Maggie climbed out of her daddy’s old Ford pickup and took in the sight of her brother Colby’s bar with a smile. After spending six years in New York City she had returned to her home state of Georgia. She had debated returning back to the outskirts of Savannah where she had grown up, but instead decided to join her brother in Capeside, a small seaside town that was home to many locals and a vacation spot for those who had come across it by accident. Their parents had bought a home there shortly after he had relocated, but unfortunately both passed within a few years. Their father died from cancer, and their mother followed a few months later in a car accident in which the detectives hadn’t been able to rule out suicide.
She had obtained a Bachelor’s degree in social work prior to moving to New York City, but she quickly discovered how depressing and stressful that line of work could be. She had started moonlighting as a bartender to make ends meet, but when Colby brought up the thought of selling off their parents’ house which had sat vacant for the last four years, she decided she needed a change. After all, Colby was getting married to one of her good friends Dee next year and she was a bridesmaid. It was hard to partake in all of the festivities from so far away. She had missed Georgia, and at that point was disgusted by the constant hustle and bustle of the city. She was a home-grown country girl, through and through.
She pressed the door lock down and tossed her keys into her purse before heading into the Sandy Point Speakeasy through the back door to escape the early summer heat. She stepped into her brother’s office where he was balancing the books and she wedged her purse into one of the small lockers, spinning the lock to secure it. Her brother stood and draped his arm over her shoulders, pulling her into his side and kissing her on the top of the head.
“It’s good to have you home, baby sis,” he smiled, and she nudged him in the side with her elbow.
“I guess I kind of missed you too, big bro,” she smiled back at him.
He gave her shoulders one more squeeze before leading her through to the bar and introducing her to his head bartender Liz. The girls shook hands as they greeted each other and made small talk for a few minutes before getting down to business. Liz pulled out a menu of their signature mixed drinks and explained how to make them. Maggie took notes on a small pad before giving it a go. Memorizing the recipes would be the only trouble for her, she had plenty of experience with precise measurements at the bar she had worked at in New York.
By six in the evening the bar was basically packed, being that it was a Friday night. It was filled with sounds of glasses hitting the bar top, pool racks being broken, laughter of the customers after they had a few drinks, and country music from the jukebox. Maggie stayed busy pouring beers from the tap, serving up shots, and making the ladies their fruity drinks, but when she had a moment to stand back and take it all in, she finally felt like she was really home. Sure, she was living in her parents’ house, but she had never lived there before. Not to mention the house had needed work before they passed and it had sat vacant for all those years, so she could easily make it her own. She was just grateful that Colby had gotten Daddy’s truck up and running. She hadn’t owned a vehicle when living in the city.
She was pulled from her thoughts when a ruggedly attractive man took a seat at the far end of the bar. He was wearing worn jeans, a faded black t-shirt with a beer logo that hugged his muscular chest, and an Atlanta Braves ball cap. She grabbed a food menu and started to walk towards him taking in his natural tan, heavily tattooed skin down his left arm, and strong build. She could tell he worked with his hands as she offered him the menu, noticing the signature hands of a mechanic. She may have also payed attention to the fact that there was no evidence of a wedding ring.
“Hi, my name is Maggie. Can I start you off with something to drink?” She offered politely. The man looked up from his cell phone, taking in all five-feet, four-inches of the brunette, his brown eyes meeting her green as he smirked.
“Maggie, huh? You must be the new girl. Guess I’ll have to get you trained like I did with the rest,” he raised his eyebrow.
“I don’t train like a hound, but if you ask nicely, I might get you a drink,” she smiled as sweetly as possible. Attractive, but also a royal jackass. She was only mildly insulted, her skin only crawling slightly thanks to his attitude. Now she knew why he wasn’t married.
“Ooh, a cocky little bitch. I like that.” He chewed on his lip as he stared at her and tried to figure her out. Liz stepped in with his double of whiskey on the rocks and set it on the counter in front of him.
“Leave her alone, Kai. She’s one of the ones who actually knows how to handle herself behind a bar.” Liz glared at him. “You want the usual?” She questioned, and he nodded. “Bacon Cheeseburger with fries,” she started as she looked over at Maggie. “Medium-rare.”
