Two days later Lana slowly stirred awake, smiling as she thought about the night before. They had driven to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas and after enjoying a nice dinner at the historic hotel they were staying at, they sat outside at the edge of the canyon and talked for hours. They talked about their childhoods, what they wanted out of their careers, their hopes for the future together, and when they wanted to consider adding to their family. She felt like after their road trip (which was quickly coming to an end) and many late-night conversations throughout, that they had bonded even more and they were closer than ever before.
She climbed out of bed and grabbed her panties that had been discarded on the floor the night before, slipping them on along with one of Dylan’s t-shirts. She headed for the bathroom to brush her teeth and freshen up, and once she finished she followed the sound of his voice into the small living room area of their suite. Dylan smiled as he saw her, quickly finishing his conversation and hanging up the phone. She joined him on the small sofa, curling her legs underneath of her as he reached up and placed his hand on her cheek and leaned in for a brief kiss. They exchanged smiles again and he kissed her more deeply, pulling away with a small laugh.
“I will never get tired of seeing you walk around half-asleep and wearing my clothes in the morning,” he teased, and she smirked.
“You’re only saying that because I’m still half-naked,” she rolled her eyes and they both laughed. “We’re you talking to Nat?” She smiled.
“No, just my mom. She said that everything’s going well at the house. I told her we would be heading back home in a few days,” he rested his arm on her legs, brushing his fingertips back and forth on her smooth skin.
“I’m excited to go home and see Nat, but I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t miss waking up to no responsibilities,” she sighed with a small smile. “I kind of just dropped off the radar for the most part, I’m sure my work has piled up.”
“I wouldn’t worry about it too much, Mia’s probably got everything under control. You said she’s been really stepping up lately.”
“She definitely has,” Lana nodded. “I’ve actually considered seeing if she wants to partner up. She’s been booking a lot of her own shoots, a lot of boudoir type stuff. Obviously, we would each keep doing our own things, but if we partnered and built a business it would offer a pretty good selection of services to our clients. Sex sells, but you have to sell it right to make it a business,” she joked.
“Then you should go for it. After all, she did learn from the best of the best,” he smirked, then wagged his eyebrows at her and licked his lip suggestively.
“We literally have gone at it four times in the last 24 hours, don’t you ever get tired?” She questioned teasingly.
“Not when I’m with you,” he grinned playfully, leaning in and kissing her again. He trailed kisses back her jaw and to her neck, moaning softly against her skin.
“Relax, Don Juan,” she teased as she pushed him back and stood up. “Why don’t we get some breakfast and fresh air first. We should seize the day,” she smiled as she slipped her hair tie off her wrist and pulled her hair back loosely.
“Good idea. In fact, it’s such a good idea that I’m already ten steps ahead of you,” he smiled mischievously.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means,” he stood and pressed his lips to hers softly, “that we will seize the day like no other day has ever been seized,” he smirked before heading back through the room towards the en-suite bathroom, leaving her there to ponder curiously about what he meant.
The pair spent a majority of the day visiting the little shops and museum-type places throughout the south-rim of the canyon. They bought some pottery pieces made by local Indian tribes and found a dream catcher they knew Natalia would love. They joined a few walking tours and learned history about the canyon as well as about some of the animals that inhabited it. It was late afternoon when they headed back to their room and showered. Dylan told Lana that he had made dinner reservations for 6:30, and it was just after four when he suggested they take a walk on the path that ran along the canyon rim until they went for dinner. She slipped on a long dress that was white at the top and gradually became more printed as it reached the bottom. It was light and flowed comfortably. Dylan wore black shorts and a light blue button-down shirt, rolling the sleeves up to his elbows. They both put on comfortable shoes and headed for the path.
Dylan was unusually quiet as they walked but Lana didn’t pry. She thought maybe he was just taking in the quiet and relaxing atmosphere. They stopped and sat on one of the benches for a bit as she rested her head on his shoulder and they looked out at one of the world’s most incredible natural creations as he took her hand in his and brought it to his lips. She looked up at him with a smile and he gently pressed his lips to hers. He pulled away and looked down at his watch before standing and offering her his hand to pull her up with him. He offered her his arm and she linked hers with it as they started walking again. They took one of the splits in the path that went to one of the lookout points and Dylan stopped walking before they reached the clearing and took both of her hands in his as he faced her.
