Chapter Thirty-Four

Adrien's POV

"You're so fucking beautiful."

I looked over at Preston, a blush coating my cheeks when I realized that he was staring at me. A warm smile painted his face, one that had my heart doing flip flops in my chest.

"Are you just going to keep staring at me?" I asked him, raising my eyebrow at him.

"Why not? You're cute."

I rolled my eyes at him, but I couldn't help but return the smile, my teeth biting into my lower lip. We were lying side by side on the bed, our textbooks and study notes scattered around us on the bed. We had been doing homework for the last couple of hours before we decided to take a break, and now, we were just laying against the bed in silence, doing nothing except relaxing in the comfortable presence of each other.

"And you're a dork."

"I'm your dork," Preston replied cheekily. I laughed, rolling over so that I could press a kiss to Preston's cheek, to which he returned by kissing me on the lips softly.

"We should probably get up soon. Kourtney and Phoebe are going to be here to get ready for the party tonight in like 15 minutes."

"Ugh, you're right," Preston groaned, briefly looking over at his phone to check the time, and tossed it back down onto the bed. He rolled over and grabbed me by the waist, pulling me closer to him. I grabbed Preston's bicep as he looked at me with a goofy smile, the two of us lying on our sides pressed close to one another, facing each other, "but in the meantime...that means I still have fifteen minutes to cuddle the shit out of you."

"Better not waste any time then. I want all of the cuddles."

Preston smirked, "I never waste time when it comes to cuddles."

I laughed. I snuggled up close against Preston, throwing my leg over his torso as I pressed close against him. Preston held me close by the waist, his fingers running up and down my spine, the soothing action relaxing my body and I became a pile of mush, my head laying against Preston's chest.

And we stayed like that, relaxing in each other's comfort, without any words exchanged. Because we didn't have to say anything to enjoy each other's company. Just being with him, like this, knowing that he was there, was enough for me.

When we arrived at the party, it was close to 10 pm. The house was already packed with people, crowds lounging around in all parts of the main floor, playing games, drinking, and dancing to the blaring music. There were decorations hung around in the house. I held onto Preston's hand the moment we had stepped inside with Phoebe, Kourtney, Joseph, and Kade, just so that I didn't end up losing him in the large crowd.

"Hey guys, glad you could make it!" Pierce, one of Preston's football friends and owner of the house the party was at, greeted us with a smile and a drink in his hand. He and Joseph high five in greeting, pulling each other in for a hug and a pat on the back before Pierce did the same with Preston, who grinned.

"Hey Pierce, how ya doing bud? It's been a bit since we talked," Preston said and wrapped his arm around my waist, holding me close to his side. Pierce grinned at the two of us.

"Yeah it has, hasn't it? I've been good actually. I've started playing ice hockey for the spring season at a local league," Pierce explained. Then, he took on a bit of a sheepish demeanour as he rubbed the back of his neck, "and...there's kind of this guy on the team I think I might be interested in? I don't know, he's kind of cool."

"Oh, is that so? Is he hot?" Joseph piped in, a smirk on his face. Pierce scoffed, a light blush painting his cheeks.

"Of course he is."

"You should totally go for it, how long have you had this crush?"

"Uhm, The season only just started, so a couple of weeks? I don't know, he hasn't really shown any signs of being interested in me?"

"Why not try hanging out with him more, ya know, outside of games? Invite him over," I decided to jump in. Pierce paused at that, biting his lip.

"Yeah...I guess I could do that," He sighed, nodding. He briefly ran his fingers through his hair, before flashing us a smile, "anyways, you guys want drinks?"

After grabbing drinks, I found myself sitting on the armrest of one of the couches in the living room, surrounded by Preston and his quantity of friends. I was a bit uneasy by the fact, mostly just because I didn't know them very well, and I always found it was hard to talk to people at first. What was I even supposed to say to them? Adding to that, ever since that locker prank on Wednesday, people weren't subtle when they continued to stare at me during school. It felt like the whole school knew about the prank at this point so stepping foot into the party was nerve-wracking. But I kept my mouth shut about it.