Maggie gave a nod and flashed another sweet, southern smile at Kai before heading over to the computer to enter his order. She hated men like him, the ones who thought women were inferior to them. She could tell by the way he talked and the way that he looked her up and down like she was a piece of meat. Even with her back to him she felt him staring at her.
“Cut her some slack, Kai. She’s Colby’s sister,” Liz stated lowly, only loud enough that he could hear.
“Well then, we’ll be seeing a lot of each other, won’t we? Seeing as though we’ll be in the wedding party together.” He paused as he looked past Liz at Maggie again, his eyes falling to her perfectly round bottom. His cock twitched at the sight of her as he imagined her body pinned underneath of his. She looked like a scrapper, and she was probably an incredible fuck.
“I know that look, Kai. Don’t even think about it!” Liz scolded and he laughed to himself. “She’s off limits.”
“Yeah? Says who?” He pulled his eyes from the fine specimen he had been staring at and looked into Liz’s eyes.
“Do you really want to explain to one of your best friends how you fucked his sister and threw her away?”
“You make me sound like I have no standards.” He sipped his whiskey with a snarky grin.
“Of course, you do. If it has tits and a nice ass, you’ll stick your dick in just about anything,” Liz growled, glaring at him once more before she walked away to serve other customers.
After entering Kai’s order, Liz told Maggie to step outside and take a break. She was appreciative of the fact that Liz could tell he had ruffled her feathers a bit, and she needed a moment to gather herself before going back in. She sat outside on the bench that ran along the back of the bar, and she was joined by Colby a few minutes later. He lit a cigarette and took a few puffs before offering it to her. She took a deep drag and blew the smoke to the side before passing it back. Smoking was a nasty habit that she didn’t want to pick up full-time, but once in a while that sweet nicotine settled her nerves.
“Liz likes you, which means a lot because she hates most of the girls I hire.” Colby smiled over at her as she leaned back against the building while he leaned forward with his elbows on his knees.
“That’s because I’ve already shown her tonight that I can pull my own weight. Plus, I’m the bosses baby sister, so she has to like me,” Maggie teased, and they shared a laugh.
The duo spent the next five minutes chatting about how it was going at her parents’ house, then made arrangements for Colby to help replace a few windows the next day. Once his cigarette had been put out, they headed back inside, and he told her that there was someone there that he wanted her to meet. They went back behind the bar and he led her over towards the far end. She knew exactly what was going to happen when Kai looked up at them and smiled to Colby. She tried to refrain from rolling her eyes for her brother’s sake, but inwardly cringed when Kai stood, and the two men grabbed each other’s hands, leaned over the bar, and patted each other’s backs as a greeting.
“Mags, this is one of my best buddies, Kai Montgomery. Kai, this is my kid sister, Maggie,” Colby introduced them. Maggie plastered a fake smile on her face and offered her hand to him, struggling to resist trying to break his fingers with her grip.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Maggie. Colby talks about you quite a bit. Nice to put a face to the name,” Kai smiled with a nod.
“Can’t say I’ve heard much about you, but the pleasure is all mine, I assure you.” Maggie flashed her million-dollar smile.
Someone called for Colby and he excused himself as Kai drained his glass. She grabbed another from under the bar and put a few fresh cubes of ice in it before pouring another double of whiskey.
“You’re a fast learner, we just might be able to get along,” he gave her a cocky smirk.
Maggie leaned on the bar, making sure to prop herself so her breasts were more noticeable along the low-cut uniform tank top. She wasn’t sure why, but she wanted to knock this guy down and make him squirm, and she knew there was no better way than to make an unexpected move. She crooked her finger, urging him to lean in. She knew she had him when his eyes fell to her cleavage. She moved in close enough that he could feel her warm breath graze against his stubbled cheek, and then his ear.
“Woof,” she whispered as seductively as possible, pulling away from him and giving him a subtle wink before she started walking away. When she glanced back over her shoulder at him, he was smiling to himself as he sipped from his drink. He had chosen the wrong girl to mess with.
Kai hung around for another hour or so watching Maggie’s every move. He normally never pursued the local women. It was easier to have a clean break the morning after a hook-up when he knew he wouldn’t ever see them again. He hadn’t had a steady relationship since he was young and in the Army. He was young and naïve then, but he learned his lesson that he was better off by himself for the most part. He watched Maggie bend over to pick up a rag off of the floor and he twitched again. For this girl he might make an exception, she had already gotten him hard once tonight by whispering seductively in his ear.