“So, we’ve both established that we’re a little crazy, right?” He asked softly with a smile, and she nodded with a nervous laugh.
“Yes, and you’re acting strange so I’m assuming you’ve done something to fit that crazy characteristic,” she smirked, and he squeezed her hands with a smile.
“I have, and it’s pretty insane,” he nodded with a chuckle before meeting her eyes with his again. “I wanted to do something special, something that we would both remember for the rest of our lives.”
“Okay,” she smiled as she waited for him to elaborate. “Something like what?”
“Something like...making you my wife,” he paused. “Tonight,” he added softly, and she looked at him like he was crazy.
“What about our families, and especially Natalia. You don’t think they should be here when we get married?”
“What if I told you they’re here, right down at the end of this path?” He asked softly, and she bit her lip as she looked up at him.
“You’re lying,” she smiled in disbelief. “Who’s here?” She questioned, still not believing him.
“Everyone,” he stated with a shrug. “Our parents, brothers, sisters, Nat,” he paused. “Mark and Katie are here, too,” he added.
“Seriously?” She smiled, and he nodded.
“Seriously,” he squeezed her hands again. “I called them when we were in Vegas, got it all planned out. My parents have a friend that’s a minister. They were able to get him to come out on short notice.”
“So, wait, you’re saying you arranged for us to get married? Right now?” She looked at him with wide eyes as it all sunk in. “Like, we’ll be legally married before we go home?”
“More like in the next 15 minutes, as long as you’ll have me,” he reached up and tucked her hair out of her face. “I know it’s been a wild ride, but I also know that we want this forever. If I’ve learned anything over the past couple of weeks, it’s that there’s nothing we can’t make it through as long as we have each other. I can’t wait any longer to be your husband and to call you my wife.”
“I can’t wait for it either, and I can’t wait to start our “forever” together, too,” she replied as a joyful tear slipped from her eye. He reached up and brushed it away with the pad of his thumb and smiled.
“Then let’s do it, we’ll seize the day,” he cupped her cheek and leaned in to kiss her slowly. “I love you, mi amor,” he whispered against her lips before kissing her again.
“I love you, too,” she whispered back with a smile.
Dylan took Lana’s hand in his and their fingers laced together in the natural way that they had come to know. He flashed her another small smile as they began to walk towards their destination once more. Once they reached the clearing that looked over the canyon, Lana grinned as they were greeted by their families and their two best friends. They shared hugs with everyone before Katie pulled out a simple, white flowered, halo hair-band and pinned it into Lana’s hair. The group gathered together, and the minister went to the head of the group, turning and facing them. Dylan’s brother James, and Mark stood to the minister’s left, and Katie stood to the minister’s right. Dylan took Lana’s hand and they looked into each other’s eyes and smiled.
“Ready?” He asked, nodding towards the minister.
“Just one more thing,” Lana smiled, slipping her hand from his and turning towards Natalia. She reached for her arm and gently pulled her into her side, draping her arm over her shoulders and kissing her on the side of the head. “Will you be my bridesmaid?” She asked Natalia with a smile.
“Really?” Nat grinned, and Lana nodded.
“You’re as much of a part of this as we are, get up there with Katie,” Lana nodded to her friend. Natalia pulled her into a hug before quickly joining Katie up front. “Now we’re ready,” Lana told Dylan as she went to join him again.
Dylan couldn’t wipe the stupid-happy grin off of his face as he took Lana’s hand in his again and led her up to the minister and their small wedding party. They turned and faced each other again, both of their hands joined together. Their eyes met and they smiled as the minister started to speak, leading them through a short but heartfelt ceremony. Within a few moments they were exchanging vows, and to Lana’s surprise when he asked about the exchanging of rings, Dylan turned to his brother who opened a small, black box and passed him two rings. Her wedding band matched her engagement ring, and his was platinum with a black tungsten stripe through the center.
