Or at least that's how Mum explained it. All I know is once a month, I need a hot water bottle against my tummy. An endless supply of chocolate doesn't hurt either, while I spend four or five days hating the world. Mum says I'm a walking cliche. I tell her to sod off. Hidden away in an attic, an ornate box sits, housing letters spanning a lifetime. Labelled simply, 'Dear Annie', the wonderful life of Annie Baines unfolds. Scribbles from her childhood become the thoughtful musings of a young woman and the memories of an old lady. Every year of her life is detailed in an individual letter, describing incredible highs and tragic lows. Brutally honest, Annie pulls no punches as she shares her story. In a world that is often cruel, can Annie hold it together for the sake of her loved ones?

Dear Annie,

Happy birthday!

Today in class, we learned about time capsules.

Miss Swan said that we were all to bring in something that would tell everyone in the future about our lives. I’ve decided I will bring in Sophie the rabbit because Jenny says I’m getting too old for teddies. I’m not sure she’s right, but just in case, I’m putting her in the time capsule.

Miss Swan said that in a hundred years, or even longer, someone will discover our capsule and open it up to learn about us.

Isn’t that cool?

Although I’m not so sure what makes us special. If I were opening a capsule, I would want it to be from someone important like Mayor Joe or Santa. Miss said we were making history, and that was what counted. It made me think about my history. I can’t really remember anything past last week. So I am writing to you so that on your birthday you will remember today and remember Sophie because I wouldn’t want to forget her.

Happy birthday,

Love Annie.