Preston made it look so easy. People just liked him. He was naturally popular and had that charm about him. He was also highly extroverted when I was anything but, so it was no surprise how eager he was to talk to his football friends. As he chatted with them about school and life in general, I occupied myself with the drink in my hands, taking occasional sips from the red cup, my fingers rubbing against the plastic. Preston had his hand on my thigh as he sat on the couch, laughing and sipping at his drink, and the act was mildly comforting while being in a large crowd.

Kade and Kourtney had gone off on their own somewhere, while Phoebe and Joseph were still with us, occupying the chair across from us. Phoebe was sprawled over her boyfriend's lap, the two of them drinking out of the same cup while they chatted amongst themselves.

It was crowded and loud, and I was starting to feel like I was suffocating.

I placed my hand over the top of Preston's, the one that he had sitting on my thigh, and squeezed it to gain his attention, "hey...I'll be back, I just want to get something to eat."

Preston turned away from the conversation he was having and looked at me with a smile, "alright babe, I'll be here."

I smiled when Preston sat up to kiss me on the cheek, and then the lips, and my cheeks growing hot when his friends whistled and smirked at the two of us. That was when I got off the couch and made my way to the kitchen, pushing past the crowd of bodies as I approached the buffet. There were a couple of boxes of pizza, bowls of chips and other junk food.

I refilled my drink, with fruit punch instead of alcohol, and grabbed a couple of brownies onto a napkin before I found my way outside onto the back patio, where the cool air brushed against my skin, and where it was much less crowded. There were barely any people outside, and for that, I was grateful. It felt like I could breathe a little better being away from the sweaty and suffocating crowd.

I sighed heavily. I stood over by the corner of the deck, leaning against the wall and railing. I took a bite of my brownie, looking out over the pitch-black scenery. There a few trees surrounding the backyard, and they looked like shadows in the dark night, the stars an explosion across the sky. The moon was out, considering it was nearing midnight, and I could hear the sounds of crickets chirping away.

The weather was slightly cold and I probably should have brought my jacket with me, but the fresh air was nice nonetheless. It was relaxing and was enough to calm the anxious feelings that were building up when I was sitting with Preston's friends. They were nice and all, but a part of me felt disconnected around them because I wasn't exactly popular, so to speak. I didn't fit in.

"Hey, Adrien," A voice called out, and the moment I looked up, Carter was standing next to me, his arms resting forwards against the railing. He looked at me with a smile on his face, and I briefly returned it.

"Hey, Carter," I greeted him.

"Whatcha doing out here by yourself?"

"Oh, Uhm...I was just getting some fresh air. It's kind of stuffy in there with all the people," I shrugged, popping the rest of the brownie into my mouth. Carter watched me for a moment without saying anything, and then he chuckled.

"That's understandable," Carter took a sip of his drink that was in his hands, "Preston still in there?"

"Yea, he's just hanging with a few of his football friends."

Carter hummed at that. He didn't say anything after that, and we fell into complete silence for a few minutes, neither of us saying anything. I looked at him briefly, watching him look out into the dark scenery before I looked away and awkwardly nibbled at my second brownie. His silent presence was making me a bit anxious, mostly because I didn't know what to say, or how to strike any conversation, and I didn't have the courage to just up and walk away. So I was suck, in the corner of the deck, with Carter there beside me.

"You know, it's kind of nice out. A bit chilly, but it's peaceful," Carter said. He was looking at me again with a smile of his. I bit my lip.

"Uh, yea, it is nice out. Relaxing."

"Mhmmm," Carter stood up straighter, leaving his drink sitting on top of the railing as he turned to face me, "you know, I saw Preston talking to some queen before I came out here, he seemed pretty occupied with her."

I frowned slightly, "well I mean...he has a lot of friends. He likes to talk."

"Yea, but I mean more like...he seemed like he was flirting a bit. They were sitting quite close together on the couch. Aren't you worried that he might do something?" Carter raised a brow, "you're out here by yourself, and he's in there, surrounded by other people who want him."

