I walked Mason over to where Marcus and I were sitting. "Mason, is everything okay?" I asked him softly. You could see Mason's eyes were rimmed with red and he just looked so tired.
"My father had a heart attack this morning. Jill my stepmother is not making this easy on any of us."
"Is he dead?" Marcus asked. I shot my face at Marcus.
"No, but he is in critical condition and all decisions are left up to my stepmother. I just don't think she cares and I have no right's to do anything. She has her sister and her sister's daughter coming out to stay with us." I placed my arm around him. I know he has a lot of family problems, but the problems only started when his father married Jill. I mean Marcus and I never knew Mason before Jill, but Mason has always told us what a good man his father was and he very much believes Jill made that man go away. Mason has had a very hard time with his father most of his life now. I guess you could say it was a little surprising seeing him so upset over his father.
"What kind of condition is he in? Do you think he will make it?" I asked him while I held his hand. He was shaking a little.
"He is in a coma and Jill is wanted them to bring him out of it, but the doctors keep insisting that he needs to rest and I think she wants him to die."
"Oh, Mason do you really think that she is that heartless?" Mason turned his head and looked at me.
"Cans, my father is worth millions. She wants that money."
"How does she even know if he left it to her or not?" Marcus asked. Mason had always told us that his father kept his will very privet and no one knew what was in it.
"I'm pretty sure he has left her everything. She is his wife and my father is very loyal to her." Mason said.
"And there is nothing you can do?" I asked. Mason shook his head at me. I felt so bad for Mason. I knew there was nothing we could do for him, but be there. I wrapped my arms around him and held him. My eyes landed on Marcus and he was watching me.
"Why is Jill's sister coming?" Marcus asked.
"Who the hell knows? She says she needs some moral support." I rolled my eyes and Marcus just shook his head.
"Have you met this sister?" I asked.
"Only when I was young, but if I remember she was even worse then Jill. Her daughter is our age."
"And they will be staying with you?" I asked. Mason looked over at me. He smiled at me.
"Trust me, babe, you have nothing to worry about," Mason said. I kind of bit down on my lip and looked away.
"Do you want to stay here tonight?" I asked Mason. He turned and nodded his head at me. Marcus stood up.
"I'm going to head home tonight." He winked at me and gave Mason a fist bump and headed out.
"Give me a second," I said to Mason and followed Marcus out. "Hey?" I said and Marcus turned around the face me. "You don't have to go," I said.
"I know, but Mason really needs you now. It's okay, I'll see you two tomorrow." I walked up to him and kissed him on the cheek. He looked at me for a moment and then softly kissed my lips and then took off. I stood watching him walk off for a moment. I just sighed and headed back out to Mason. Mason was still sitting in the same spot. I walked over to him and took his hand in mine. My parents had already gone off to bed. Mason and Marcus staying the night with me have never been a problem. They have been doing it since we were kids. The older we got my parents just asked that we let them know, but it has never been a problem. I turned all the lights out as Mason grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.
"How was your day of ditching school?" Mason asked as I turned off the last light.
"It was unnecessary." I could see the smile on his face.
"Unnecessary?" I knew he knew what I meant but I felt like he was fishing for information.
"Yes, as in we should of went to school." He wrapped his arm around my shoulder as we made our way to my bedroom.
"Did you have a nice day with Marcus?" I closed the door behind us and mason went and laid back on my bed.
"Yes." He eyed me for a moment.
"What did you do?" I took a seat next to him on the bed. I smiled to myself.
"We spent the day at the river over in middle town." He looked at me. "We kissed." Mason set up on his elbows.
"Did anything else happen?"
"Yeah, your best friend stop it."
"Marcus stopped the kissing?" He asked me with a look of shock on his face.
"Yes, he did."
"Wow." He said and laid back down on the bed.
"I don't think I could stop kissing you." I looked over at him. I crossed my arms.
"Well, he was thinking about you." Mason scrunched his nose at me. "That's not what I meant, you brat." He started to laugh.
"I know, but I still don't think I could be that noble. It's you after all." I just smiled like a sap at him. "In fact, does that mean I get to kiss you too?"
"Haven't we already done that?" I asked him. He rolled over to his side and looked at me.
"So we don't get to kiss anymore because we already have?" I started to speak some sort of gibberish.
"I, well..." I felt his hand go behind my head and he brought my face close to his.
"Tell me to stop Candace." He whispered as our lips were only inches apart.
"I can't," I whispered back, and then our lips met. Our kiss was deep and slow. He took my bottom lip in his mouth a softly bit down. I let out a small moan. He pulled away and our foreheads met. Mason let out a breath of air and then laid back on my bed. "What wrong?" I asked him.
"Nothing and everything. I'm only seventeen. If my father dies and leaves everything to Jill. I'll have nothing, she won't take care of my schooling. I will have nothing and I will be stuck with her until I turn eighteen with nowhere to go." My heart broke and I looked at him. His face and eyes were so full of worry. "I know my father and I have had our problems, but he is my father and I love him. I'm not ready for him to go." I watched as a single tear fell down. I crawled next to him and laid my head on his chest.
"You will always have me," I said to him and his arms went around me.
"Will you stay with me?"
"I will always be with you. Nothing can ever change that."
"Thank you," Mason said and then kissed the top of my head. I woke up the next morning still in Mason's arms. His phone started to go off. It woke him up and he pulled it out.
"Hello? What do you mean he is gone?" I sat up and watched him. All of a sudden his phone smashed against the wall and went everywhere and Mason fell to the ground on his knees. I went to him and pulled him into my arms as my dad came running into my room.
"What the hell is going on?" My father yelled out. I looked at my dad with tears pouring down my face. My dad ran over to us. "What happened?" He asked joining us on the floor. Mason looked up at my father.
"He is dead, my father has died."
