Chapter Twenty-Three

Thanksgiving break and Christmas break had come and gone as quickly as they came. Now we were towards the end of the school year and I was a little sad about it because I was going to miss my babies this year, but that’s all a part of being a teacher. My kids have to move on at some point, then I’ll have a new crop of young minds to mold to perfection with all the knowledge I can pour into them.

Aside from the school year coming to a close in a couple of months, I was worried about this field trip for tomorrow because we were spending the night at the aquarium with the students. This was my third year teaching and my third year leading a field trip, but I was nervous about screwing it up completely. My other two field trips have gone successfully, but I still didn’t want to leave room for error. My worry was a little heightened because of the fact that we have chaperones as well. I definitely didn’t want to make any mistakes while my student’s parents were there.

“Still worried about the trip?” August questioned.

“A little,” I nodded.

His hand wrapped around mine and he gave it a gentle squeeze, “Don’t worry. You’ll do great.”

“I’m glad that you’re coming with us,” I smiled softly.

“Me too. It’ll be nice to sleep at the aquarium with my two best girls.”

He placed a gentle kiss onto my forehead and wrapped his arms around me. I leaned into his embrace with a smile.

“We’ll have to keep it strictly professional though.”

The downside to the trip is that I can’t share a sleeping bag with him during this trip. He felt the same way, but we both had a mutual understanding of how that would look in the eyes of the other parents. This made it harder for me and I hated it so much, but my educational career came first. I’m not about to deal with some parent getting upset with me and implying that I’m giving Mischa “special0 treatment because I’m dating her father. I’m not the type of person to do that no matter if I like the student’s parent enough. August understand and Mischa does too.

“Did you pack any snacks for Mischa? It’s going to be a long night,” I said.

“Yeah. We bought some snacks, but I got some for everybody in the class to have as much as they want,” he responded. My eyes widened at this information. Was this man an angel from heaven?

“Did you really?” I asked.

“Yep. It’s sitting in the trunk right now,” he answered.

“I can see a halo floating above your head,” I said. He laughed softly.

“I’m glad you think that I’m an angel, but I see it as spoiling a bunch of kids with junk food,” he replied.

“Gosh. What did you buy?” I asked.

“Three bags of the variety pack of chips, candy that’s nut free, caprisuns, Welch’s fruit gummies, and water too.”

“Wow. Most of our parents will be happy to have you on their good side.”

He snickered, “Or on their bad side when they get a load of what I bought.”

“I’m just so happy that you bought this stuff. I know a certain little boy that will be extremely happy.”

“You mean E.J.?”

“I’ve got a special snack in store for him.”

“You do? What is it?”

“You’ll see later on. Okay?”

“What time do you guys load the buses?”

“In two hours. We’re giving the parents enough time to go home, pack their children’s bags, and then come back to load the buses. Those who don’t make it in time will meet us there and I’ve got a list of names too with those who already have their things.”

“You have everything under control. Why are you so nervous again?”

“Because I don’t want to fuck this up. This is my third year teaching so far and the third field trip I’ve been on. My last two were successful, but I don’t want to leave room for error if you get what I mean. Oh. I might sound crazy to you.”

“No, no, no. You don’t. In fact, it’s a valid concern that you have. You’ve been teaching for three years so far and you don’t want to mess this up at any cost. I understand why you’re nervous and I don’t think you’re crazy at all. You can never sound crazy to me, especially when you’re expressing yourself like this.”

“Has anybody ever told you that you’re a very understanding and empathetic man?”

“A couple times,” he smiled softly.

“Thank you, August. I really needed to hear that.”

“You’re welcome, Em.”

He kissed me softly on the cheek.

“There’s one thing I’ve been wondering for a while now to be honest.”

“Oh? What could you be wondering about?”

“About the kind of pajamas you’d wear to this. Now, I know that it can’t be sexy like that t-shirt you love to wear or those little shorts that ride up every single time you move.”

This man was trying to torture me before we went on this trip. He’s a sick man for that. A very sick man for it, but I love it.

A coy spread across my lips, “Mr. Flores, are you asking me about what I’m going to be wearing for bed tonight?”

“I’m guilty as charged, Miss King,” he smiled.

“Mr. Flores, you are aware that this isn’t appropriate behavior befitting of a student?”

