Lorenzo and I arrive at the mental hospital and I feel uneasy.
“She’s ready to see you two.” One of the receptionist tells us as we wait in the lobby.
“Do we really have to do this?” I ask him and he draws soothing circles over my hand.
“This is how we move on Nala. It’s important.”
I nod and sigh.
“Fine but let’s make this quick because that calzone we had at the pizzeria is moving its way through the chambers fast,” I warn him and he chuckles.
“Same.” He admits as the receptionist leads us through a room that smells like rubbing alcohol. And I see Liani dressed casually, sitting on a blue couch with a worried smile on her face.
“Hello, Lorenzo, Nala.” She says nervously and the receptionist tells us to take a seat and to call her if we need her.
“Laini, how are you?”
She shrugs with a small smile.
“I’m better. The medication has been helping along with the anger management classes. I um wanted to apologize for putting you to through hell, and trying to spit you up.”
“The truth is. You two are great for each other and that made me angrier than ever. I’ve always had this problem growing up but then I stopped taking my medication by the time you and I were going to get married.”
“Why did you stop taking the meds, and why didn’t you tell me about it?”
“I figured you didn’t want to be with me if you knew I had mental problems, and I stopped taking the meds because the meds I took before are different than the ones I take now hand had some pretty bad side effects. I’m sorry Lorenzo. I’m sorry Nala.”
She sounds very sincere for the first time in a long time.
Nala looks at me trying to read my expression.
“I forgive you Laini.” I tell her and Nala pitches in.
“I forgive you too.”
Laini let’s out a relieved breath.
“Thank you. Oh, and I met someone. His name is Ben.”
“Oh, so this ben guy, is he good for you?” I ask her and she blushes.
“Yeah, he’s pretty great. He has Adhd, that’s why he’s here, but he is so funny, and handsome.”
I smile at her.
“I’m glad you’ve found someone who makes you happy Laini. I’ve found that person too.” I say as I squeeze Nala’s hand and Nala rest her head on my shoulder.
“And now you are about to have another little one to make you happy.” She says pointing to Nalas belly.
“Congratulations.” She tell her and Nala thanks her with a warm smile of her own.
An hour later I take Nala to the store to buy some more material dress and outfits, and some baby things. Her belly is growing fast, and the baby is very healthy. We both agreed to not know what the sex of the baby was until birth.
“Dios mio! look how cute this mother-daughter, red matching dresses are!” She squeals in excitement as she feels the material and I chuckle.
“We don’t even know if we’re having a girl or a boy yet Nala.”
“But there’s a daddy and son matching set too.” She says pulling out the tiny little red suit along with the adult version and my mouth droops.
“Oh my goodness that too fucking adorable,” I admit as I take the suites and Nala laughs.
“So are we taking both?”
“Oh yeah, were going to definitely be that family that matches every time we go out, I don’t give a damn what people think,” I tell her, and she gives me an excited smile.
“You know, Nala...”
“Yes?” She says as she looks through more clothing.
“Thank you for today. For hearing Liani out, even though you don’t owe it to her. It meant a lot to me.”
She looks into my eyes with such love that it makes me melt.
“For you, I’ll do anything. Forgiveness isn’t easy for me, but you made me want to forgive.”
I caress the side of her face before placing a soft kiss on her lips.
“I love you.”
“I love you too Nala.”
“Are you ready to go? I could eat some sausage right about now.”
I raise an eyebrow at her.
“When you say sausage are we talking about the same thing?”
She smirks as she places the clothing on the counter.
“I’ll let keep you guessing on that one.”
At home, I get a message from an unknown number. Oh fuck no, I’ve had enough of this creepy number shit.
I place my phone on the charger and head towards the kitchen to eat some Ice Cream. Lorenzo follows shortly after having the same idea, then from the living room I hear my phone chiming with a message again and I groan frustrated.
“What is Nala?”
“It’s another unknown number texting me, why can’t I get a break?” before I finish talking Lorenzo has already made his way to my phone. He picks it up and his brows scrunch in confusion.
“What? What does it say?” I ask him and he double-takes.
“It’s probably just a wrong number. It says, ’Hello pinky, I’m sorry It’s been so long, I just wanted to say hello, so that you know, you don’t think I’m dead or anything.”
My stomach drops at the nickname Pinky and I start to feel lightheaded.
“Nala? What’s wrong? You’re looking a bit pale.”
I shake my head snapping out of it.
“No, no, I’m fine. You’re probably right. It’s just a wrong number.” I say as I take my phone back and he squints his eyes at me, as if not believing a word out of my mouth.
