I sat in the lunchroom reading my book when someone sat in front of me. I glanced up and saw my girlfriend
“Hey,” I said and she smiled at me before asking
“did you eat yet?”
“not yet,” I said returning my gaze to my book. She was nervous. I could tell. I couldn’t think of any tests she could be nervous about though.
“Are you going home for break?” she asked and I looked up to see her tying her blonde hair up in a messy bun while worrying her bottom lip, her bright green eyes were filling with anxiety over something.
I shook my head and answered her question “no, they are going to Janice’s sister’s house” she nodded and stared at the table
“why?” I asked
“I told my mom I was bringing someone home for thanksgiving”
“she thinks I am bringing home a friend. And I wanted to bring you but you know I haven't come out to them yet and my grandma is gonna be there…” she trailed off
“you want me to pretend to be your friend?”
She nodded and grabbed my hand “please. I really want you to meet my family and I promise to come out to them while we are there” I thought about it before nodding
“fine, I’ll pretend to be your friend so we can see your family” she squealed and hugged me.
That night I packed since break started the next day
“This isn’t going to end well,” my roommate said as she hung from her bunk. her long hair getting in my way
“I know, but she seemed so happy when I agreed” I placed the second book of the series I was reading in the suitcase.
“what are you doing for break anyway?” I asked
“I’m going to visit my sister for a few days,” she said and I nodded
“then shouldn’t you be packing?” I asked as I moved her hair so it was out of my way
“probably but instead I’m thinking of how I am gonna be able to walk into this room without fearing I’m going to walk in to see you and Cora making out” she grinned at me.
I flicked her forehead “that was one time and you said you were going to be at the library for hours”
She laughed and sat back up.
“Okay okay,” she said “on a serious note. Do you think it is a good idea to go with her? If she comes out and they react badly they could take it out on you”
“that doesn’t matter to me right now. I’m trying to think of the good that can come out of this”
“Woah Bianca Marino thinks on the bright side for once!?” she grinned “who are you and what have you done with my best friend”
“Vaffanculo,” I told her and her grin got wider as she sang
“I don’t know what that means”
“just go pack so you aren’t up at three doing it,” I told her with a half-hearted glare
She sighed and got off her bed grabbing her suitcase from the closet.
At noon the next day, Cora was knocking on my door. My roommate opened the door while I sat on my bed
“are you ready?” she asked me and I nodded before standing up
“I’ll see you when I get back. Have a good time with your sister” I told my roommate and she nodded before waving bye
“have fun pretending that you don’t make out every other day” I flipped her off while Cora laughed
“bye Megan” Cora said and we walked down the hall
Once we reached her beat-up corolla we put our stuff in the backseat. I sat in the shotgun seat while Cora started the car. Her phone started ringing so I handed it to her turning down the radio. She hit speakerphone and started to pull out of her parking spot
“hey mom. What’s up?” she asked and I unzipped my bag and got my book out
“I was just wondering if you had left the school yet? Your grandma is gonna be here in a few days”
“We just left the school parking lot. We will be there in about two or three days” she said and stopped at a stoplight.
I glanced at her and she was looking at her phone with a conflicted look. I put my hand over hers where it was resting on the center console.
“Okay, I’ll see you when you get here honey. Drive safe”
“will do. Love you mom” she said and hung up. Sighing and starting to drive again. She didn’t let go of my hand and I reached over for her phone so I could get music playing
“I’m scared” she whispered when we had just switched seats so I could drive for the night
“of?” I asked
“coming out, their reaction, losing my family,” she said and I pulled over. I turned in my seat to face her once I was sure we wouldn’t go into a ditch
“hey, I know you care so much about your family but you have to remember you have a family back at school too. One that will help you if they can’t handle that you love who you love and they cant change that. You have me, amber, Jessie, Megan, and all your other friends and I promise if things go south” I wiped away the tear that had fallen down her face “I will get you out of there as fast s possible and I promise you it will be okay”
She smiled at me and kissed me.
“you’re the best girlfriend I could ever ask for” she whispered when she pulled away. I smiled at her and pulled back onto the road.
“get some sleep okay? I’ll wake you up when it’s your turn to drive” she nodded and took my sweater from where I had put it on the seat and used it as a pillow. I turned the radio down just a little bit and watched the road.