“Miss King, I’m only asking an innocent question.”

“Innocent is not in your vocabulary one bit.”

“I apologize, Miss King. I’ve been a bad student,” he leaned his face closer to mine.

“You most certainly have,” I agreed, moving mine just an inch in front of his.

“And I think I need detention after school to reflect on my actions.”

“You’ve read my mind, Mr. Flores. Detention at my home. Be there or else.”

His lips were a mere inch from mine when he whispered, “Yes, Miss King.”

Our lips met in a passionate kiss that left me wanting more. If we weren’t at the school, I’d pounce on this man at any chance I got. Thankfully, my students were in Caroline’s room for a little movie before we left.

We pulled away at the sound of Caroline clearing her throat in the doorway. She smirked as she walked into the room.

“You guys know that you’re on school property right?” Caroline teased. That made my face heat up and August laugh.

“Miss King, I’ll be seeing you in a little while. I’m gonna go pop in on Mischa,” he informed me.

“Okay, Mr. Flores,” I smiled softly. He walked past Caroline who just gave him a knowing grin. Gosh. These two were just alike at times that I couldn’t stand it at all.

“I kind of heard the little teacher-student you guys were doing. It was kind of cute to be honest,” she laughed.

“Oh God. Shut up,” I grumbled.

“I told you that it would happen one day, but you didn’t listen to me,” she said.

“Hush. You can gloat later, okay?”

“Fine, fine. I’ll gloat later and I’ll enjoy it with every fiber of my being.”

“Geez. You ladies still here after school?” Alex asked, walking into my room.

“Yeah. We’ve got a field trip, remember?”

“Ahh yes. The overnight stay at the aquarium and tour as well,” he nodded.

“That’s the one.”

“Hope you ladies have fun seeing all those sea creatures,” the gym teacher said.

“Thanks, Alex. What are your plans for this weekend?”

“Your cousin and I have a date tonight.”

“Oh congratulations. I’m so excited for you two.”

“This is like the hundredth one in a row. Are you two about to make it official?”

“It’s already official for your information,” Alex told her.

“Just asking. You know how you men these days are. Dates aren’t a real thing anymore and most of you don’t want to pay either way.”

“She has a point to be honest, but you’re not like that in the slightest, Alex.”

“No I am not,” he proudly proclaimed.

A sickly sweet smile formed on my features, “Besides, me and my female cousins would stomp him like a bug if he dared tried that.”

Alex gulped loudly while Caroline shuddered visibly.

“She’s right. My college boyfriend cheated on me and she beat the crap out of him without any remorse. He went to the hospital and when the police asked what happened, he couldn’t tell them out of fear for her. Better treat her cousin right or else you’ll end up like that guy.”

“Not to mention that her friends are some crazy bitches too.”

“Suddenly, I’m scared,” he responded. That made Caroline and I laugh while he chuckled nervously. We talked some more with Alex before he left and then finished up preparing for the trip.

Once everything was prepared and all of our students were here, we loaded everything onto the buses, did a head count, called parents that were driving to the aquarium, and made sure that everybody had used the bathroom. Before the bus pulled off, I stood up and faced my students.

“Okay, guys. Here’s the rules of the bus before we pull off!” I announced. All of their attention was now on me.

“You will not act a monkey at this aquarium because I will call your parents to come pick you up or, for those whose parents are chaperoning the trip, tell them exactly what is going on and have them deal with you themselves. You will act accordingly and you will not sit here and act a fool. Am I clear?” I explained.

“Yes, Miss King,” they all obediently responded.

“And another thing, I don’t mind talking on the bus because it’s kind of, and please excuse my language, stupid to do that. You can talk, but don’t get too loud or don’t start yelling either. You can listen to music on your devices, play games, the works. Just don’t get loud.

Another thing as well, I know some of you have switches and whatnot, but be very respectful when playing with each other. I better not hear about somebody messing up somebody’s island or somebody’s character at all. Play nice or don’t play at all and absolutely no foul language either, but I know that y’all aren’t like that all. Understand?”

“Yes, Miss King.”

“Good. Now, we’re gonna have an enjoyable bus ride from this point on. So just enjoy the ride and have fun!”

The kids cheered for a couple minutes before settling down again. The bus driver started pulling off from the school and the others followed.

