Two months later...
I'll be heading home in less than a week. My summer here has been life-changing, to say the least. I'm not sure if a person can change overnight, but I sure did. Now I don't want to sound like I completely changed who I was because that's not true, but I did, however, come out of my shell. I felt more like a human being. I felt more like a woman then I had ever felt before. I liked being a girl and I have my cousin Brittany to thank for that. she made me feel beautiful and so did Max. I know that I had said that I would never do a long-distance relationship but about three weeks into my summer. We had a cookout and Max gave me my first kiss. it wasn't anything dirty, it was just a soft peek on my lips, but it meant a lot to me. I spent the rest of the summer with him and Brittany and her boyfriend. I became very close with them. I'm really going to miss them when I go. I haven't had a ton of contact with Marcus and Mason.
It wasn't a choice any of us made. We all just had things going on this summer. Mason ended up going off on a huge camping trip with his entire family. Like a family reunion type of thing. Marcus told me all about this girl he met at some party out of town and that he really likes her. After that, I didn't really hear too much from them. I mean we sent a simple text here and there but other than that it was pretty quiet.
My aunt ended up making me a doctor's appointment and I got myself some contacts. It took me a little while but I ended up getting used to them pretty fast. Brittany talked me into adding some light blond high lights to my hair. I started dressing differently and even learned how to do my makeup. My personality hasn't changed much. I'm a little more outgoing and not so shy. I mean at least I'm that way here. I'm hoping that I won't change back and hide again.
My parents were picking me up from the airport. Mason wasn't going to be home until the following day and I hadn't heard anything from Marcus. My grandmother was still holding on and I kissed her goodbye. I thanked her for her wisdom and promised to try and not lose myself once again. I knew this was the last time I would see her. Brittany and I both cried at the airport. "I'm going to miss so much. It was nice having a good female friend." She said as I hugged her.
"You could always move to the states," I said in her ear. She smiled at me and then I gave my aunt a big hug.
"You really do look beautiful Candace, don't let anyone bring you down." I waved one last goodbye as I boarded the plane home. I was a little nervous for the guys to see the new me and I hoped they wouldn't make fun of me. I was wearing a pair of short shorts and a pink tank top with a pair of black sandals. My hair was straightened and laying down my back. My sunglasses were holding my hair back for me. I took one last look out of the plane's window and then closed my eyes.
"Candace? Is that you?" My mother asked when I went into her arms. It's been three months and nothing here has changed. MY parents still looked the same.
"Yes mom, it's me," I said smiling. "Do you like it?"
"Where are your glasses?" She asked me.
"In my bag. Aunt Carlo got me contacts. Do you not like it?" I asked her as we started heading towards baggage.
"I love it, your beautiful."
"Thank you," I said and blushed a little.
"We haven't seen Mason or Marcus all summer. Sorry their not here with us."
"It's cool, they have been pretty busy this summer. I'm sure I'll see them both soon and things will get back to normal." We grabbed my bags and headed home. One of the first things I did was send Mason and Marcus a text letting them both know I was home. We still had a week before school started. I stood in my borning bedroom and decided it was time to change that too. Everything in my bedroom was dark and gloomy. I wasn't sure what was wrong with me but I changed over the summer and my room needed a makeover. I took the dark curtains down off of my large bedroom window and opened the window to let air flow in. I crossed my arms and stood in the middle of the room. I shook my head. "Mom!" I yelled out. She came walking into the bedroom.
"What's the matter?" She asked as she walked in.
"Can we go to the store. I have to change this room. It's driving me crazy." My mother smiled. By the time night fell I had a pretty light blue splashed across my bedroom walls. Blue had become a color I really fell for over the summer. While Brittany pledged me with purples, blue ended up being the color I liked better than black. I had gotten some paint and a new bed set. The bed set was also full of blues. I cleaned out my room and did a little rearranging. I was happy with the changes and realized Mason and Marcus hadn't answered my text. I pulled my phone out and texted them both again.
"Thanks a lot, guys." I sent it to both of them. Then my phone started to go off.
"Sorry Can's I won't be back until tomorrow." Mason sent. I knew he couldn't help it, but where the hell was Marcus? Then my phone went off again.
"I'm on my way." Marcus sent. Shit, I got out of the bed and ran into the bathroom. I brushed out my hair and added some lip gloss. I had been busting my butt all day fixing my room. I looked like a mess. I ran down the stairs and announced Marcus was on his way over.
"And it starts." I heard my father say. I just smiled as I waited by the front door for him to show. I was so excited to see my best friend. I really did miss them both a lot. I waited a few minutes until I saw him come walking up the driveway. I ran out the front door and jumped into his arms.
"Whoa Can's," I heard him say as my arms went around him. I felt him wrapped his arms around me.
"I missed you so much," I said in his ear. He pushed me back some and started to look me up and down.
"What the hell happened over the summer?" He asked.
"What do you mean?' I said smiling at him.
"Damn baby you got hot." I lost it when he said that. I couldn't help it. I did a little turn around for him.
"Do you like it?"
"Very much, Candace you're beautiful."
"Aww, stop it, Marcus," I said blushing a little. "Are you wearing contacts?" I nodded at him. He wouldn't stop starring at me.
"Okay, Marcus you're starting to get creepy. Come on let's go inside." He just followed me without saying a word.
"Hey, guys I made chili dogs." My mother yelled from the kitchen. I looked over at Marcus who was still watching me.
"Are you hungry?" I asked him and he nodded his head at me. "Marcus are you okay?" He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"I don't know if I can have a hot best friend." I burst out laughing.
"Marcus, would you cut it out? It's still me I just don't want to hide anymore. The only real difference is my glasses and my hair."
"Bull shit, Candace. I can see you and I like what I see." I looked at him for a moment.
"Didn't you meet a girl over the summer?" I said softly. Marcus looked away.
"Yeah, but summer is over now."
"What the hell does that mean?" I asked him. He was shoving food into his mouth and I sat there waiting for him to finish.
"It means that summer is over and its time to get back to normal life."
"So she was just a summer fling?"
"I guess you could say that."
"Wow Marcus, nothing special about her at all?"
"What do you want me to say Cans? She was awesome and I fell in love with her."
"If that was the truth, yes."
"Did you meet anyone this summer?" He asked me and I thought about Max.
"I did." Marcus snapped his head at me.
"What?" He asked.
"I did and I had my first kiss." I always share everything with Marcus and Mason. I mean they are my best friends. Only Marcus didn't look happy about what I had just told him. In fact, he looked a little upset.
"So now you have a boyfriend?" He snapped. I looked at him funny.
"No, I don't have a boyfriend. Come on Marcus he lives in England. I won't do anything like that. It's too hard on both of us. We would never see each other."
"So you just go away for the summer. Completely change yourself. Meet a guy go around kissing him and then come home all hot and wonder why I asked you." I smiled at him.
"Marcus James, If I didn't know any better. I would say you were jealous." He just looked at me for a moment. He sighed.
"Your my best friend Cans, I'm just looking out for you. Did you do anything else besides kiss?" I smiled and shook my head.
"That's my business mister, and something you don't need to worry about." I got up and took my plate to the sink. I turned to look at him and he had his head cocked. "Oh my god Marcus, no nothing but a kiss happened." He smiled at me and started to rub his head.
"Just wait until Mason sees you."
