!” Mrs. Blake smiled sweetly. Then, she disappeared off into the kitchen.

“Daniel told me you had your OB appointment this morning. How did that go?” I brought my attention back to Asher. He paused before he released a heavy breath, and sat up straighter on the couch, leaning his back against the couch as he crossed his legs.

“It was fine, the same as all of my other appointments really. The baby’s healthy and thriving as they should be,” Asher replied. I smiled at that.

“Well, that’s good. Always nice to hear that your baby is doing well.”

“Mhmmm,” He hummed. He went quiet for a moment, lowering his gaze as he rested his hand over his stomach, “but anyway! Enough about me. What’s been going on with you lately? Anything interesting?”

I leaned back against the couch and crossed my legs, “Uhm...not really? Well, besides the fact that Carter has been coming to my locker pretty much every day to talk to me. He does it when Preston isn’t there.”

Asher pinches his brows together, “Carter? As in, Carter Alinsky? From the rugby team?”

“Yea,” I nodded, tugging at the sleeves of my hoodie, “I don’t know why, but...what am I supposed to say?”

“Well...if I were you, I’d tell him to fuck off. He’s known for being a douche. The entire rugby team are assholes and he is top tier asshole, so you should stay away. Does Preston know?”

“I guess...and no, he doesn’t know.”

Asher frowned at me, “you haven’t told him?”

“Yea...I haven’t told him yet. I’ll probably tell him later today after school. But it’s not that big of a deal anyway,” I said, shaking my head. Asher stared at me for a long moment, pausing before he nodded his head.

“I guess so. But like I said, Carter is a fucking asshole from what I heard, so just be careful.”

“I will,” I nodded with a smile. Asher returned the smile. We went back to watching the anime on the screen. Twenty minutes later the doorbell was ringing, and soon, Daniel’s mom was bringing over the box of pizza, setting it onto the coffee table in front of us along with two bottles of water.

“Oh, fucking finally! I’m starving,” Asher groaned. He immediately dug in and grabbed a pizza slice, shoving it into his mouth. I laughed at him, Mrs. Blake watching Asher with an amused grin.

“Careful, if you eat the whole thing at once you’ll end up choking,” She laughed. Asher scoffed at that.

“Well I mean...if you can tell my baby to quit eating all the food I put in my body and starve me, that would be great.”

Mrs. Blake smirked, “children born into this family are big eaters. This is just practice before the baby’s born.”

Asher and I laughed. Daniel’s mom smiled and kissed his forehead before she grabbed two slices of pizza from the box and walked off down the hallway. I watched her go, before I grabbed my own slice of pizza, Asher and I getting comfy once again on the couch as we ate our pizza, and watched TV for the remainder of the time.

After spending my spare and lunch hour with Asher at Daniel’s place, I headed back to school in time for third period. There were five minutes until the bell by the time I got back to school, so I headed up the main staircase to the second floor and headed to my locker. It was nice, mostly because the second floor was pretty quiet, minus the few students that were stopping at their lockers.

On my way to my locker, I got a quick text from Preston, letting me know that he would be a few minutes late to meet me at our lockers seeing as he was finishing up a workout. He always liked to meet me in between classes to walk me to my next class, which I always found endearing. I smiled to myself and texted him back, replying that it was alright and that I would wait for him.

And speaking of my love, Preston and I were going to be going on a dinner date later tonight, and I was pretty excited. We haven’t gone on a date in a little while, so I couldn’t wait for school to be over. It was one of those days where it seems to go by so slow, merely because I was excited to go out and hang out with my boyfriend for a few hours by ourselves and enjoy each other’s company. Going on a date with Preston was my favourite thing to do, just because they were always so fun and had my heart feeling full and satisfied every time.

When I reached my locker, I put in my lock code. I shrugged off my winter coat and hung it up in my locker, replacing my winter boots with the pair of converse that I kept in my locker. But just as I was grabbing my binder and textbooks and putting them into my bag, I was interrupted when someone approached my locker.

