Chapter Fourteen

They sat on the bed in the dingy hotel room looking at the screen both trying to process what they were reading. Mitsuhide had sat behind her and read over her shoulder. Though it was a place, he knew she hated it and doing a thing she would normally yell at him for she was oddly silent when he was in that spot. She turned every so often to glance at his face as he was reading or deep in thought. The drive itself had the information she had been told earlier that morning by the ‘director’ of the agency which still rocked her to the toes as to who that was. The file that she had seen was not this in-depth but was close. They had possible suspects listed but as of whenever this copied no viable leads to the who on either side. That was slightly disappointing.

“This is what you knew at the parking lot?”, Mitsuhide finally asked.

“Yes.”, she replied. “A little less but yes.”

“Who told you?”, Mitsuhide asked.

“I was brought to a parking garage. I really didn’t pay attention to where I was going through, I knew I should have, then we stopped, and the ‘Director’ was there.”, she replied.

“Who?”, he asked.

“That is what they called the person. The ‘director.’” She replied.

“Why do I have the feeling you know this ‘director’?” he asked.

“I do. But that is not the point. They went over the whole thing basically warning me that I needed to continue on what I was doing even though they knew that this was going on.”, she said.

“And then the building blew up.”, Mitsuhide said.

“And then the building blew up.”, she nodded as she spoke.

“Your take on it does seem to make more sense. Your base is in the woods basically. Too many places you could hide probably for weeks depending on the size of the team. Ours is more open and no cover. I don’t like that you are the fox in this hunt.”, Mitsuhide stated.

“Neither do I but it seems for the moment I am. You have to admit using my name as the contact for selling the secrets is almost a brilliant plan.”, she said.

“Almost?”, he asked.

“I don’t have many contacts in the state department, or I thought I didn’t. I wouldn’t know what they were doing or what info they had. I am high profile enough that people know my name in certain circles, but I don’t often care what the other acronyms are doing.”, she replied.

“It does seem diabolical in a way.”, Mitsuhide countered.

“They certainly didn’t do their research though. That much is plain to see.”, Kit stated.

“How so, my dear?”, Mitsuhide asked.

“Well, the ‘Director’ connection for one. If they really looked, they would have seen the context of the relationship. Anyone could have seen that connection. The other major one is you. Apparently, everyone on the planet knew about us before we did, Mitsuhide. Having a green team military member at your six makes you almost invincible.”, she replied.

“So, they didn’t do their research.”, Mitsuhide nodded.

“It looks like they just picked me for whatever reason.”, she said. “Maybe it is revenge for something but who knows. Basically, if the first connection wasn’t there, I would probably be facing treason charges or worse.”

“I don’t like either option.”, he said.

“This time everyone knows it is a false name.”, she said.

“This time?”, Mitsuhide asked.

“In the grand scheme of things, this isn’t new, this whole sell information and what not. This one time everyone knows it isn’t me except the people who bought the secrets.”, she said as a look of her thinking to over her features.

“What?”, he asked.

She shook her head, “It doesn’t make any sense.”

“What doesn’t?”, Mitsuhide who was trying to keep up with her thought process. He was quick on his feet and often was the intel officer for his unit, but he knew she could process information faster and come about the same conclusions.

“Why would they warn me?”, she asked.

“Who?”, Mitsuhide asked.

“The ‘Director.’ They know I am not the one who sold the secrets but why actually tell me about it.”, she stated.

“Kit what is your connection to them?”, he asked.

“It’s personal.”, she replied. “Ignore it for a minute though.”

“I can’t ignore it.”, he stated.

“Why not, I did?”, kit replied.

“Because it is a part of this don’t you think?”, he asked.

“Mitsuhide I don’t want to talk about how I know them. If anything, I think that may the reason I am in this, to begin with.”, she said as she sighed. “I can’t help but wonder if it was them in the first place.”

“What? Why would you think that?”, Mitsuhide asked now surprised.

“Because of the relationship in the first place.”, She said with a sigh. “I have to wonder their motives. I have to question everything Mitsuhide.”

“Who are they?”, Mitsuhide asked again.

“I can’t say.”, she said. “Look I want someone to look at this unbiasedly. That would have to be you. If you knew the relationship, I had with the ‘director’ it would completely bias your way of thinking. Trust me on this.”

“I do trust you, but I don’t like you having secrets and the way you are talking it almost sounds like it is an ex or something.”, Mitsuhide said. Kit laughed and started shaking her head.

“I don’t like keeping anything from you. I promise as soon as I can I will tell you, but this isn’t an ex or anything like that I assure you.”, Kit said as she turned to face him.

“As long as you promise that. I will try.”, Mitsuhide said.

“Mitsuhide, I do. I will tell you that small detail as soon as I place the last few pieces. I need you to look at them though and their actions right now.”, Kit said as she cupped his cheek with her small hand.

“When you do that it makes it hard to think about anything but you.”, He whispered.

“Well. We have been at this enough for now.”, She said softly. He had been waiting for that as he moved the laptop off the bed and in the process knocked her over to a laying position. He climbed over her.

“Good girl.”, he whispered as he kissed her hard.