Once he settled his check with Liz he headed outside and leaned against the rear bumper of his late model Ram 2500 Laramie as he smoked a cigarette. He looked up at the starlit sky as he took in his surroundings and genuinely smiled. He loved this town. His family was all within an hour’s drive, his business was booming, and his band played some pretty good gigs on the regular. He had everything he needed in life.
He took his time riding home on the back roads throughout the twenty-minute drive. He left the windows rolled down so he could take in the cool night air. He was a little buzzed, and despite being able to talk himself out of most tickets he was hoping to avoid it altogether. He pulled up behind his garage that housed his upstairs apartment and climbed the steps, sighing as he heard Duchess let out a low bark. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, calling the old bloodhound out and leaning against the railing on the small porch as she headed out to the field behind the building and did her business.
Once Duchess returned, she followed him into the apartment, and he locked up the door for the night. He grabbed a beer from the fridge and popped the cap off into the trash, sitting on the recliner chair for a minute to get his heavy boots off. He set them to the side before standing again and making his way back to the bathroom. He placed his beer on the bathroom counter before stripping down and taking a leak. Then, he found the right water temperature in the shower before stepping in and letting it wash away the day. As the hot water cascaded over his skin, he felt all of his muscles relax. He braced himself with his hand on the wall, sighing deeply as he let all of his stress melt away.
The week had been a long one, and he was open on Saturdays until two in the afternoon as well. His sister helped him out doing office work part-time which he was thankful for, but as siblings go, they had argued on and off that week which had stressed him out. He had a pretty decent relationship with both of his sisters, but every time his mom was trying to get to him about something she felt he could do differently in his life, she employed his sisters for her cause. This week she had decided to get on him about buying a house and settling down, but he was happy where he was, and she should have known more than anyone that he doesn’t budge unless he wants to. It was a well-known fact amongst his family and friends that he was extremely stubborn.
After showering he toweled off and wrapped the towel loosely around his hips, then used his electric razor and shaved away the stubble on his face, lightly dabbing some aftershave on his skin once he was finished. He chugged the rest of his beer and tossed the bottle in the trashcan before brushing his teeth and turning out the light. He stepped around Duchess, who was sprawled out in her bed on the floor, tossing the towel on a chair before climbing under the sheets. He sighed deeply as he tried to get comfortable and closed his eyes, his mind quickly wandering to Maggie once again.
Despite all efforts to push her out of his thoughts, he soon found himself extremely aroused at the thought of her. He wanted to see her without the clothes, taste her skin and her sweet juices, watch her get on her knees and take him into her petite mouth, and then he wanted to fuck her into next week. The fact that she was Colby’s sister and should be off-limits only made him want her more. She was the forbidden fruit that he was already aching to taste, and he had only just met her a few hours before.
Maggie woke up to the sunlight peeking through the blinds the next morning. She grinned at the sounds of the birds singing, and then again as she noticed that everything else was quiet. She never had slept well in the city with everything constantly in motion just outside her door. She had only been back a few weeks and she already was sleeping better than she had in years. She stretched before throwing her blankets back, then stood and went over to the window to open the blinds so she could look at her surroundings. It was going to be another beautiful summer day.
She changed out of her pajamas into a pair of denim shorts and a grey t-shirt that had a relaxed fit. She knew Colby would be by in about an hour to help her with the windows they had discussed the night before. She brushed her teeth and pulled her hair back before making her way downstairs and into the kitchen, then making a pot of coffee. She opened up the back door, leaving just the screen door closed so the breeze could flow freely though the downstairs. She smiled as the warm sunlight shone through the kitchen. She had missed the south.
She finished her cup of coffee and the breakfast sandwich she had made herself just before her brother knocked on the front door. She set her mug and plate in the sink before going to greet Colby with a hug. Maggie was thankful for the fact that her brother was so handy around the house. She couldn’t even fathom the cost to do some of the things that needed to be repaired or updated. They worked quickly and called it quits a little after one in the afternoon, then Maggie made them both sandwiches for lunch. They both had to head to the bar in a couple of hours anyway.
“I hope you’re prepared for tonight. The bar gets packed when we have live music, especially the band that’s playing tonight,” Colby warned as he bit into his sandwich.
