The next morning, Amelia fidgeted with the hem of her dress while she waited for Prince Daniel. Kylie had been awake all night finishing the sundress. Amelia couldn’t believe how amazing she felt in it. The dress fit her perfectly. She’d laid awake most of the night, her wolf giving her no peace.
He is our mate!
How can you know? He is royalty, and we’re not; she argued. If wolves could roll their eyes, her wolf would have.
Don’t deny me our mate. Amelia sighed, her wolf was right, but she was petrified of being a horrible mate and mother. Her family hadn’t wanted her, they left her at an orphanage.
“Amelia stop worrying,” Kylie groaned, leaning on the wooden kitchen table, a cup of coffee in her hand. She hadn’t gone to bed yet because she helped Amelia straighten her hair and do light makeup.
“I can’t help it. Prince Daniel, the man who will be king, is taking me on a date. I’m no one special and yet he won’t leave me be,” she replied sipping her own coffee.
“Because you are mates. Who cares where you come from. Although, if you really care, I bet he could help you trace your history. They have those DNA kits now that connect you to others,” Kylie offered and Amelia sighed.
“I hate to do it and find out I’m not worthy of Prince Daniel,” she admitted and Kylie gave her a half-smile.
“Or you find out you are the long lost descendant of some royal line,” Kylie joked and Amelia found her first laugh.
“That would be too much,” Amelia laughed and Kylie let out a tired giggle.
“Go to bed Kylie, the prince will be here soon,” she told her friend.
“No, he needs to know I’m super protective and I’ll hurt him if he hurts you. I don’t care if he is the prince,” she shared and Amelia shook her head. A knock sounded on the door and Amelia jumped. He was here! Taking her time she walked over to the door and opened it to see Prince Daniel, his bodyguard from last night, and a third gentleman.
“Good morning Amelia,” Daniel greeted her and a shiver went down her spine. He was dressed in khaki shorts and a blue polo shirt.
“Good morning, Your Highness,” she replied, dipping a curtsey.
“Just Daniel,” he told her and she looked up into his deep hazel eyes looking for confirmation he meant for her to be so informal with him.
Just kiss him! Ignoring her wolf she grabbed her purse and a light jacket just in case.
“Kylie I’m leaving,” Amelia announced and turned to see Kylie staring at the other man with the prince. Amelia looked between the two and knew what was happening because it had happened to her yesterday.
“May I introduce my roommate and best friend Kylie Longfellow,” she said and the prince nodded his head in greeting.
“Nice to meet a friend of Amelia’s,” Prince Daniel said, holding out a hand for her to shake. A growl emitted from the third man’s chest when their hands touched.
“This is Alex, my head bodyguard and Nick my beta,” Daniel introduced the two men with him. Kylie and Nick hadn’t taken their eyes off of each other.
“Are you the one who canceled on our date twice?” Nick finally asked and Amelia’s eyes went wide. Kylie nodded and before Amelia could stop her she stepped through the door and threw herself into Nick’s arms. Their lips collided and Amelia looked away giving them a moment of privacy.
“Would you go on a date with me?” Prince Daniel asked and Amelia looked up in surprise.
“I thought we were already going on a date?” she replied and he gave her a panty wetting smile.
“I was a jerk yesterday demanding you go out with me. I’d like to take you out and show you that I want you. I explained it badly yesterday, I wanted to make up for the frown on my face after I kissed you. I enjoyed the kiss,” he explained and she stared in shock.
“Okay,” was all she could think to say. The crown prince was interested in her. He gave her a big smile and cleared his throat at Nick and Kylie. Nick released Kylie and said,
“After their date, I’m coming for you.” Amelia laughed when Kylie blushed deep red and nodded her agreement.
“Say your goodbye and we’ll meet you at the cars,” Prince Daniel told them and offering Amelia his hand, she took it. He walked her down her rickety steps. She didn’t like where they lived, it never made her feel safe but she couldn’t afford better.
“Where are we going?” she asked when they got to his sleek black sports car. She knew very little about cars, but his oozed luxury.
“How do you feel about the beach?” he asked and she detected a hint of apprehension in his voice.
“I love it, but I’ve been super busy with my company to go very often. I think it has been over two years since I’ve gone,” she replied, he rewarded her with a bright smile and opened the passenger door for her. She smiled back and to her delight, he placed a light kiss to her lips before helping her into the low car. She settled and buckled taking the moment she was alone to calm her breathing. Prince Daniel gave her butterflies whenever he gave her his full attention. He slipped in the other side and she watched Alex and Nick get into another sports car, this one bright red.
“They aren’t coming in your car?” she asked looking at the tight back seat.
“No, I want this to be just us. So Amelia, tell me about you,” he said and she froze. What did she start with?
“How about twenty questions?” she offered not sure what he wanted to know about her.
“Okay, I’ll start with an easy one. Favorite color?” he replied with a chuckle, his hand resting on her thigh, she had to take a moment to focus on his question. Tentatively she placed her small hand on his large one.
“I like sky blue, yours?”
“Navy blue. Any hobbies?” His hand turned so they were palm to palm. Her heart raced but she did her best to keep her voice steady.
“I like to read, dance, sing, and obviously bake. You?”
“Cars, read, any sport. How did you get into gourmet cookies?” She watched him drive them out of her small town and onto the highway headed for the beach.
“When I was eighteen I took a job as a waitress to pay for school. I knew I wanted to bake but wasn’t sure what I wanted to specialize in. Well, the cookie unit came up and I found I have a knack for creating new flavors. That turned into using all my decorating techniques to create decorative cookies. I can do wedding cakes and cupcakes, but I like cookies best,” she explained and he gave her a smile.
“What books do you read?” she asked, turning the conversation back on him.
“I like a good mystery and science fiction. You?”
“Romance and mysteries mostly. I like the ones from a female detective’s point of view,” she answered and turned to see the beach coming up. The closest beach was only thirty minutes from her apartment.
“What are we doing first?” she asked when he parked near the boardwalk. It was ten-thirty and the boardwalk shops were just starting to open.
