Chapter 1 - My Hero

*Shani’s Point Of View*

"Shani, check this out!" I looked at Kevin, slightly smiling as he started dancing.

He ran over to me as I sat down on the bleachers, watching Josh throw a basketball. It was after school and Josh, my older brother, had asked me to pick up Kevin from his elementary school and bring him back here. Now I was stuck with the little monster, not that I didn't mind.

"Do you think I'll be as good as Josh one day?" He pointed his small hand towards Josh and I smiled, nodding.

"Totally, even better." He laughed, staring at him in awe.

"I'm hungry, Shan." He grumbled, resting his head against my arm.

I ruffled up his blond hair before standing up, "I'll go get you something from the vending machine." I kissed his forehead causing him to groan but I knew he secretly liked it.

I walked down the bleachers, slightly glancing at Josh while he made a basket. I quickly exited the gym, walking around to the front entrance of it towards the vending machine. I pulled out a dollar from my pocket, readjusting my glasses. Annoyed, I pulled them off, holding them in my hand. I don't even know why I wear them, I don't necessarily need them. I only use them for when I read so I'm not that blind.

I pushed the number for Kevin's favorite snack and groaned when it got stuck.

"Are you kidding me?" I kicked at it, slightly hating life. I just wanted a bag of chips.

"You need help?" I jumped, turning around to see a guy with bright blue eyes staring at me.

"Oh, um... the chips got stuck." Giving me a charming smile, he moved up and put a dollar in and pushed a button causing two bags of chips to fall.

"Wow, my hero." I sarcastically said it, grabbing both chips and went to hand one to him.

"Keep it." He shrugged, looking around as I looked him up and down.

Leather jacket, dark blue jeans, black hair and a sharp jawline, definitely someone my brother would warn me about but he seems promising.

"Thanks..." He gave me a slight nod, subtly looking me up and down.

"I'm Zachary, well, Zach." I froze for a second, recognizing his name.

"Uh... Ortega?" He laughed some, nodding his head.

"Yeah, what's your name?" I bit my lip, sort of embarrassed that he didn't know my name when I had homeroom with him for two years, well, three since it's going to be summer break in a week.

"Shani... we have homeroom together." Recognition crossed his features and he nodded, looking at the glasses in my hand.

"Right, sorry, you're usually wearing glasses. You look better without them, I can see your face more." I crossed my arms, straightening my posture as I felt heat rush to my cheeks.

"Thanks, I guess. I'll see you around." I turned on my heel, walking away until he called after me.

He jogged next to my side, slightly touching my shoulder.

"Can I have your number?" I looked him up and down then shook my head.

"Sorry, I don't give my number to just anyone. See you." I started walking again and he of course, followed after me.

"Listen, Zach, you seem nice but I'm not interested." I walked faster but he kept my pace.

"Maybe I can change your mind." I scrunched my nose up, shaking my head.

"Nah, I don't think so." I opened the gym doors, relieved as the cool air hit me before walking up the bleachers to where Kevin happily swung his feet.

"You sure about that? Give me one date, just one." I glanced his way, walking over to Kevin.

"You're persistent, I'll give you that. No date." He sat down next to me while I handed Kevin his chips.

"Come on, it would be free food since I'd be paying. You can't pass that up." I contemplated it for a while. Although it is tempting, I have no idea what this guy is like.

"As good as that sounds, I don't know you." He sighed, making me face towards him.

"That's the point of a date, so we could get to know each other." I shrugged, opening the second bag of chips.

"Pass." I gave him a sweet smile, turning back forward as Josh jogged across the court.

"Fine, then can we at least be friends?" I snapped my fingers, looking back at him.

"That I can do." Kevin being the curious little thing he is, stopped munching on his chips and looked over at Zach.

"Who are you?" I rolled my eyes at Kevin watching as Zach smiled, leaning over me to talk to him.

"I'm Zach, Shani's friend." Kevin narrowed his eyes and growled at him. Literally freaking growled. Do five year olds growl?

"Kev, we don't growl at people. Be nice." Zach stared at him in amusement before looking over at Josh.

"Is he the reason you won't go out with me? He's your boyfriend?" I started laughing, shaking my head.

"Oh god no, he's my older brother. I wouldn't be dating my brother. Thats gross." He furrowed his eyebrows, glancing at Josh and Kevin before settling his gaze back on me.

"Sorry, it's just you..."

"Don't look alike? I know, I myself wonder if I'm adopted. I mean, these two are both blond and have brown eyes and I have dark brown hair with green eyes. Also weird, my parents are both blond and my mom has blue eyes while my dad has brown. Pretty crazy." He slowly nodded, looking forward as Josh wiped his face with his shirt.

"Guys! Let's go!" I stood up, grabbing Kevin's hand before walking down the bleachers which of course Zach followed me as well.

Josh narrowed his eyes at Zach then gently grabbed my arm, pulling me towards him. "What the hell are you doing with this guy?" He whispered, putting Kevin behind him.

"Um... he's my new friend. He doesn't bite." Zach chuckled, walking up next to me.

"It's been a while, hasn't it, Joshua?" Josh clenched his jaw, shaking his head.

"Not long enough... I don't want you near Shani." I scoffed, smacking his arm.

"I can hang out with whoever I want. I'll see you around, Zach." I glared at Josh before walking away and rolled my eyes while Kevin growled at Zach before running up next to me.

I glanced back, watching as Josh and Zach got in a small argument. I sighed, grabbing Kevin's hand not understanding why Josh was acting so protective.

"What's with you and the growling?" Kevin shrugged, looking around.

"I don't like him." I refrained from rolling my eyes and started walking towards the back entrance of the school and towards the parking lot.

"Shani!" I turned around, squinting my eyes from the sunlight as Julia ran over to me.

"Hey, bestie and little one." She bent down to Kevin's level and ruffled his hair but then jumped back when he tried to bite her.

"Kev, what the hell? You part dog or something?" He growled, narrowing his eyes at her.

"Well then, guess someone is a little grumpy. Anyway, I was wondering when you were passing out yearbooks." I licked my lips, trying to remember when we were supposed to.

"Um... I think tomorrow which is before the seniors leave for all their activities and trips." She nodded, clapping her hands excitedly.

"Can't believe we're going to be seniors next year! Ugh, I'm so glad I get to spend next year with you and your eighteenth birthday!" She excitedly pulled me into a hug, jumping up and down.

"Well, I'll call you later. Bye you little monster." She said it in a baby voice making me furrow my eyebrows causing Kevin to lunge at her but I pulled him back.

She nervously fixed her hair before quickly walking off, slightly glancing back at him.

"Really, Kev? What has gotten into you?" He shrugged, staring after her and I tilted my head to the side as I realized she was now talking with Zach who was staring at me from the distance.

"Nothing, I just don't like her... I don't like him either." I sighed, shaking my head.

Apparently Josh doesn't like them either. I don't know why but I guess only time will tell.