“You’re just full of surprises, aren’t you,” she whispered teasingly.
“Gotta make sure everybody knows we locked this down,” he replied with a smirk and they laughed softly.
The minister started speaking again and guided them through the ring exchange before closing his bible and smiling at the two of them. He asked them all to join him in a prayer for their union before finally pronouncing them husband and wife. When he gave Dylan permission to now kiss his bride, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her hungrily, bending her back and smiling into the kiss as everyone laughed and applauded. She was breathless by the time he pulled her back into a standing position and their lips separated.
“Always the show-off,” she teased, and those closest who overheard them laughed.
“I’m a writer, babe. It’s in my DNA to be dramatic,” he joked back, and they all laughed again.
The newly married couple talked for a bit with their families and friends before the group headed back towards the hotels. There was a special small banquet room reserved for them at the nicest restaurant at their hotel and the tables had all been arranged so they were facing each other in a big square. Dylan and Lana stopped to sign all of the necessary paperwork before they were seated in the middle of one side with Mark and Katie to their left with Lana’s family, and Natalia to their right with the rest of Dylan’s family. Katie raised a toast in Lana’s honor and James raised a toast in Dylan’s before Dylan’s father Greg asked to speak. He stood up with his glass in hand and turned towards the happy couple.
“This is spur of the moment, so I want you all to bear with me. I’m not one for speaking, but in this happy occasion I feel it’s the right thing to do,” he started as everyone smiled. “Lana, first of all, welcome to the family,” he grinned, and she smiled back in return. Dylan put his arm over her shoulders and gave her a squeeze, kissing her on the cheek. “I know he’s told you his version of growing up, but I think it’s time that you heard mine.
“When Dylan came into our lives, he was at the age where he easily could have gone down an even tougher road than what he had experienced so far. While we had provided him with the opportunity he needed and deserved, he quickly stood out as a fighter. When others in his situation would have simply shut down and given in to the easier path of destruction, I watched him fight to become a better version of himself, and eventually fight to be a good man. I watched him struggle but continue fighting to be a good father at a young age, and for years after he succeeded, that’s where I thought his fight would end.
“My son had turned into the man that we had hoped for, and he had his priorities straight as far as putting his daughter first. He had turned his passion for adventure and storytelling into a career that some will only ever dream of, and he seemed like he was a happy man. We didn’t realize how much happier he could be until he found you,” he smiled at Lana. “You were everything he never knew he needed. His fight began again, but this time he was fighting for you.” Dylan’s hand tightened on her shoulder.
“Since you came into his life, he’s been an even better version of himself. He’s been more passionate about his work and family, and whether he realized it or not, he’s even become a better father as you both chose to make Natalia a priority in your relationship. He’s become stronger, loved harder, and he’s more determined than ever to fight for his happy ending. Here’s to being able to experience that journey with both of you, and watching your family grow,” he raised his glass. “To Dylan and Lana, may you have a lifetime of love and happiness,” he grinned, and everyone toasted to their love.
Lana’s father Fernando followed with a very short toast, not being one for speaking much. He said a few kind words about how Dylan had made Lana so happy, and they couldn’t be happier for them. He also welcomed him to their family as his had with her. They spent the next couple of hours celebrating with their families and friends before heading their separate ways.
When they got back up to their room, they slipped their shoes off and Dylan made a trip to use the bathroom while Lana poured two glasses of champagne from the bottle that had been sent up as a gift from the hotel. She carried the glasses outside to the balcony off of the sitting room and placed them on the small table outside as she leaned against the railing and looked out over the canyon. Everything had happened so quickly that evening, and for the first time she was able to take a few deep breaths and process everything that had happened. She was lost in her thoughts when Dylan came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, pressing his lips to her neck as he moved her hair to the side. She turned in his arms and put her arms around his neck, leaning up to kiss him deeply. He moaned softly into the kiss as he tightened his arms around her.
“Well, hello there, Mrs. MacNamara,” he greeted softly between kisses.
“Hello there, dearest husband,” she smiled, and they shared a small laugh. “So, what other surprises do you have in store?”
“An entire lifetime of them, just for you, mi amor,” he whispered softly.
