Chapter Twenty-Seven

Adrien’s POV

The walk back home was silent. The entire walk from the school to our place in the cold weather, we didn’t say a word. I knew it was because we had an argument earlier, but I just wished he talked to me. It felt weird walking home together without saying a single word to each other because usually, we were talking and laughing up a storm.

I frowned. Maybe if I just told Carter to leave me alone the first time he came up to me, this never would have happened. Preston would have never gotten mad at me, and we wouldn’t be arguing right now. He would have walked me to class, and he would talk to me on our walk home. It was my fault that he was mad at me and I didn’t like it.

When we got home, Preston unlocked the front door and we stepped inside. We were greeted by a barking Kodey and a silent house, all of the lights off, though the open windows kept the house bright. I watched as Preston knelt down and ruffled Kodey’s fur. I smiled gently at the interaction, but then my smile faded and I started taking off my boots, scarf, and coat.

“I’m going upstairs,” I sighed heavily. I hung up my coat before I grabbed my bag and headed to the stairs. Preston stood up from his kneeling position on the ground, his gaze moving towards me.

“Yea, sure.”

I headed upstairs to our bedroom. I turned on the light, smiling softly when I noticed both my cats, Ruby and Shelby, fast asleep on the bed, curled up next to the pillows. I closed the door, walked over to the bed, and laid down with them. Ruby lifted her head as I laid down, her sleepy eyes looking in my direction. She yawned, stretched her front paws, and got up to move closer to me, only to lay back down, curled up against me.

My heart swelled. I pet her head, rubbed her ears, and ran my fingers through her fur, making her purr in response. Ruby has always been close to me, ever since I was a child. When I first saw her as a kitten, I begged my mom to take her home, and it didn’t take much effort because my mom couldn’t help it either. Ruby was adorable and it was hard to resist her.

And now, here we were. She was getting older now, creeping up to thirteen years, but I loved her. Her and Shelby both. They always seemed to be there when I was upset just to comfort me, and it always made me feel better to lay with them and pet them for a few hours, just by myself.

I was about to close my eyes when the door opened, and when I looked over, I saw Preston standing there.

“Hey...can we talk?” He stepped into the bedroom, softly closing the door behind him.

“Uh...yea, sure,” I nodded. I bit my lip, careful not to disturb Ruby as I sat up on the bed, swinging my legs off the bed. Preston stopped once he was standing in front of me, leaning his hip against the dresser as he crossed his arms.

I watched him quietly. For a brief moment, he looked as if he was thinking about something. Then, he released a heavy sigh.

“Look...I’m sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t mean to yell, nor did I intend to tell you what to do. I just...wanted to warn you about Carter. He pisses me off, he truly does, and I don’t like that he’s been talking to you.”

I bit my lip at his apology. He was looking at me with a sincere look in his gaze, so I knew that he really meant it. I looked at him for a long moment, before releasing a heavy breath, and stood up from the bed.

“It’s okay, I appreciate your apology. And I’m sorry for not saying anything, but I didn’t think it was necessary cause it wasn’t like he was hitting on me or anything. He was just being nice,” I said to him, “I don’t like Carter, but you’ve never mentioned what he’s done to make you not like him, and he’s been nothing but nice to me so I don’t see a reason for me to be rude to him.”

Preston licked his lips. He looked tense at my words, but he nodded his head nonetheless, “Carter is just...he uses people. He has a reputation for taking queens to bed, and he isn’t nice about it either. I just don’t want him to be around you because I don’t want him to hurt you that way. And the fact that he suddenly started talking to you now? It makes me suspicious as to what he’s up to.”

“Suspicious? ...So someone being nice to me and wanting to be friends with me is suspicious behaviour?” I frowned at him. Preston sighed heavily at that.

“I know Carter. He’s just being nice to you because he wants to fuck you.”

I furrowed my brows at him, feeling uncomfortable by Preston’s bluntness, “so basically you’re just saying I can’t be friends with him because he wants to fuck, as if I’m going to do it with him.”

“I know you would never do that. But—”

“But what? You’re still friends with all of your past one night stands, and I haven’t said anything about it, because I trust you. You make it sound like every king I end up being friends with will want something from me. You’re my boyfriend. You’re the only person I have sex with and the ONLY person I want to have sex with. I’ve only ever been attracted and comfortable with you. I’ve never felt an attraction before until you. I would never do it with Carter, he’s just a friend.”

Preston sighed at that. He pushed off the dresser and stepped closer, stopping once he was standing right in front of me. I looked up at him, biting my lip as he reached up to cup my face with both hands.

“I don’t mind if you have other king friends, just not Carter. I just don’t trust him. I’m not trying to make it sound like you can’t have other friends, because you can and I encourage you to have other friends, just not Carter,” He said gently, his pale blue eyes boring into mine. I stared at him for a long moment before I nodded my head, releasing a heavy sigh.

“Okay, I won’t talk to him anymore.”

Preston smiled gently, “good. Can we put this behind us now? I’d rather not argue with you anymore, I don’t like it when we fight.”

“Mhmm...I agree,” I returned the smile, “I forgive you.”

Preston hummed, bringing my face closer as he pressed a kiss to my lips. I kissed him back, wrapping my arms around his neck.

