She traced his face with her fingers, frowning at her handsome mate.

"Aren't you supposed to be back at the office by now? "

Their sinful pleasure ended a while ago, leaving them cuddling and talking in bed. She was enjoying the attention she got from him. She liked having him all to herself but she knew it was too good to be true. She knew his alpha to-do list were piling up after their trip.

Grey's eyes flashed orange before giving her a reply.

"Babe, I told you that I can stay longer."

Her frown deepened. She noticed that his wolf was making reappearances especially when she brought up going back to his duties. It was very unusual and irking but she ignored it at first.

"No, you should go. Besides, I'll be seeing you again tonight. " She pecked his lips and slowly left the bed. Bending down, she picked her clothes up and dressed herself.

"Why does it feel like you're pushing me away?" He followed her lead and started dressing himself too.

She was surprised how he even offered staying longer, not that she didn't want him to. The pack always came first, so why was he so keen about staying at home?

"Babe." She took his hand and led him out of the room, "You really need to go. The pack needs you."

"And you don't?" He pouted at her, his eyes glowing orange again.

"Stop that." She reprimanded him and pinched his cheeks.

"Stop what?" His brows met, genuinely curious about what she meant.

Her lips parted in an attempt to tell him that his control was slipping but she ended up closing it. Her head tilted in thought, her eyes squinted at him in observation. He was ridiculously acting like a teenage boy who just newly shifted. It was alarming.

"You know, when you look at me like that I wish I could just hear your thoughts." A frown plastered on his face.

Xam giggled and pushed him towards the door.

"You should really go. I'll be cooking dinner in a few hours."

"You won't be doing anything." He grabbed her wrist and tightened his grip.

She gave him a chuckle as she tugged her hand from his hold. He was just so playful sometimes. When he wouldn't release her, she mirrored his pout.

"Babe, be serious. Can you let go of me?" She was starting to think that this wasn't being playful at all, noticing that his canines were starting to show.

It baffled her how fast he changed moods. Just a moment ago they were literally screwing each other and talking about the littlest things. He was sweet and a tease. Now, he sounded like a bossy egotistical alpha who gets all his commands done.

"Babe, you're hurting me." She whimpered.

Just like that, he was back to normal. At first, he looked like he just snapped out of a daze and shook his head. He looked at her hand in his and noticed her wrist was red. His eyes widened in horror.

"Kitty, I'm sorry." He looked at his own hand, disbelieving that he had managed to hurt her.

Worry was evident in her face. Did he really lost control just now? She stood there in silence, gathering up her jumbled thoughts, trying to make sense of what just happened.

"I'm really sorry." He looked broken because of his actions. It was obvious he regretted it.

"I'm fine, alpha. I'm a big girl." She gave him a smile.

"No, we should go to the pack doctor. We'll get you checked and--"

"Babe, I'm okay."

"But I just hurt you."

"You didn't mean it and I'm not arguing with you anymore. Either you leave me in the house or if you don't want that, just take me with you to work because I'm very able and fine." She rolled her eyes and waved her hands up in the air for emphasis.

What was with him and doctors? He just overreact sometimes but she honestly thinks he just cares for her.

He laughed at her antics and sweeped her in his arms in one swift move. She shrieked which made his chest rumble, emitting another round of laughter.

"Put me down!" Her arms encircled themselves around his neck as he started running, "Babe!"

They passed by pack members who looked at them as they laughed and bickered along the way yet she paid no care. To her, everything was slowly falling into place.

She had a sweet and loving mate who accepted her wolf. Her family showed her how much they loved her. Pack members from the different pack houses made it clear that they fancy her. The Moon Goddess was really spoiling her with good fortune.

When they arrived infront of the office, Grey slowly set her back on her feet. She was going to whine about how he could have just carried her in like a clingy mate she was, but his posture suddenly became stiff and his eyes scanned around the area.

He was searching for a prey. She mimicked him but picked up nothing that could be a sign of threat.

"What is it?" She grab a fistful of his shirt and instinctively stuck nearer to him.

"Nothing." He said, placing an arm around her waist, "I just felt someone watching."

"Are you sure? How could they have gone past the borders and patrols? " She swallowed the lump in her throat.

She just couldn't believe how she jinxed their near-to-perfect life. Maybe he was just slipping from his control again but he looked deadly serious.

He scanned the area once more and listened to any rustling sound. His mate was right, they couldn't have infiltrated the pack so easily, so why was his wolf so attentive?

"Maybe it's just a deer?" Xam's tiny voice suggested. He could feel her going paranoid through the bond.

"Maybe." He nodded and kissed her mark, "I'll have Matt check it out just to be sure. Let's go inside."

She smiled and hugged him before heading in. Just as he was about to step inside, the sound of metal clanking together caught his ears. Whipping his head, his wolf's eyes traced the direction of where the sound originated but saw nothing.

Matt, I want you patrolling the area now, he commanded through the link.

What's wrong, alpha?

I just want to make sure nothing out there is lurking. While you're at it, I want you to submit to me a new schedule for patrols.

Understood, his beta replied.

"Are you just gonna stand there?" His little mate was giving him a questioning look.

"Sorry, I was just linking Matteo."

He closed the door and took a seat on his leather office chair. Xam found it comfortable to sit herself on his lap and watch him move his arms to stack and sign papers piled up on his desk.

"You're so tense." She commented.

He released a breath and burried his head on her neck. He took a large sniff at her scent before continuing his task.

"That's it. Relax, everything is fine." She soothed him.

He hoped she was right.