Their champagne wasquickly forgotten as he carried her to the bedroom and gave her an example ofthe many surprises he still had in his vault.
~Six Months Later~
Lana stared down at the positive pregnancy tests in disbelief. She had only had her IUD removed a little over a month before, and she hadn’t even had a full period. Of course, the whole idea of getting her IUD removed was because she and Dylan wanted to expand their family, but her doctor had explained that after having an IUD it frequently took six to twelve months before a woman’s body would regulate enough to conceive. She knew that this wasn’t impossible, but the fact that it had all happened so quickly was still a complete shock.
She stashed the tests back in the box and put the box in the back of one of the drawers in the bathroom before touching up her eye makeup that had run with her tears of joy, and then stepping out of the bathroom. Dylan was already gone for the day having back to back meetings scheduled in the city and Natalia was with Mari, leaving the house abnormally quiet. She pulled on a pair of faded, torn up skinny jeans and a black, ruffled, flowing camisole before making her way downstairs. She poured herself a small cup of coffee and grabbed a yogurt out of the fridge, taking a seat at the kitchen island and scrolling through the local news on her iPhone as she ate her breakfast. Once her stomach was satisfied, she slipped on her strappy sandals and looked herself over in the large mirror by the front door, running her fingers through her hair that flowed over one of her shoulders and smiling as she let her hand fall to her lower abdomen.
She pulled into the alley behind her studio that sat on one of the busiest strips in LA. Thanks to the popularity of her work, and Mia’s growing fanbase, they were able to expand when the business next to her studio had gone out and now had the capability to do photoshoots in-house. Lana still photographed her racier works at her client’s homes, especially if it was privately contracted, but Mia was making a killing with her boudoir photography and having their own sets allowed them to have much more control of lighting and props.
Lana spent the morning in her office editing photos from the shoots she had done in the previous few days while Mia photographed two different boudoir sessions in studio. She was grateful that Katie had called her asking if she wanted to meet for lunch, not just to break her away from staring so hard at her screen, but because it was killing her not to tell anyone her news. They would have plenty to talk about regardless, Katie and Mark had just relocated to LA a couple of months prior. They along with Lana and Dylan had all invested in a nightclub that was set to open that night.
Lana stepped into the small café and Katie waved her over to the table she had already managed to grab. Katie stood and the girls shared a quick hug before taking a seat. They talked about their mornings as they waited for their waitress who came over carrying a tray with two glasses of white wine and two glasses of water. The girls placed their normal orders and handed the waitress their menus before she trotted off to give them to the kitchen.
“I ordered you your Pinot Gris while I was waiting,” Katie smirked.
“Well, I appreciate the sentiment,” Lana smiled warmly. “However, I hope you’re thirsty, because I’ll be skipping out on the alcohol for a while,” she added with a smirk.
“What, why?” Katie’s brow furrowed, before her eyes lit up with realization. “Oh my gosh, seriously?”
“I used 3 different tests, so I’d say it’s a pretty sure thing,” Lana laughed, taking a sip of her water. “Just don’t say anything to Mark, I literally just found out this morning and I haven’t even told Dylan yet. I’m trying to figure out how to break the news.”
“Girl, he’s going to be so stoked! I’m so excited for you guys, you’re going to be such an awesome mommy!”
“Awe, you’re too sweet,” Lana grinned. “Now stop it, or you’ll make me cry again,” she joked, and both girls laughed.
They spent the next hour discussing what they would be wearing and their plans for arriving at and opening the club that night. They had been promoting like crazy, and they were expecting a very large turnout due to the location and hype that had been generated. The club was upscale, top shelf liquors, live music and DJs, and a rooftop cabana bar. They had partnered with an artisan chef to create bar bites for the outdoor setting, while the indoor setting was meant to have more of the dance floor/traditional club feel.
