“Tell me why we are having a party at our house tonight?" Marcy looked at Riley.

"Because, it's our sophomore year of college! And why not!? We have three years left of this place and we should throw a party for making one year without getting pregnant or getting anyone else pregnant." He laughed while throwing a tater tot in his mouth. We all were at our lunch table in the middle of the cafeteria.

"Let me just think about how this sounds... Yeah, I'm gonna go with no." Marcy rolled her eyes.

"You're so lame. Parties are fun, don't you think doll face?"

"Uh, no. I hate parties. The only party I liked was my birthday party. But even that kicked my ass." I took a bite out of my pizza.

"I think that it's a great idea." Justin smiled as he leaned over the table and took some of my tater tots.

"What the fuck? You have your own food." I smacked his hand away.

"I do?" He looked at his plate and smiled stupidly. "I do!" He took a bite of his pizza and scrunched up his face. “Yours is better." He grabbed my whole tray and ate my food.

"You're suck a dick!" I scoffed.

"At least I have one." He smiled.

"Well I would hope so."

"Well if that's the case, then why do you have one?"

"I don't and even if I did, it would be way bigger than your 1 inch."

"You do realize, this means war."

"Bring it on Buccky Mc Boing Boing." I threw a napkin at his face and stuck my tongue out at him.

"No fair!" Justin threw a napkin back at me but Riley smacked him on the back of his head. "Ow! What the hell?" Justin flailed his arms in the air.

"Don't throw stuff at her." Riley warned.

"She freaking started it."

"And I'm freaking ending it."

"Fuck you and your softness."

"Whatever. Janessa, what the hell do you see in him?" Riley rolled his eyes at Janessa.

"I don't know. What did you see in Kate?" She shot back with a sassy smirk on her face.

"Nothing." He shook his head quickly and he made a quick glance with his eyes towards me, I think he was hoping I wouldn’t notice, but I did. There was a stillness that fell over the group and I didn’t like it, I shifted my weight in my seat and looked down at my food.

"Uh, who's Kate?" I asked quietly and everyone looked at me like they just noticed my existence.

"Oh, uh-she's um... She's you know, uh... She's ummm..." Marcy tried to explain, but was doing a terrible job.

"She's a girl that Riley had sex with and dated for like a little bit back in high school, but then broke up with." Ryan stated and everyone looked at him. Riley gave him a death glare that scared the shit out of Ryan. "Dude, I'm sorry, she asked!" Ryan defended but Riley's face hardened even more.

"Thank you Ryan, for telling me. But I lost my appetite. I'm gonna go study." I got up from the table and walked away with my head down.

"Doll face! Doll face!" I heard Riley shout and run after me, but I just ignored him and quickened my pace.

I got into my room and screamed in my pillow. I just let all of my emotions go and balled my eyes I screamed until my lungs couldn't function.

I was more frustrated with myself than the fact that Riley’s ex may be at the party. We aren’t together and he hasn’t even given me a good enough excuse for why he doesn’t want to be with me. Maybe I’m the issue, maybe I’m just not good enough for him to fully be invested in. Maybe all I am is the roommate that he wasn’t to smash and get over.

After I got all my emotions out, I got off my bed. I went into the bathroom and cringed at what stared back at me in the mirror. I washed my face and removed all the makeup off my face. I dried my face and tried to calm my breathing. I gripped the sides of the sink tightly and gritted my teeth.

Riley is nothing to me anymore. We will never be together and will never love each other. I am a FOOL for liking him. We are just roommates, and nothing else. Not now, not ever.

I grabbed my phone and Face Timed Kimberly. "Hey! Wait, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" She looked concerned.

"Hey. It's nothing." I waved it off.

"No it's obviously something. What is it? Does it have to do with Riley?"

"Please don't say his name."

"Okay. What did he do?"

"He didn't. It's just, this girl he used to date might be coming to this party we're having and I'm terrified that they'll hook up again because I haven’t told him how I felt and I keep waiting for him to make a move first and when he does I get too scared and leave it off.”

"I'm gonna kill him if he does. I will personally come up there and rip off his penis!"

"Thanks. But I think I can handle him."

"So what are you gonna do?"

"Go to the party and never let him out of my sight. I guess that I could do that, but I rather let him do whatever he wants and I'll do whatever I want. He's his own person."

"Remember what you promised me?"

"To not let him slip through my fingers..."

"Yes. So you don't let that happen. But I have to go. My last period is gonna start soon and I have to finish my homework for it."

"Okay. Thanks Kimbs for talking with me. Bye."

"You're welcome. And remember the promise. Bye." We ended the call and I sat in the silence of my room.