"I trust him, Carter. He wouldn't do anything like that to me," I shook my head, and while a part of me knew what I voiced was true - I knew for a fact that Preston would never cheat on me or do anything behind my back, but Carter's words picked at bit at my insecurities, more so that yea, Preston was popular with everyone and he literally could have anyone he wanted.

But no, Preston wouldn't do that to me.

Carter hummed. He nodded his head, and for a moment, his eyes lingered on other parts of me and then back up to my face. That's when I felt a pang of uneasiness in my chest, it only heightening when Carter took a step closer to me.

"You have beautiful eyes, you know that? You're just beautiful in general. Any king would be jealous of Preston, having a queen like you all to himself."

"Carter...." I spoke hesitantly. I set my drink onto the railing, pressing myself back further against the wall as he lingered closer, "you're standing too close."

"Am I?" He murmured. I gasped as he placed his hands on my waist and pulled me closer, pressing himself up against me.

I placed my hands on his chest and tried to push him back, but he wouldn't relent. Instead, he hiked my leg up against his waist as he pressed me up against the wall, trapping me between the wall and his body. I panicked, but just before I could open my mouth and say something, his lips were on mine.

Carter was kissing me.

My heart started pounding hard against my chest and I panicked. I tried to push him off, but he didn't budge as he cupped my face to hold my head still as he kissed me. His lips moved against mine, his tongue forcing its way into my mouth, making me squeeze my eyes shut. At that moment I was frozen, my brain failing to process everything that was happening, and I couldn't do anything about it.

"What the fuck?!"

In a flash, Carter was suddenly pulled off of me, but before I could even react, Preston was there, his fist connecting with Carter's face. Carter stumbled by the contact, and Preston grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and punched him a second time.

"P-Preston, stop!" My eyes widened in horror, and I quickly grabbed Preston by the arm before he could lay another hit. I flinched as Preston suddenly yanked his arm out of my hold, it being like a slap to the face when he whipped his arm away from me so fast, it was like his arm touched fire. What was worse, was that Preston looked at me with such hurt and betrayal in his gaze, and it made my heart shatter in my chest.

But he didn't punch Carter again. Instead, he let him fall to the ground with a bloody nose, and without even a glance towards me, Preston was hurrying his way back inside the house.

"Wait, Preston! Stop!" I called out to him, panic surging in my chest as I quickly hurried after him, tears rushing into my eyes. My heart was racing so fast that blood was pumping in my ears.

Preston ignored my calls and kept pushing through the crowd, towards the front door in a hurry. We got a few looks, but I ignored them as I chased after Preston. When he got to the front door he grabbed his coat, but just as he stepped out onto the front porch, I quickly grabbed onto his arm, stopping him.

"Preston, please, stop and listen to me! I-I can explain—"

"Explain what?!" Preston shouted. He whipped around to look at me with his face contorted into a glare, angry and betrayal blazing in his blue eyes, "I fucking tell you to stay away from Carter, and for what?! I was looking out for you and yet I walked in on you sucking face with that asshole! What the fuck?!"

I started crying. I couldn't hold back the tears any longer and they came rushing out, blurring my vision and staining my cheeks. My heart was hurting, and I didn't know what I could do to fix it. I fucked up. Preston was furious with me. He thinks I cheated on him and just seeing the hurt in his eyes, the way he looked broken underneath the anger, it broke me too. And it was my fault.

It was all my fault.

"P-P-Preston, please!"

"We're done, Adrien," Preston stiffly blurted out, and it was like he stole the oxygen from me, "it's over, I'm done. Leave me alone."

I watched helplessly as Preston turned his back to me as he walked back inside the house, closing the door behind him. I dropped down onto the porch steps and cried, pressing my hands against my face.

Preston broke up with me and it hurt so much. It was like my world collapsed around me, burying me in the rocks. My chest was aching and my throat was starting to hurt from crying so much.

I just lost the person that meant the entire world to me, my best friend, the person who has been there with me since forever. He was gone, and I didn't know what I was going to do without him.
