Chapter 42

Daniel watched Amelia move among the group of people, chatting and introducing herself to those she didn’t know.

“She’s a natural,” Lord Watson commented, coming up to his left side.

“She is. I knew she was nervous this morning, but she’s been amazing all day.

“I want her to meet Gwen and Caleb before they head out. Can you catch her attention?” Lord Watson asked, Daniel nodded, and waited. She made eye contact with him every few minutes. He knew it was her way of checking in to make sure she was doing the right thing. When their eyes met, she noticed Lord Watson. He jerked his head subtly toward her father and she nodded her understanding.

“She will be over in a minute.”

“I wanted to tell you Lady Valerie broke into our apartment yesterday,” Daniel commented, keeping his voice light.

“Nick told me about it. I spoke with Valerie about her overstepping. She won’t do it again.”

“Thank you. She upset Amelia and I won’t have my mate being upset, especially over something that is nonexistent,” Daniel replied, he put a touch of his alpha power behind his words.

“I apologize that my wife made Amelia feel uncomfortable. I had no idea she would do something like that. It was unacceptable and I told her so,” Lord Watson assured him. Daniel nodded and let the matter drop. What Lord Watson didn’t know was Alex had started an investigation of Valerie Watson from before she was married to Lord Watson. Daniel didn’t want to think ill of his best friend’s stepmother, but her actions were suspicious.

“Hello father,” Amelia greeted Lord Watson, kissing him gently on the cheek. Lord Watson’s facade to the world melted, and he gave Amelia a loving smile.

“Hello, my daughter. How are you feeling today?” he asked, Daniel watched Amelia guard her answer.

“I am well. This has been a wonderful way of getting to know others in a less formal setting. The party last weekend made me nervous,” she shared, sliding in to stand at Daniel’s side. He took her hand and tucked it in the crook of his arm. He wanted her touch.

“I want to apologize for Lady Valerie's actions. It was inappropriate for her to corner you in your apartment. I spoke with her and she will never do anything like that again,” Lord Watson announced, he looked worried she’d hate. Daniel didn’t blame the man, he finally got his daughter back and his wife was causing problems.

“All water under the bridge. I am excited to see your home this weekend. I’ve always loved the ocean,” she replied, Daniel beamed with pride, his mate knew just what to say to appease others.

“You will love it. I am having your old room prepared, although with some updates to accommodate you and your mate,” Lord Watson replied. Amelia gave him a soft smile. Daniel watched Mr. Daily the museum director head in their direction.

“Prince Daniel, Lady Amelia, I would like to introduce you to our interior designer,” Mr. Daily said once he finished bowing hello. Daniel heard Amelia’s sigh and he looked down at her.

“Do you know the designer?” he whispered and she shrugged.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I met her about twenty minutes ago. She was not very polite to me. I don’t think she knew exactly who I was,” she replied with a rueful smile. Daniel chuckled and whispered back,

“Just watch.”

“Ms. Yolanda Adams I would like to formally introduce you to Alpha Prince Daniel and his mate Lady Amelia Byrne.” Mr. Daily motioned to each of them, Daniel watched as Yolanda’s eyes widened in shock then a blush of embarrassment came over her face.

“We met earlier,” Amelia commented and Mr. Daily turned a stern eye onto the young woman. Yolanda was a beauty, she had sleek dark brown hair, bright blue eyes, and was the perfect hourglass shape. Not someone Daniel would have gone after, but classically she was beautiful.

“You did a wonderful job designing the exhibits. I take it you had a team?” Amelia continued ignoring the awkward tension in the air.

“I did. I made the final approvals, but I had teams for each part of the museum,” Yolanda explained in a shaky voice. Daniel could tell Amelia not bringing up her rudeness earlier was bothering Yolanda.

“They did a wonderful job. I hope you convey our compliments to the appropriate people,” Daniel added, Yolanda gave him a shy smile.

“I want to apologize for my rude behavior,” Yolanda blurted out. Daniel raised an eyebrow letting Amelia answer.

“Just remember it in the future. There is no reason to snub anyone. Try to get to know them first,” Amelia replied squeezing his arm. He looked down at her and caught the pained look in her eyes. It occurred to him she never wore heels, her feet must be killing her.

“If you would excuse us, we have another engagement after this one.” Daniel gave Mr. Daily and Yolanda both a nod. They bowed and he turned Amelia away. Catching Nick and Alex’s eyes he motioned it was time to go. They had devised a secret signal that wouldn’t be noticeable to the people around them. Within five minutes they were back in the car they’d taken to go back to the palace. Amelia immediately took off her shoes and he saw the bright red marks on her feet. Without a word he picked up her foot and tucked it in his lap rubbing on the red marks. Her moan of pleasure awoke another part of his anatomy.

“How did you know?” she asked after a few minutes of enjoying his touch.

“I could see the pain in your eyes. You were amazing today. The press loved you, and so did everyone you spoke to.” Daniel kissed the top of her foot rubbing up her calf. She let out a soft moan.

“How many of these types of things do you go to?” she asked, giving him her other foot to rub.

“I think I attend a gathering of this type of thing once a week. Sometimes it is a charity event, a movie premiere or an opening of a public building. I am busier in the summer than in the winter,” he explained watching her eyes widen.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up with my cookie business if I have to attend these things all the time,” she remarked, he sensed her sadness.

“We can carve out time,” he assured her, he didn’t want her to lose part of herself.

“I suppose,” she replied. Daniel didn’t like seeing the sadness in her eyes. Bending down he kissed her gently on the lips.

“I will make sure you have time. We want to focus on your charity, that means working on cookies. You have trained Ramon, and I am sure we can find others who you can teach to design cookies. We will have an entire crew of people making cookies, you alongside them.”

“I love you. You always know what is bothering me without me having to voice it,” she replied, catching his lips in a passionate kiss.

“I love you too. Of course, I know when something is bothering you. You are my mate. When we get back, you can start on your cookies. Next week we have a meeting with my lawyers to help set up the charity. We want to announce your charity soon, which will help the public get to know you and your background. I don’t want to hide what you went through as a child. It made you who you are today,” he explained. Amelia chuckled and pushed him off her.

“Thank you.”

“Anything for you.” Daniel pulled her close to his side snuggling her until they returned to the palace. He frowned when Nick reminded him of several meetings he had that afternoon. Leaving Amelia was not something he wanted to do, but he had to continue to work. Kissing her once more he left her to work on her cookies while he went to shuffle through paperwork he'd left for later.
