Chapter 9

Talia's Point of View

After the nurse left I laid there in bed until a knock sounded at my door. I turned to see who it was when Mitchell came in. I turned my head back to look out the window. I didn't really want to talk to him plus my throat was still killing me. He walked over to the empty chair and sat down. "I hope you don't mind if I keep you company. The nurse said your mom had to go home to get some clothes and to check on your brother and sister!"
I never rolled over to look at him. I was still pissed at him for bringing my brother into our sparing match.
"Talia listen I know you're mad at me. I'm not stupid but I came in to apologize. I was under command to bring your brother into our fight. I never wanted to."
That caught my attention. I turned my head so fast to look at him I got dizzy. Clearing my throat and closing my eyes all I could get out was "Why?" I felt like it was enough to get my point across. He didn't answer me for what felt like an eternity. When I reopened my eyes to look at him he looked sad. He looked to me as if he was contemplating what to say. "He's my Alpha. I couldn't go against him!" I just stared at him. That was all the explanation I was going to get. I didn't think so. "Why did he order you to attack my brother?" My voice came out a mere whisper and cracked in the middle but I knew he heard! Again silence followed my question. Grabbing my hand he was about to explain why when the door slammed open and a very angry Grayson occupied the doorway.

Without looking at me he stared straight at Mitchell. "What the fuck are you doing in here?" If looks could kill I was sure Mitchell would be dead. You could feel the anger radiating off of Grayson and to be honest it scared me a little. Dropping my hand he stood up "Grayson it's not what you think. I came in to talk to her and apologize."
I looked to Mitchell "Apologize?"
"Yes, Talia. I wanted to apologize to you for attacking your brother and to keep you company. Once I heard your mom left...?"
"So you just thought you would scoop in and be the big hero to my mate!" As Grayson spoke I stared wide-eyed at him. I knew we were mates I just hoped he didn't know. Walking towards his Beta he grabbed him by the front of his shirt and forced him out of the room before slamming the door. He turned to me and a new look occupied his eyes. Anger still filled his face but his eyes held regret. What could he regret? Admitting that we were mates out loud? Having his Beta force my hand in the fight? I watched as he moved over to the window and stood with his back to me. I tried to sit up but pain shot through me and I hissed. His hands were instantly on my shoulders pushing me back down.

"Don't do that!"

I just looked at him letting his scent surround me and taking it all in. It was so calming. Plus the current I felt was pretty nice too. It didn't hurt but more tingled and tickled as our skin made contact. When he let me go he went back to the window to stand. I watched his back and could see the muscles in his jaw tick. The black shirt he wore did nothing to hide his well defined back. Mentally slapping myself I had to quit starring. Not being able to stand the silence anymore "What happened?"
He looked at me and took in my question. He came and sat down in the chair where Mitchell sat. "Thompson happened." Watching him I could see a new spark of anger fill him. My look of confusion must have prompted him to keep telling me. "After your match with Mitchell, you were down meaning the match was over." His hands balled into fists so hard his knuckles turned white. "Instead of letting you get up, he kicked you when you were down, literally. Breaking your ribs. The force caused it to turn and puncture your lung, Talia." I could feel the terror rise up in me. He noticed it too because he grabbed my hand. "Then while you lay there he felt it a good idea to then try to smash your skull against the ground." My breathing was becoming quicker and I could feel my heart start to beat faster. The monitor picked up on it too. He looked to the monitor and then to me. I looked him in the eyes to see if he was lying but it was clear he wasn't. "How did I get here?"
"I brought you here. If I hadn't you would have died. The medical center on the grounds flooded last night. A pipe broke I believe and the shut-off valve wouldn't stop the water."
Trying to take calm deep breaths was hard with my broken ribs and the bandage meant to hold them in place was wrapped so tightly around my body. Grayson got up and grabbed the oxygen mask as the alarm on my monitors started to go off. The nurse popped her head in to make sure I was ok and he waved her off. Pulling the mask down, "Why did you save me?"
The stone-cold Grayson was back in a flash. He stood up and went to the window. "Not for the reason you think!"
Confusion set in my already aching head. What was the reason he thought I thought?
"I know were mates Talia but there is something that you have to understand. I don't want a mate. I don't want you to be my mate. I'm happy and fine running my pack by myself."
It felt like someone stabbed me in the chest. "So you are rejecting me?" I tried to hide the tears threatening to fall down my cheeks. I didn't want a mate like Grayson anyways. He was cold and I always wanted love as my parents had. None the less rejection was horrible. The pain that followed you the rest of your life weakened you and usually was followed by death.
"No, I'm not going to reject you and set myself up to be weak!"
"Then what?" I tried to say my voice cracking.
"We just won't complete the mating process, Talia. Simple. You go on and be Luna to your pack and I will remain here. It's not a hard concept." His words came out hard with a bit of irritation attached.
I turned away from him as best as I could. "Then you should of just let me die!"
I could hear him sigh from the window but I never looked back at him. I didn't want to see him. "We are better off this way Talia. Trust me."
With that, he walked out the door and I laid there in bed and cried myself to sleep!