“Hey, Adrien,” Carter smiled charmingly at me. I fought the urge to roll my eyes. This past week when Preston wasn’t around, he had been stopping at my locker almost every day. It was getting annoying and uncomfortable, but I didn’t want to be rude, nor did I know how to politely tell him to leave, so I didn’t say anything about it.

“Are you going to keep stopping at my locker every time I’m here?” I glanced up at him. He kept a smile, resting his arm against Preston’s locker as he leaned against it.

“What’s wrong with me wanting to say hi to a beauty such as yourself?” He tilted his head. A blush painted my cheeks. I released a breath, biting my lip as I tucked my pencil case into my bag.

“I told you, Carter, that I have a boyfriend.”

He raised a brow, “so? It doesn’t mean I can’t compliment you. Friends compliment each other all the time.”

“...Seriously? Friends?” I looked at him confusedly. Carter nodded.

“Of course. I realized how rude I was the first time I came to talk to you. I thought that I could make it up to you and be friends.”

I furrowed my brows at him. I took in his facial features, trying to find some hint of humour, wondering if he was just messing with me or something, but I couldn’t read the expression on his face. I mean...I guess he looked sincere enough? I wasn’t sure. It was probably just my insecurities getting the best of me. Maybe he was genuinely trying to be nice?

“Oh, uh...yeah. I guess we could be friends,” I flashed him a light smile. Carter perked up at my answer, a smirk tugging at his lips.

“Yea? Sweet.”

The bell for third period rang, the halls quickly becoming crowded. I shut my locker and zipped up my bag, shrugging my bag over my shoulder.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I quickly snapped my gaze over to Preston as he eyeballed Carter with narrowed eyes, his bag shrugged over his shoulder, damp hair slicked back from his face. He looked tense. I bit my lip as I looked between the two of them.

“Why I’m just chatting with my good friend Adrien here,” Carter smiled at Preston, “did you have a nice workout?”

Preston scoffed, “It was fine. And you’re not his friend. That’s my locker you’re standing in front of, so you should move.”

Carter whistled, “I should be getting to class anyways,” he chuckled at Preston. Then, he turned to me and flashed me one last smile, “I’ll see you another time.”

With a final clasp against Preston’s back, Carter made his way down the hall through the crowd, and out of sight. I watched him go, before I turned back to Preston, flashing him a soft smile.

“Let’s go then, I don’t want to be late,” I said to Preston. I went to grab his hand, only to frown when he pulled his hand away from me and crossed his arms against his chest.

He cut me off, “Why the hell are you talking to Carter? And how long have you been talking to him?”

“I—it wasn’t my intention to talk to him, he just randomly started coming up to me whenever I stopped at my locker—”

“How long?”

“O-only a week. But—”

“Stop talking to him, Adrien. I mean it, he’s an asshole,” Preston said to me, practically demanded as he opened his locker to shove his gym clothes away. I frowned at the way he aggressively grabbed his biology textbook and shoved it into his bag.

“Seriously? He’s not that horrible. Sure, it’s been a bit annoying to have him come up to me every day, but—”

Preston cut me off a second time, slamming his locker shut, “No, you’re not allowed to talk to him.”

I furrowed my brows at him, confused by his sudden behaviour, “excuse me? You don’t get to tell me who I can or can’t talk to.”

“Carter is literally an asshole, and he’s manipulative. You seriously want to be friends with him?” Preston scoffed, “no. He’s probably just being nice to you because you’re my boyfriend and he wants to make me mad. That, or he wants to get into your pants. Or maybe both.”

“Or you just don’t want me to be friends with other Kings. Is that it?” I snapped at him. Preston paused at that. Just before he could say something, the second bell rang for class. Preston shook his head and shrugged his bag over his shoulder.

“You know what? You can walk to class yourself,” Preston snapped back at me. My eyes widened, and before I could say something, Preston had his back turned to me as he walked down the hallway.

I watched him go, and as he disappeared out of sight, I couldn’t help the shock that chilled my bones by his sudden anger, my heart aching in my chest.