“I think I can handle it. Bartending in New York was way worse, everyone is so damn picky. Most of the paying customers here want beer or shots.” Maggie rolled her eyes.
“Just remember how much you missed home while you were there. We might not be high-class, but we sure do know how to throw a party. I can vaguely remember carrying you into the house after a few bonfires because you were so drunk you passed out,” he reminded her with a smirk. “You partied harder than most women I know.”
“That was a long time ago,” she sighed with a small laugh. “I’d like to think that I’ve moved past that part of my life by now,” she added with a pause. “What’s the name of the band that’s playing tonight?”
“The Boondock Brothers, it’s Kai’s band,” he shared. She groaned and threw her head back, looking up at the ceiling. “What’s wrong? Did he not make a good first impression?” He teased, and she looked back up and glared at him.
“He was a royal pain in the ass. He’s such a pig. I don’t understand how you two even got to be such good friends, he seems like a real dick,” she put it bluntly.
“Kai’s not that bad, he’s just a little rough around the edges. The guy has been through some shit over the years.”
“So, that gives him an excuse to treat women like dogs?” Maggie shot back, giving him a look that said she didn’t buy the excuse.
“Look, Kai’s a really good guy. He runs a reputable business, he’s good to his friends and his family, and he’s one of the few people I would trust with my life. He just has some issues when it comes to the fairer sex. He’s never told me flat out, but he joined the Army just out of high school, and I think he was really invested in someone that hurt him enough to leave some scars,” Colby explained.
“That doesn’t mean he has to be an ass to anyone with a vagina,” she mumbled back.
“I’ll talk to him,” he held his hands up in defeat. “I’ll tell him to play nice.”
“I can stand up for myself, thank you very much,” she glared at him before standing and grabbing his empty water glass off of the table. “Just because he’s an ass doesn’t mean I can’t handle him.”
“Just give him a chance, I promise you that he isn’t as bad as he seems. Haven’t you ever heard anyone say not to judge a book by its cover?”
“I’m judging the book by its summary, it’s a shitty book,” Maggie smirked, and he couldn’t help but laugh.
The rest of the afternoon went by quickly and Maggie was back at the bar slinging drinks once again. The bar was packed and filled with the chatter of all of the people who had come out for a fun Saturday night. She didn’t even have time to pay attention to Kai and his band setting up on the small stage at the back of the bar. With the first strum of his guitar, the glasses hanging in the racks rattled and vibrations radiated from the scuffed-up floorboards.
An hour into the set things started to calm down for the bartenders as the crowd became slightly intoxicated and focused on the band. Maggie leaned against the bar top as she watched the band rock the house. They played a lot of newer Country covers and plenty of Classic Rock hits. As much as she hated herself for it, she couldn’t help looking Kai up and down. The man screamed sex, even if he was a self-righteous prick.
Her eyes wandered to his grey jeans that were just tight enough in all of the right places. His large silver belt buckle peeked out from behind his guitar every time he turned at just the right angle. He wore a sleeveless black shirt, showing off his strong tattooed arms to all the women who were currently swooning at his feet. His jaw was stubbled, and as she stared at his full lips, she couldn’t help but think about what they would feel like against her skin. She froze as her eyes fell onto his and she realized that he was looking right at her as she took him in.
Kai winked at Maggie and she felt all of the pink drain from her cheeks and she nearly went weak in the knees. Their eyes stayed locked on each other as his deep, masculine voice serenaded the room and he didn’t miss a note on his guitar. She began to breathe faster, her heart starting to pound in her chest as his gaze stayed locked on hers. He didn’t look away until they finished their current song and he went back to trying to hype up the crowd.
Maggie blinked a few times as she came back to reality and realized that there were once again customers waiting in line for drinks. As she turned and started walking towards them, she became acutely aware that her body had reacted to Kai’s leering at her in more ways than just causing her cheeks to be flushed. The friction of her denim shorts against her warm, and now wet labia was proving to be a tough distraction as she continued to work throughout the night.
The band played late into the night and the crowd lingered for hours after they had finished their set. Once people had started filtering out, Liz and one of the other bartenders manned the bar while Maggie made trips back and forth from the stock room to replenish the shelves behind the bar. On her third trip back to the stock room, she headed into the back and started moving around boxes, startling when the door to the room closed. When she heard the lock turn, she immediately went on high alert. Her skin raised with goosebumps as she looked around to see what she could grab in order to defend herself against who was sure to be a serial killer. She grabbed a boxcutter off of the shelf as footsteps started coming closer to the other side of a tall stack of boxes that was blocking her line of vision. She slid the blade out on the boxcutter as Kai turned the corner with a smirk.
