Chapter 12

At first, when I woke up, before I opened my eyes, I had a moment where I was sure I was at home, in my little two-bedroom terrace in the Lake District. But when I took in a deep breath of the clean fresh air, and I felt the comfort of the huge bed beneath me, I smiled at the realization that I was very far from that old life.

I stretched my body, spreading out over the massive bed, and let out a long moan. I didn’t want to get up. I could stay in this bed forever. If only there was someone to share it with. It's kinda lonely in such a big bed by myself.

I turned on my back and closed my eyes.

No rush to go anywhere. No work, no bills, nothing to worry about.

I was just falling back asleep when an annoying melody sounded. Is that coming from my ear?

I groaned loudly and slammed my hands on the bed.

“Shut up!” I shouted when the noise didn’t stop.

“Ash?” Connie’s voice sounded, and I frowned.

“Con? Where are you?”

“In bed still. Just checking in to see how you slept.”

I let out a long, satisfied breath, “Ahh, so good. This bed is amazing! I don’t want to get up.”

She laughed, “I know right! Raylon’s bed is the same. It's huge, and it’s so comfy.”

“Like you do a lot of sleeping in that bed with him,” I said and heard her laugh.

“We do a bit of sleeping. And just so you know, these beds are pretty good for that too.”

I rolled my eyes, “I wouldn’t know. So where is Raylon anyway? Is he listening to you tell me all this?”

“No, he had to go. He has a pretty busy day today, I won’t see him till tonight again.”

“Ahh, you poor thing. Whatever will you do with all this free time? If only you had a friend to spend it with.”

“If only,” She said and we both laughed, “So are we going exploring today?”

“Yeah,” I said and got off the bed reluctantly, “I’m gonna go soak in that gorgeous bath I have in my room, and we can go. Meet you at breakfast?”

“Sure.” She said and the connection ended. I walked over to the bathroom and stared at the little screen on the edge of the bath.

What the hell does any of this say, I thought, looking at the little squiggles of writing on the display. I pressed one button and the lights turned off.

“That’s not it,” I said to myself and pressed it again to get the lights back on.

I pressed the next one and waited. I looked around the room, but nothing happened.

I pressed the next one and a waterfall of water came falling down from the ceiling. I smiled and stood. I put my fingers into the water to feel the temperature.

“Perfect,” I said with a smile and went back to my room to get some clothes. I looked around for a towel, but I didn’t see anything that even resembled one.

I went back to the bathroom and searched in there, but nothing.

“Great! Looks like I have to drip dry.”

I felt the water in the bath and when it was full enough, I pressed the same button and the waterfall stopped. I descended the stairs and lay back to float on the surface.

Who would have ever thought this would be my life?

When I finally tore myself away from the water, I got out and went to the bedroom. My clothes for the day laid out on my bed. A simple pair of jeans, a black tank top, and trainers. If we were going exploring in the palace, I wanted comfy clothes on.

I stood in the middle of the room, dripping wet and butt naked, and put my hands on my hips.

This is going to take a while.