“Mmm...can’t wait till after our date tonight. I’m going to love you so hard,” Preston murmured against my lips, “it’s been too long.”

“It’s only been a week,” I laughed, looking up at him amusedly. Preston scoffed at that, sliding his hands lower to grip my waist.

“Yea...too long.”

I rolled my eyes at that, looking up at him with a cheeky grin. I kissed his cheek and pulled back from him, patting at his chest, “you and your insatiable libido.”

“Well...what can I say? You’re hot,” Preston smirked.

I pinched his chest, a heavy blush coating my cheeks. Preston swatted at my hand and laughed, and then, he pulled me towards the bed, the two of us flopping on top of it.

Preston’s POV

When we stepped into the restaurant, the savoury smell of high-quality food filled my nose. The atmosphere was filled with loud chatter and clanging glasses, waiters and waitresses passing by tables handing out food. It brought a smile to my face. Adrien and I haven’t been on a date in a while since we had been busy with other stuff going on in our lives, so I was excited to finally spend the night with him, just us two. Dinner and a movie were exactly what we needed.

“Mm, just walking in here is making me hungry. It smells so good,” Adrien groaned from beside me. I looked down at him with a cheeky smile. He was looking around the restaurant in curiosity, his hand tangled with mine.

“Yea, I’m hungry too. From what Phoebe told me, this restaurant has amazing food and just thinking about it makes me impatient,” I laughed. Adrien smiled, wrapped his arms around mine and rested his head against my shoulder.

When it was our turn, we walked up to the hostess podium and asked for a table for two, and it didn’t take long before we were escorted to a table in the corner of the restaurant. When we were seated, shrugged off our coats, and handed menus, we were greeted by a waitress. She took our drink orders before she smiled and walked off.

“What do you think you’re going to get?” I looked up from my menu and across the table at Adrien. He was busy looking through his own menu, flipping through a variety of options. He looked beautiful in the pink, short-sleeved button-up shirt he was wearing, tucked into a pair of high-waisted jeans. He always managed to look good, and every time I laid eyes on the necklace he wore around his neck, the one I gave him, it brought a smile to my face. I wanted to lean over the table and kiss him.

“Mmm...I don’t know yet. I might just get a pizza and some fries,” Adrien said, lifting his gaze from the menu and to me, “what about you?”

“The steak sandwich looks good, so I’m going to get that,” I replied. I leaned my head against my hand and looked at Adrien fondly, “though...nothing is ever as good as you.”

A heavy blush coated Adrien’s cheeks, “are you seriously comparing me to food?”

“More like comparing you to the fact I can’t ever get enough of you, just like I can’t get enough of food,” I smirked, “I have large appetites for both.”

Adrien rolled his eyes at that, “you’re a goof.”

I laughed. Our waitress whose name was Alexa, eventually came back to our table with our drinks, setting them down in front of us. Then, she took our food orders. Adrien ordered two slices of pizza and a side of fries like he had said, and I ordered the steak sandwich with a side of fries. Once she wrote our orders down, she smiled at us and walked off.

The rest of the dinner was amazing. Adrien and I talked for a long while, and every time I saw him smile or laugh, it made my heart sore. When our food came, we ate in comfortable silence, with an occasional conversation. Even if we didn’t say anything at all, I’ve known him long enough that the silence isn’t awkward. It was peaceful and relaxing. Just having his presence around me put me at ease. Also, the food was fucking amazing. I was glad we chose this restaurant to eat at. I would definitely take him here again or come here with our friends.

Once we finished our food, I paid for our bill before we shrugged on our coats. I took Adrien’s hand in mine as we exited the restaurant and headed towards our parked car—well, it was his mom’s car we took. We didn’t bother with dessert seeing as we would now be heading to the cinema to see a movie, and we’d most likely be ordering popcorn and junk food.

When we arrived at the cinema, we purchased our tickets, ordered one large bag of popcorn, and a variety of candy. When we headed into the theatre, the darkroom wasn’t too crowded with people, though there were a few couples sitting around. I mean, we were seeing a romance film after all. I followed Adrien up the stairs and we sat in the back of the theatre as we usually did, and we sat down in the vacant seats.

“I hope you don’t start crying during the movie,” I smirked at Adrien. I sat next to him with the bag of popcorn on my lap, casually snacking on it. Adrien scoffed at me as he opened his bag of skittles, and popped a few into his mouth.

“You wish.”

I laughed and leaned over to kiss his cheek, then his lips softly. Adrien smiled at that, a blush staining his cheeks in the dark cinema. Then, all chatter in the theatre died down as the movie started.

I wasn’t a big fan of romance movies, but I knew Adrien was. So while he was busy watching the movie while snacking on his candy, I snuck a few glances his way. I paid more attention to him and his cuteness rather than the movie, though, the movie was good too when I bothered to pay attention.

I smiled to myself. I reached my hand over and took Adrien’s hand in mine, tangling our fingers together. Adrien turned his gaze to me when I lifted his hand and pressed a kiss to the top of his hand, and flashed him a loving smile.

“I love you,” I whispered to him in the back of the dark theatre. Adrien’s gaze softened, a fond look in his eyes before he returned a smile, his hand squeezing mine.

“I love you too...” He whispered back. I grinned, leaned over and kissed the corner of his lips, and then, I turned my gaze back to the movie, our hands still tangled together.
