"Jane It's dinner time! Put your book down for once and come eat!"
Dammit! Just when I got into a great chapter too. I ran downstairs and saw that my step-dad, my brother Alex, and my sister Lucy, were already sitting down and talking among themselves. My mom put down the roast on the table then sat down herself. I made my way to the table when I heard a knock at the door. My step-dad got up to go answer the door when I sat down.
When he opened the door, there was a teen standing on the other side, and damn was he so sexy looking. He had wavy chocolate brown hair, looked to be 6'4, very muscular, he had one dangly feather earring on one of his ears, he also had a sharp jawline and tattoos all down his arms and hands. He wore a black Johnny Cash muscle shirt on, blue skinny jeans, and a pair of dark brown laced up boots. He had a backpack over his right shoulder and a large black duffel bag in his left hand.
My step-dad looked confused "Yes?"
He guy looked at the small piece of paper in his hand "Is this the Owens resident? Are you Jacob Owens?"
"Yes I am, and who might you be?"
"I'm your son."
I heard my mom silently gasp, my sister's eyes got big.
"17 years ago you met a women named Alice Welsh, you fell in love, got engaged to her, but as soon as you heard she was pregnant you took off. Well guess what, a month ago she died, and the pregnancy you ran out on lead to me being born. I have no living relatives, so I have no choice but to come here."
My step-dad was at a lost for words, and so was I. I can only imagine what my mom is thinking right now, and he's going to be living here?
"Yes, well..come in. We were just starting dinner."
He closes the door then looks over to my mom "Can we talk in private for a moment?"
My mom nods then follows him into another room. The guy just stands in the living room, waiting. He finally notices my siblings, and then me. For some reason as soon as his eyes find me, they don't look away. I almost forget how to breath. Was he looking at my auburn hair? My medium sized chest? Maybe it was the freckles across my cheek bones and nose? My green eyes? I can't figure it out.
I suddenly hear some of the conversation between my mom and my step-dad.
"Well we can't kick him out Jacob, you heard him, you're his only living relative. He has to stay here with us, we have a guest bedroom that he can take, and he can start school on Monday. Now show him where his bedroom is and invite him to eat with us."
"Are you sure Mary?"
"He's your son, whom you walked out on, yes I'm sure Jacob."
They walk back out, my mom sits down and my step-dad walks over to his son.
"What's your name?"
"Well welcome to our home Evan, you'll be staying here for now on. We have a guest bedroom that's now yours, and you'll be starting school Monday."
"Yes, it's required in this household to attend school, so Monday you'll be attending Brooks High, with your step siblings."
He points to me "That's Jane, she's the same age as you and is in the same grade as you."
He then points to my brother "That's Alex, he's 16 and is a junior."
He points at Lucy next "That's Lucy, she's 15 and a sophomore."
He finally points to my mom "And that's my wife Mary."
Evan showed no signs of emotion, frankly he looked like he rather be anywhere else but here.
"Right, let me show you to your room, and you are welcome to have dinner with us."
"Nah I'm good, I'll just go to my room."
They both head upstairs, then everyone is silent, until my mom speaks up.
"Now that Evan will be living here, we must respect his space. If his door is closed then leave him alone. If you have to speak to him then knock on his door first. Jane you'll be in the same grade as him so please show him around and help him if he needs it. I know this is shocking and a big change, but we will adapt to it."
Once my step-dad came downstairs we finally ate, then cleaned up and went to bed. Lucky me that Evan's bedroom was right next to mine, and we had the luxury of joining rooms, so there was a door that opened to both of our bedrooms. I don't know why that was there, but I'm never opening that door now.
I took a shower, brushed my teeth, put some moisturizer on my face, grabbed my book, and got in my bed. I put on my glasses and started where I left off before. Soon loud music started pouring in from Evan's bedroom, so incredibly loud that it was interrupting my reading. I said I wasn't going to open the door, but he's leaving me no choice.
I threw open the door and saw him standing there shirtless, in sweats, and trying to work the TV. There were tattoos all over his torso, and he had tight, rock hard abs. Like holy shit.
I suddenly forgot why I opened the door to begin with.
He saw me in the door way then paused his music. "Is there something you need?"
"I-uuuh-damn-I mean-uh." I shook my head then spoke again "Your music is really loud and I'm trying to read."
He chuckled "Read? You're a book nerd?"
I started to get angry "Yes I am a book nerd, It's how I escape this bullshit world, now If you kindly turn down your music, that would be great."
I was about to close the door when he spoke "I'll think about it."
"No you won't think about it, you'll do it."
He smirked, god is that sexy. "Or what book nerd?"
I walked up to him and crossed my arms "I like to get up early, very early, I enjoy my morning run, shower, healthy breakfast, and hopefully some downtime before I drive to school. If you keep bothering me, I'll make sure you get up just as early as I do, you know, grabbing your speaker and putting it far from your bed then blaring the loudest music until you're forced to get up and turn it off. Are we clear?"
He crossed his strong arms, enhancing his muscles, then glaring down on me. "Fine, I'll give you this one. But threaten me again, and you'll find yourself in a war. Cause after all, you're not actually my sister, so I can mess with you in all of the spots that make girls squirm."
He looks down to my body, I suddenly feel hot and burning, and I knew I had to leave that room.
I pretend his words don't affect me then walk out, closing the door behind me. I lay my back on the door and let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
How can I handle living with this guy? And going to school with him at the same time. I won't let him get to me, as far as I'm concerned, he's just a roommate to me.
And that's all he'll ever be...right?