It was still daytime as she opened her eyes and remembered where she was and who she was with. She smiled to herself as she snuggled back deeper into his arms and closed her eyes again.

“What is that for, my love?”, he asked as he hooked his finger under her chin raising her face up so he could look at it.

“What?”, she asked as her eyelids fluttered open to stare into those golden orbs of his.

“That smile.”, he said with a lopsided grin that made her heart beat faster.

“I was thinking of you.”, she said softly.

“And that made you smile like that?”, he asked.

“Yeah.”, She replied as she sighed and let her eyes close again. Moving her head to place on his chest.

“Then think of me more, princess.”, he said. “I love that smile.”

“Why cause you’re the cause of it?”, she asked.

“Something like that.”, he said as he tangled his fingers through her hair. “When did you cut it?”

“What?”, she asked.

“Your hair, when did you cut it?”, Mitsuhide asked.

“A few months ago, why?”, she asked.

“I didn’t notice until last week.”, he said.

“I do normally wear my hair up.”, she replied.

“Kit, I have noticed everything about you since the day you got out of that jeep in the Congo. Every little detail, somehow I didn’t notice your hair.”, Mitsuhide said.

“You sound disappointed.”, she stated.

“I am slightly, only with myself though.”, he replied.

“It’s only hair.”, she said.

“I missed a tiny detail, my love. That either means I am slipping, or I neglected to see it.”, he replied.

“Or neither of those things. Mitsuhide I think we were both on a collision course with this being the end result. The smaller details were probably becoming a blur because we were both too frustrated to see them.”, Kit said as she rolled over to look at him.

“I could see that.”, he said. “Wait. What if that is true for everything?”

“What?”, she asked as she watched his mind ponder things in rapid secession.

“What if we were too preoccupied with each other that we didn’t see the little details surrounding this. I didn’t notice your hair, for example, Kit I love your hair. I always have. It was the one thing about you that seemed safe to admit that I liked.”, He stated, “So if I missed that and you missed something as well. Maybe that played into the person, or persons plan that they could do this and get away with it.”

“I think you are right, Mitsuhide. Everyone in the world seemed to know that we were occupied dealing with our own feelings for each other and trying to hide them from each other that the two people who would have seen something out of the norm would be distracted. That is why this all came crashing down now. They know we are together now. No more distraction of that kind anymore. If they slip up now, we would see it.”, She said as he nodded.

“The ‘Director’?” he asked.

“Can’t be. They had no idea when I told them. They knew about you not that I was with you.”, she said. “They had been trying to find me all weekend.”

“Well, that is good.”, Mitsuhide replied.

“Yes and no.”, she stated.

“Why?”, he asked.

“Because they know now.”, she said, and he still didn’t get the connection. “Mitsuhide they know we are together now.”

“Okay, so?”, he asked.

“Think about how many people know.”, she said.

“Oh shit.”, he replied.

“Exactly.”, she said.

“It can’t be.”, he said shaking his head.

“It has to be.”, she said.

“Kit it really can’t be.”, he said again.

“Mitsuhide. It is.”, she said.

“Kit, it isn’t possible.”, Mitsuhide said. “No one from my team would dare.”

“I didn’t think it was your team, Mitsuhide.”, she said as he blew out the air he had been holding in.

“Good. Then who?”, he asked.

“The who is unclear but someone here. Someone close, who can see us but they are still in the shadows somewhere.”, she said.

“That leaves to many people.”, he said.

“However, they had to be at the club on Friday night.”, she said. “Everything changed Friday night, Mitsuhide. Everything.”, she said.

“So, we have a day and a place.”, he said. “Can we bring my team in on this?”

“I think we have too. Mitsuhide I know you trust them, I do as well.”, she said. “We were too busy on ourselves to notice anything around us. Hopefully, they did.”

“I know. Once I saw you, I couldn’t take my eyes off of you. I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.”, Mitsuhide stated.

“I was too drunk.”, she said laughing.

“So, should we bring in your team as well?”, Mitsuhide asked.

“No.,” she replied quick and hard. “I hate to say it, but though we work together, we don’t have the same type of bond that you guys do.”

“I understand that.”, Mitsuhide responded, “We are lucky because we all stayed together for so long.”

“Exactly.”, she said. “I just don’t like the timing of everything.”

“I don’t like it one bit.”, Mitsuhide said as he snuggled into the bed by pulling her closer.

“It is rather scary when I think about it.”, she said as she put her head down on his chest again as his arm tightened around her body.

“What is, my love?”, he asked.

“The fact Mitsuhide it is someone we know, who has been watching us for a while now.”, she said. “Now I am really glad I choose this place. No one would find us here.”

“Why did you choose this place?”, Mitsuhide asked. “You hated it when you came to help me out with the house.”

“That was why I hated it, Mitsuhide.”, she said giggling.

“What?”, he asked.

“This was the place I could finally put everything together. How I felt about you, it was when I was helping with the house that I realized that I didn’t want to be just your friend Mitsu. I took it out on the hotel because I couldn’t actually voice how I felt.”

“Then this is the perfect place for us to be.”, he said with a smile.

“Now to find the person who caused us to be here.”, she said.
