“I’m pregnant” she whispered to herself trying desperately to calm her breathing. She remembered clearly what the nurse had told her… It came as a shock to her but it explained why she was behaving the way she did lately.
“I can’t tell Mistress Macritti, I just can’t” Nancy cried out feeling very distressed. She couldn’t bear the thought of getting thrown out, she had nowhere to go.
“Breathe.. Just breathe” she continued to try to calm herself down…
"I am going to push through this phase of my life and come out stronger."She finally encouraged herself.
She sunk onto her bed trying hard to embrace the thoughts racing in her head. She had to hurry and get down to meeting Master Baako’s needs.
Nancy wiped the tears that had managed to leak out of her eyes with the bottom of her purple dress.
Getting up, she slipped it off and made her way to the bathroom.
Taking her bath, she made sure to comfort herself by caressing her body. It was the least she could do. She was determined to look her best so she could cover up her secret.
After rummaging through her new set of clothes for a few minutes, she finally settled on an orange flowing dress. She was glad they didn’t give her clothes that would make her look like the typical maid.
Eventually, she was done.
She assessed herself in the mirror once more. She hoped she looked good enough. She soon got tired of looking at herself so she gathered up the last of her courage and opened the door.
Nancy made her way towards Baako's bedroom.
He was already waiting for her.
"You're late!" he bellowed as soon as he saw her. Chills went up her spine freezing her. She hadn't meant to keep so long.
Nancy looked at him waiting to hear him speak. He did.
"I'll excuse you this once since I'm not very hungry, I am in a better mood" he said putting her at ease
"What would you like to eat this evening Master Baako?" Nancy asked unsure.
"Well, I am glad that you asked, I was going to tell you anyway, today, I want you to prepare for me, some boiled yams and cabbage stew"
"Alright master, i'll make that ready for you" Nancy whispered avoiding eye contact. She didn't move an inch though.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Go ahead, i have no more requests" Baako rolled his eyes when he noticed she was still standing there.
"Yes master" Nancy squeaked getting out of there hurriedly.
She was breathing heavily by the time she got to his kitchen. She flinched at the scent emanating from the kitchen rubbing her lower belly unconsciously.
Because of what was going on down in her body, she couldn't be fast as she wanted to be.
She took her time to do everything eventually detesting the smell coming from the cabbage stew.
When she was finally done, she fetched the food into storage bowls and arranged them onto a large tray with the aim of pleasing Baako. She hoped to win his favor someway somehow.
Nancy made her way back to his room to find him asleep.
She sighed in exasperation. 'This day couldn't get any harder' she thought angrily.
"Master Macritti," she tapped his arm.
"Master Macritti, your food is ready"
"Master Macritti!" She raised her voice beginning to feel impatient.
She was about to tap him again when his eyes suddenly opened. She froze in her tracks when she saw them.
She had seen those eyes before...that night.
Almond-shaped, black tinted with shimmery gold.
"No... it couldn't be," she shuddered.