"Hey. Are you sure you want to go to the party?" Marcy asked me as her and Janessa were in my room with me as we got ready for the party.

"Yes. I told you, I'm fine. I just had to study, but now I'm done. So let's go." I said as I touched up and laid my edges down on my wig.

"Alright. Well the boys are already there and some other people are arriving." Marcy looked at me with unease about her.

Once they were ready, we left the university in my Jeep. "So you don't have a problem with picking up Kate?" Janessa asked me as we were driving to Kate's house.

"Nope. I don't care." I waved it off.

"You sure, 'cause you're kind of gripping the wheel a little tight there."

"I'm fine."

"Whatever you say. Her house is the second one on your side." She pointed out Kate's house and I pulled in the driveway. Kate came out and I knew exactly why Riley dated her. She had long blonde hair, perfect fair skin, green eyes, and was tall like Riley.

"Hey Kate." Marcy and Janessa smiled as she got in the backseat with Janessa.

"Hey." She smiled and I felt sick.

Okay, she wins the pretty contest.

"Hi I'm Naomi.” I introduced myself but I wasn't very smiley when I did it either.

"Hi I'm Kate." She smiled.

"Bitch..." I muttered under my breath. I drove us out of her driveway and to the party. They were in their own conversation about who knows what. I put in my head phones and blasted my music. I had a bad feeling about Kate. I was threatened by her. I knew she would change everything and take Riley from me. But, if he dates her again, then we will all know how he feels about me.

We finally got to the party and there were people everywhere. The music blared, beer kegs were around each corner, people dancing and making out, and everyone was having fun.

"Hey!" Riley greeted us when we got into the kitchen. Janessa and Justin went somewhere together and Ryan and Marcy did the same but in a different direction.

"Hey Riley." I smiled at him, but he didn't seem to notice me.

"Hey Kate." He was in complete awe of her. He wrapped his arm around her and took her somewhere.

Are you fucking kidding me!?

I was so angry, so I grabbed a full bottle of vodka and chugged it like my life depended on it. I found a random guy and started dancing on him and making out with him.

Riley can suck it! I don't need him!

I was forgetting all about him and just drank and danced.

"Where's Riley?" I asked Marcy as she was drinking from a red solo cup.

"In there." She pointed to a crowd behind her.

"Okay, thanks."

"I need to talk to him."

"Don't go in there."

"Mars! I'm fine. Just let me..." I looked around a corner and saw Riley making out with Kate. They were eating each other faces off like their lives depended on it. Marcy was holding onto my arm, trying to pull me back.

"Naomi..." She looked at me with sad eyes.

"I'm going to go. I have to study anyway." I slipped through her grasp and walked out of their house. I headed towards Rick and went to open the driver door, when I saw someone. "What the hell are you doing here?" I snarled at him. He turned to face me and I knew it was Boomer.

"Well, I came to talk to Riley, but I decided not to. I was just leaving." He looked to the ground and hung his head down.

"Then go."

"Why are you out here? Shouldn't you be with Riley?"

"He's a little busy with getting his face sucked off."

"I thought you two were-"

"No. We are just friends."

"Then why aren't you kissing another guy and enjoying yourself?"

"I..." I let my voice trial off I thought about his words and realized that he had a point.

Boomer took a step towards me and I backed away from him. "Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. Can we talk?" His face was full of sadness.

"Sure. But keep your hands to yourself." I rolled my eyes.

"I will. I will never touch you again."

"Okay. What do you want?"

"I just want to say that I'm sorry for what I did to you."

"Sure you are."

"Really, I am. I was drunk and high. I wasn't thinking. I really like you Naomi, but I just don't know why I would do that to you. I can never forgive myself for what I did to you."

"So, are you asking for my forgiveness?"

"Maybe. I just wanted you to know that I am very sorry and I really like you."

"I can forgive you, but I can't forget." I sigh, maybe I was being too harsh? We were both intoxicated and we’re just kids, maybe I’m blowing the whole thing up. Plus he apologized and seems sincere, maybe he’s different.

"I know. Naomi please, can I have a second chance?" He got closer to me and got on his knees and begged.

"I guess. But if you screw up again, I will get a restraining order against you." I folded my arms across my chest.

"I promise I won't." He stood and smiled.

"Do you want to get out of here?"

"And go where?"

"Well, Riley will probably crash here, so we can go back to my dorm and talk."

"I would love to." He got into the passenger side of my Jeep and I got behind the wheel.

You shouldn't be doing this Brina. My heart warned me.

She's fine. Riley doesn't care about her. Let her have fun and make decisions herself. My mind said to reassure my uneasy heart. I gripped the wheel tightly and drove us to the university.
