I hugged Naomi tightly.
“Don’t act like you haven’t seen me in months,” she laughed sarcastically.
I turned to look at the friend she brought. He was so good looking. He had dark hair and dark eyes that seemed to see right to my soul. He had a few days’ worth of stubble on his cheeks and jawline.
“This is Nathan.”
“Hi,” I smiled at him.
“Nathan has friends in high places and he’s going to help us get to the bottom of this.”
I frowned wondering what friends in high places meant.
I later found out that Nathan’s friends meant people that worked in government and had an influence over almost anyone.
Two days later we finally had the details of the person who the personal account belonged to. I couldn’t wait to see who it was.
“What are you going to do when all this is over?” Naomi asked.
“I’m coming back and hopefully teaching my students again,” I sighed.
“Are you sure?”
I nodded. “Mum is going to be gone for a few months. The distance to the care center is the same if I were to move back. Sean and I aren’t that close anymore. I really have nothing left here.”
“You can stay with me,” she said simply and smiled.
“Thank you. I never asked but how do you know Nathan?”
“He’s a regular at the restaurant,” she shrugged.
“And there’s nothing going on between you two?”
“No,” she said defensively.
“Okay, sorry I just had to ask,” I bumped her shoulder with mine.
Nathan walked into the room looking serious, which is the only expression I’d seen on him. I wonder how he looked when he smiled. I was sure it could light up the whole city.
“This doesn’t look good,” Naomi muttered. I wondered how she could read him so clearly.
“I have the culprit.”
“Who is it?” I asked.
“You’re not going to like this,” he said as he handed me a statement with the details of the accountholder.
For the second time that week I stared at a report in shock.
The words jumped out at me and repeated themselves in my head. I felt dizzy with the betrayal and suddenly I understood how Luke must have felt when he saw proof that I’d done it. All rational thought fled, and I clenched my fists. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
No matter what happened in the future, I would never be able to forget those three words.
Account-holder: Sean Fitzgerald.
The brother that I’d always loved.
It seems like this week would go down in history for me. Being accused and betrayed by the two men in my life that I’d loved unconditionally.