When we arrived at the aquarium, I made sure to ask the kids stand right in front of the bus so we could keep track of them. They all complied and stood with their bags on their shoulders.

“Alright. I’m gonna take roll so you guys better be loud so I can hear you. Okay?” I said.

“Yes, Ms. King,” they responded.

“Alright. Bobby Ashton...”

The roll was finished moments later and we all headed inside the aquarium. One by one while i walked backwards to make sure that there weren’t any issues. We reached the lobby and I signaled for all of them to stop with a raise of my hand.

“Oi! We’re gonna go over the rules once again, okay?”

“Yes, Ms. King.”

“Once again, I’m gonna say this for all of you. Number one, don’t act a fool up in here. I’m not about to deal with you and if your parents are here as a chaperone, then that’s on you. Number two, I will not tolerate you guys leaving your trash and such all over the place or doing anything inappropriate at all because that’s not how we do it in this class.

And last but not least, be respectful to the guide. I know that it ties into the first rule, but you will show some respect to the employees here. Like me and your lovely science teacher here, they’re your teachers. You will listen to them, you will give them your undivided attention, and you will treat them the same way you treat us. Am I clear?”

“Good. Now talk amongst yourselves while I go and find your-”

As soon as I turned around, I was met with the sight of a nice and muscular chest.

“Oh my gosh. I am so sorry,” I said to the chest.

“It’s quite alright,” the owner of said chest assured me. My eyes traveled from the chest up to the face and I have to say that the face was very nice. The man before me was just my type. He was tall, muscular and thick at the same time, he had smooth brown skin, a short beard, dark brown eyes with long lashes, a flat nose, short black hair, and nice sized lips. He was very handsome.

“Em,” Caroline elbowed me.

A sheepish smile formed on my face, “S-sorry.”

“It’s fine. I’m Rashaad and I’m gonna be with you guys tonight for the sleepover,” he held out his hand.

“Nice to meet you, Rashaad,” I smiled softly, shaking his hand.

“Very nice to meet you,” Caroline flirtatiously smiled. What a big flirt.

“Nice to meet you both,” Rashaad laughed softly. We moved out of his way so he could give the class a speech. As soon as my eyes locked with a certain someone’s, my heart was in my stomach. Uh-oh. I’m in some deep shit.

“Good afternoon, everybody. My names is Rashaad and I’m one of the lead Aquarists here at the Aquarium. Tonight and tomorrow, I’ll be taking care of you guys and making sure that you get the full experience in front of the scenes and behind the scenes as well. Are you guys ready for a night of fun?” Rashaad asked.

“Awesome,” he gave them a dazzling smile, “Before we get started, we’re gonna have you guys bring your stuff to a secure place and once the doors close, then we’ll head on to our sleeping spot. Sounds good?”

“Yes,” the students responded.

“Awesome, awesome. Once your stuff has been put down, you guys can walk around the aquarium together, but make sure you have your badges on,” he instructed. Another employee walked over with a cart of badges.

“You guys can keep these once you leave here tomorrow, but make sure you don’t lose them for tonight.”

The other employee began handing out the badges to each and every single one of us.

“So, Ms. King. Are you excited for the tour?” Rashaad asked. Those eyes and that smile are dangerous.

“I am, but only because my students are. Hopefully, this tour exceeds their expectations,” I answered.

“I hope it exceeds theirs and yours as well.”

Is he-? No. Nope. Uh-uh. Nope. I’m not doing this. Caroline seemed to have caught on to what he was saying because she was smirking at me, which I was trying my best to ignore. August was right over there and he’s burning holes into the side of my face.

“Since everybody has their badges on, let’s go out our stuff down,” Rashaad informed them. One by one we all followed behind him and he engaged the students in some very educational talks about what his job entails and what he hopes to do in the future. They were taking it in as much as they could and even asking questions as well. EJ was the main one asking questions, which warmed my heart so much.

Once the students put their things down, we were lead back to the main part of the aquarium and Rashaad told us that he would come get us in two hours for dinner and then we would grab our things. We split up the kids in their assigned groups with their chaperones and teachers.

Luckily for me, I was in a group opposite of August and Mischa. It was great because my nerves were through the roof after that little moment with Rashaad where he caught me checking him out. He had something in store for me later and I was not looking forward to it at all.

Please let this field trip go by smoothly for me. I beg of you.