“Jesus fucking Christ, you scared the ever-loving shit out of me!” Maggie exclaimed as she placed her hand over her heart that was about to pound right out of her chest. Kai laughed as he reached for the boxcutter in her other hand, retracting the blade and tossing it back on the shelf.
“What were you actually planning on doing with that thing, anyway?” He teased, earning him a shove in the chest.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” She raised her voice. He smirked as he continued to move closer to her, backing her up against the wall.
“I have a proposal,” he spoke softly. He placed his hands on her hips and she instinctively put her hands against his chest to resist him, but she couldn’t manage to push him away.
“A proposal?” She nearly squeaked out. His face was so close to hers she could feel the heat from his skin and smell the whiskey on his breath. She felt her breasts begin to swell and the blood flow increase to her most sensitive areas once again. He smirked as he pinned her in place under his body, keeping one hand on her hip and bracing the other on the wall next to her head.
“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you since the first time I laid eyes on you.” She could feel his breath against the skin of her neck and ear as he whispered to her. “Do realize how hard I was while I sat at that bar and watched you last night?”
“Kai,” she started softly as she gently pushed her hands against him, “I think we both know that this is a terrible idea.”
“I’ve seen the way you look at me, the way you undress me with your eyes,” he continued as he moved his hand from her hip to take her hand and move it to the bulge in the jeans she had thought were so perfectly tight. He moved his hand from hers and pressed the bulge of his heavy cock into her hand. “The fact that I shouldn’t want you only makes me want you even more.”
“We can’t,” Maggie tried to protest. Before she could say more, his lips greedily crashed into hers. She allowed herself to get caught up in the moment and kiss him back, but she didn’t realize she had started stroking him until he groaned into the kiss then pulled away as he panted for air.
“Are you honestly going to deny that you want it, too?” He questioned as his lips went to her neck and she had to fight the moan that wanted to escape her throat. She gathered as much strength as she could, and she shoved him away.
“You seriously need to stop. I can’t even stand you, what makes you think I would ever sleep with you,” she tried to justify. He smiled and moved in closer once again. She looked away from him as she tried to portray that she wasn’t interested. He grabbed her lower jaw between his thumb and index finger, forcefully making her look back up at him.
“Tell me honestly that you’re not turned on right now, and I’ll leave you alone,” his husky voice suggested. Her cheeks flushed again, and he didn’t give her any more time to think before he gently grabbed at her through her shorts. “How about that, I was right,” he smiled to himself and she let a small smile slip. She immediately corrected it, but he had already seen it. “Don’t fight it, Maggie. There’s no shame in admitting it when a man turns you on.” He started massaging her and the soft moan she had been holding back slipped free.
“We can’t,” she breathed as her eyes fell closed and her head rolled back to rest against the wall. “What if someone finds out?”
“No one has to know,” he answered as he massaged her harder.
Just as Maggie considered letting him take her right then and there, the handle to the storeroom jiggled and Colby yelled into her that the door was locked. Her eyes shot open and she looked up at Kai who was still smiling his crooked, sexy smile. Colby yelled to her again and she swallowed before yelling to him that she would be right there. Kai tangled his hand in her hair and pulled her in once more. He pressed his lips firmly against hers, forcing his tongue into her hot mouth. She instinctively met his tongue with hers for a split second before pushing him away again.
“Consider my offer. We could rock each other’s worlds, baby,” he whispered with a smirk before finally pulling back.
Maggie ran her hands over her face as she tried to pull herself together, and Kai picked up a couple of cases of beer that were stacked next to the door before pulling it open. Colby looked at him curiously and he smiled his charming smile that everyone always fell for.
“My bad, Bro. I came back to do the heavy lifting and I must have bumped the lock when I went for the cases behind the door,” Kai explained.
“No problem. Thanks for the help, Brother,” Colby smiled back, completely convinced by Kai’s explanation. Maggie quickly picked up a few more liquor bottles and took a deep breath before turning to face her brother. She flashed him a smile before heading back out to the bar.
