Chapter 13

Black used to be one of my favorite colors to wear. That was until I had to wear it for my best friend's father's funeral. I was never close or even really cared for Mason's father, but to see the pain in his eyes. Broke my heart. In the last three days, Mason has been here with me. His stepmother Jill has taken over his home. Her sister showed up the day his father past away. Her daughter a girl named Crystal came with her. Mason wants nothing to do with them and has done his best to stay away from them. Today is his father's funeral and Mason headed home last night. Marcus is going to go with me and my family to the funeral. We are going to be there for him. "You looked, beautiful babe." I heard Marcus's voice. I turned to look at him standing in my doorway. I smiled at him and finished brushing out my hair.

The church was full of people. Mason's father was a respected man. They had a lot of friends and family. We ended up having to sit way in the back, but Mason knew we were here. The servers lasted about an hour and we all waited outside to see Mason. He was standing with his stepmother and other family members. I watched him from afar. That's when I saw a young girl stand next to him and she gave him a hug. I was assuming that girl must have been Crystal. I felt a sting of jealousy for just a moment. The girl was beautiful. "Dont let her get to you, she is a brat. Mason can't stand her." Marcus said in my ear next to me. I looked up at him and just gave him a smile. We were sitting on some benches outside of the church.

I wasn't really sure if we were going to actually get to see Mason or not, but I didn't want to leave just yet. Marcus and I stayed as my parents decided to head back home. I promised them I would give Mason their love. People started to finally clear out and I watched as Mason made his way over to Marcus and myself. He just looked beat up. He looked tired and his eyes were rimmed in red. I stood up and went right into his arms. "Mason?" We all heard someone yell behind us. We turned to see Crystal heading over towards us. I was still in Mason's arms and I went to move away, but he held onto me. "Jill wanted me to find you. We're getting ready to head to your father's lawyer's office." She stood there and just looked at me.

"Crystal this is my best friend Candace and Marcus." Mason introduced us.

"Oh, your best friends?" She said. "Are you coming?" She never even said hello to us. Yep, this chick is a snot. I just shook my head. I looked up at Mason.

"Will I see you tonight?" I said to him. He kissed the top of my head and before he could answer me. Crystal cut in.

"He will be very busy." She said.

"First of all Crystal. Your not my boss. You dont talk for me." Mason said to her and you could see the hurt on her face.

"I'm sorry I wasn't trying to be rude. I just know your busy with family right now."

"My only family has just died. Your family is not my family." He snapped and I gave him a little squeeze. He looked down at me.

"I promise you will see me tonight." I nodded at him and Marcus and I watched him walk off with Crystal.

"Wow, she seems like a lot of fun," Marcus said.

"She is a snot, is what she is," I said. Marcus decided that he was going to stay over tonight. We both really wanted to know what went on with Mason's father's will. Things could go so many ways and we were actually really worried about Mason. We all knew the kind of gold-digging woman Jill is. Mason won't be eighteen for almost six months.

"Do you think his father will actually leave Mason with nothing?" I asked Marcus. "I mean you were over there with him way more than I was. You know his father better then I do."

"I really dont know. His father could be a real son of a bitch sometimes. All he seemed to care about was Jill. I know for a fact that she is going to be set for life. Well, if she doesn't spend it all in one sitting." I smiled and just shook my head.

"Well, Mason dont need his fathers money. He will go on and do just fine for himself. I am more worried about him not being able to go to college." I said. It wasn't until around nine pm when Mason finally showed up. He walked inane I was having a hard time reading him. He walked in and just laid back on my bed at mine and Marcus's feet. Marcus and I both stayed quiet waiting for Mason to talk. He looked over at us with a smile on his face.

"What?" He asked us.

"What happened?" I spit out. He rolled over and looked at us.

"It's mine, everything is mine." Marcus and I looked at each other. Then back at Mason.

"He left her nothing?" I asked.

"Well, not really. He set up a stipulation with her. She can have the house and one million dollars. If she finishes raising me with no problems. My father's company belongs to me but not until I turn twenty-one. If I decide that I dont want to take it over. I'm to hand it over to the shareholders. When I turn eighteen. I will receive Around eight million dollars. All my schooling is completely paid for." I was overjoyed for him. I honestly thought he wasn't going to get a thing, but Mason is set for life.

"How did Jill take this?" I asked.

"She is pissed off, but I know she wants the house and there isn't anything she can do about it." I went over and hugged him.

"I'm so happy for you. Looks like he did love you more." I said. He smiled and I could still see the pain on his face. He laid back onto his back.

"I'm just happy that I'm going to be okay. I really thought this was going to go a different way." He said.

"So what's with this Crystal girl?" Marcus asked.

"Oh yeah, here's the kicker. Jill is going to let them live here. I'm stuck with them."

"She seems like a lot of fun," I said.

"She is a bitch," Mason said. "She also won't stop following me around like a damn lost puppy dog."

"She is pretty," I said. Both of them just looked over at me.

"Trust me when I say you're prettier. It's okay because you will get to know her. She has to go to school with us. I dont mean that we have to hang out with her, but she starts school on Monday." I just rolled my eyes. I wasn't looking forward to this at all.

"This sounds like it's going to be a whole lot of fun," Marcus said.

"We dont have to entertain her you know," Mason said.

"Yeah, but you said it yourself. She follows your ass around. You dont think she won't do that crap at school?" Marcus said.

"If she does. I'm just going to have to tell her to back off." I just sat there and listened to them talk. I knew in the back of my head. This girl is going to cause problems. "Jill was also left with money to take care of me until I turned eighteen, but I'm sure I won't see a dime of it."

"I'm pretty sure you can count on that," Marcus said. I wasn't looking forward to Monday. I just knew Crystal was going to cause a problem. Monday morning rolled around and I was shocked to see Macrs sitting in the back seat of Mason's car and Crystal sitting in the front seat. I just sighed and made my way to the car.

"Good morning Candace." Crystal said as I closed the door. Everyone else stayed quite.

"Good morning." I felt the least I could do was be polite. I felt Marcus's hand touch mine and he had a sympathetic look on his face. I just smiled at him and it stayed pretty quiet the rest of the drive to school. Crystal had to be in the office this morning to receive her schedule. Mason was asked to show her around and he didn't want to make any waves so he agreed. We saw him again at lunchtime and of course, he had his little shadow following him. He walked over to me and took a seat next to me. He placed his arm around me.

"Help me." He said and all I could do was giggle.

"So Crystal, hows your day going so far?" Marcus asked as she took a seat on the other side of Mason. Missy was just staying quiet and I tried to hide my smile. We had already warned Missy about Crystal.

"It's going great. Mason here is a real help." She said as she placed her hand on Mason's leg. I shot daggers at her and then tried to remember myself. I knew she was after something when it came to Mason and I wasn't happy. "So Marcus, tell me about yourself?" She asked him. This bitch, I said to myself.

"Nothing much to tell. What you see is what you get." He said. I smile at him.

"Well, what I see is nice." She said smiling at him. All I could do was shake my head. This bitch has me all messed up. Problems are all I can see from her and now I believe she is only going to be a huge headache. Not only for them but for me as well.
