”Mom, can I stay at Becca’s this weekend?”
”Did you ask her parents?”
”They said it was alright with them if it was alright with you and dad.”
”I don't have a problem with it.”
”Are you sure? I can stay home and help you with Liam and Stella.”
”Harlow, just go and have fun.”
It's hard to believe that Harlow is twelve now. She has been such a big help since Stella was born. Stella Analise is two months, and we have Liam Alexander, who is six. My hands have been full since Stella was born, and Harlow has been a lifesaver.
Luca works all the time, and when he's home, he’s mentally somewhere else, and I can't help but think something is going on, which is why I’ve planned a weekend get-away for next weekend. Will and Aubrey agreed to take Liam and Stella while Harlow will be staying with Luca’s parents.
I feel like Luca, and I have to find ourselves, we've been busy with the children and with the company we forgot about each other. I just have to tell him tonight that we have plans for next weekend.
It was just after midnight when Luca came home. He seemed startled to find me still awake.
”I just got done feeding Stella.”
Luca just nodded at me.
”Is everything alright?”
”Well, you're never home, and when you are you don't talk, you don't interact with the kids.”
”There’s just a lot going on with the company.”
”I understand that, but it's not an excuse to ignore us.”
”Can we not do this tonight?”
I could tell that Luca was getting very. I just didn't understand why.
”We need to talk about this; I feel like you're over it.”
Luca let out a sigh. ”I’m sorry, but as I said, I'm just overwhelmed with work.”
Luca briefly kissed me; it was the first kiss we shared in months.
”I made plans for us next weekend. Will and Aubrey will take Liam and Stella, and Harlow is going to stay with your parents.”
”Does it have to be this weekend, Henley?”
”Yes, it's all booked and none-refundable. Just do this for me, please?”
”Ok, I'll clear my schedule.”
”I’m going to take a shower before bed.”
”I’ll be up shortly.” I told Luca.
The truth is, I needed some time. It hurt knowing he doesn't want to spend time with me, and I wanted a minute to breathe.
By the time I got upstairs to our bedroom, Luca was sitting in bed reading.
I started my nighttime routine. I changed into my pajamas and started to put on lotion and noticed Luca looking at me.
”Is something wrong?” I asked him.
”No, I was just watching you.” It looked like he smiled at me. I didn't acknowledge it because I didn't want to read into things and continued putting lotion on.
Once I got into bed, I laid down, and Luca put his book down.
”I am sorry, Henley, I don't mean to make things hard for you.”
”I'm just worried that you're missing out on the kids. Liam is growing up so fast, and Harlow is basically a teenager.”
”I’ll put forth more of an effort.”
He leaned over a kissed my head before laying down and turning off the light.
I hope this isn’t the beginning of the end of our marriage, because that's what it feels like.