After they had solidified their plans for the evening, the girls parted ways and Lana went back to the studio to finish up a few things before going home to get ready for the night. Dylan had gotten stuck in traffic getting home, and as much as he had wanted to take the time to devour her, he had to settle for showering while she was getting dressed for the night. When he stepped out of the shower, he found his wife in the bedroom in her short, black sequined fringed dress slipping on her black Jimmy Choo woven leather stilettos. He pulled on his boxer briefs and Armani pants as she slipped in her long, dangling, diamond teardrop earrings. He went over to her jewelry box that was mounted to the bedroom wall, and picked out a vintage diamond teardrop necklace that he had found in his travels that made him think of her. Their eyes met in the reflection of the mirror as he opened the latch and gently placed it around her neck, securing it in place.
“You look stunning,” Dylan said softly against her ear, causing her to smile.
“You’re pretty good looking yourself, it’s a shame you have to finish putting clothes on,” Lana smirked as she turned to face him and pressed her lips to his. He smiled and deepened the kiss.
“Damn you, goddess. Why must you torture me so?” He sighed, looking up at the ceiling dramatically. Lana laughed, reaching up and placing her hand on his cheek.
“Look, Shakespeare, pull yourself together so we can get going. If we’re late to this shindig, Katie will kill you, and then I’d be lonely. We can’t have that,” she pouted playfully.
“Fine, Cleopatra, have it your way,” he teased before leaning in for one more kiss. Lana stepped away, grabbing his black dress shirt off of the dresser and tossing it to him.
“Besides, I have a surprise for you that you’re not going to want to miss,” she smirked, blowing him a kiss as she backed out of the bedroom.
The next few hours seemed to fly by as they rode to the club, made sure everything was in order, walked the press line, then opened their doors and stood for photos. By 10 P.M. everything was in full swing, and Lana and Dylan had managed to escape to the catwalk suspended from the ceiling. Dylan placed his left hand on her left hip as he held her back against him and pressed a kiss to the right side of her neck. The club was at capacity and people were lined up outside waiting to get in. Mark and Katie were scoping out the roof top cabana bar to make sure all was in order while they kept an eye on all of the partygoers. He had to admit that when Mark and Katie had suggested this joint venture, he initially wasn’t sure how this would turn out. After an incredible opening night, seeing crowds of people having such a great time, and seeing the smile on his wife’s face he knew they had made the right decision.
“It’s all pretty incredible,” Dylan admitted, giving her hip a gentle squeeze.
“I’ll say,” Lana grinned, turning to face him and wrapping her arms around his neck as he slipped his around her waist. “Now all we need to do is figure out where the best place is to sneak away to when we’re feeling frisky,” she hinted, leaning in and kissing him seductively.
“I like where your dirty little mind is going,” he growled. Lana laughed and they shared a playful kiss. “Ooo, give Daddy some more of that sugar,” he wagged his eyebrows and they both laughed as he carefully nipped at her neck. Lana took a deep breath and placed her hands on his biceps.
“Actually, while we’re on that topic, that’s where your surprise comes in,” Lana explained, looking up at him as she bit her lip. “I mean, I was surprised too, but no time like the present, right?”
“Wait, what topic? You lost me, babe,” Dylan looked at her amusedly.
“You know, the whole “Daddy” thing,” Lana smiled with a shrug.
“What?” Dylan breathed as he started to realize what she was saying. “Babe, are you saying you’re...?” He questioned, and she nodded with a grin. “We’re pregnant?” He asked again, just to confirm that they were definitely both on the same page.
“We’re pregnant,” Lana nodded. “You’re going to be a Daddy,” she smiled up at him as her eyes welled up with tears once again.
“Oh, Baby!” Dylan exclaimed excitedly as he slipped his arms around her and lifted her feet of the ground, kissing her passionately. “I feel like I’m on top of the world!”
“It’s because you are, babe. The best part of it is that I get to be here with you, and Natalia and our little one on the way will also be by your side. I think it’s safe to say that we’ve finally beat the odds of all of the fucked up shit we’ve endured in our lives. I think this is supposed to be our happily ever after,” she smiled widely as he set her feet firmly back down.
“I have no doubt,” he grinned as widely as the Cheshire Cat. “I love you, mi amor. Thank you for making my life whole again.”
“I love you too. I’m so glad we gambled on each other. Because baby, we sure as hell won.”
