5 . Predicament.
"Marry you?!" She jeered. "Never. Not even if I'm offered billions."
"You're selfish enough to let your brother die? I'll give you two scenarios. Imagine, in one case you refuse my offer and go to jail, what will happen to your brother? Who will look after him in your absence?" He gauged her reactions, which had shifted from anger to dismay.
"Now imagine the second scenario, where you agree to marry me and we're living happily ever after. We'll have beautiful kids someday and I'll also help you with Jake's surgery. He'll be soon playing around with the kids of his age, he'll go to school, he'll live his dreams."
Of course she loved her little brother more than anything else in this world. All she ever prayed for was his happiness and health. Second scenario which though looked as tempting as it could be, she knew very well it was a trap.
Using her brother as a weapon, all he wanted was to get her in his bed.
"Think about it for a day. Carefully. I'll be back tomorrow. Remember, your choice will affect three lives. Mine, yours and your brother's." He left giving her the horror script of her life.
She plunged in defeat. What was she supposed to do now? And Jake? How's she going to tell him this? He'll never agree to their marriage. She knew how much Jake hated David. Forget about marriage, he cannot even stand him.
But what if David truly loved her? Her heart argued.
Who are you kidding? Her mind asked her.
Think about Jake. Think about his life, his happiness. And for that if you'd to become his slave, accept that too. Her heart told her.
Yes, for Jake. She's in a dilemma for the whole night. Sleep was miles away when she kept calculating the possibilities continuously.
What could be the worst case scenario? He'll be possessive or abusive. She'll bear that for her brother happily.
But looking at the bright side, she imagined a happy life ahead. She's sitting on the porch with their babies in her lap, David playing tennis with Jake and like a one happy family they lived happily together.
Jake will eventually forgive her. All she'd to do was make sure that he never sees her sad or hurt. And about David, she'll learn to love him. You don't always get to marry the person you love, she thought. What God has given her was actually a blessing in disguise.
David was a key to her happiness, to Jake's happiness. He'd promised her that he'll take care of Jake's surgery, so what else did she need? What else does she want to stay happy? She'd no idea if David truly loved her or not, but even if he didn't, she'll love him which will be enough for both.
But what if he's not what he looks like? Her mind questioned.
What skeletons could be hidden in his closet? At max, he'll beat her. But that's far better than rotting in jail and seeing her baby brother suffer and die.
No, Jake was her first priority while her happiness and everything else was secondary. If marrying David would help Jake, then she'll do it without any hesitation. David was at least a fine person, at least that's what she thought about him. Even if she'd to marry the devil for Jake's sake, she'd do it in a jiffy without any second thoughts.
Next day, she decided to bring this up with Jake. "Hey my baby boy." She snuggled close to him.
"Hey." He casually responded.
Something about him seemed off to her. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." He said.
"Jake, is everything okay?" She asked him worriedly.
"Yes, everything's fine, just dandy." He shrugged.
She sat beside him and ruffled his hair. "I know you're a big boy and you don't want me to worry, but please tell me what's bothering you."
"I don't want to sit like this always. I want to go to school, I want to study, I want to play, I want to become a doctor and I want to run. I want to run fast without any difficulty in breathing." The way he told her his wishes, a stab of pain pierced through her heart. She felt at loss of words.
What's she supposed to tell him? That she'd failed to look out for him? That she'd failed as a sister? That she couldn't cure his illness because she doesn't have enough money to pay for his surgery? That she was nothing but a poor, good for nothing girl? A tear glistened on her cheek as she understood his feelings.
She'd decided what she would do now. She was ready for the sacrifice. She's ready to do anything for her brother. Because David had at least accepted her with her condition and her brother. He decided to take his full responsibility. So what else did she need now, to know that he loved her.
She called him in the afternoon. "Hey, umm David can I talk to you for a minute?" She confirmed.
"Yes, sure. Is it about my offer?" He asked.
"Ohh, then would you mind if I stop by at your place in an hour? We can talk about this over coffee?" He suggested.
"Umm, sure. Why not." She accepted.
"Wonderful. See you in an hour then." He hung up.
She's a nerve-wracking wave right now. Fidgeting all the way her actions had become clumsy. She wasn't ready for this yet, but for her brother's sake she's ready to go to any extent.
David knocked on the door and within seconds the door opened revealing the beauty of his dreams.
"Hello beautiful." He greeted her with a beautiful bouquet of roses. "These are for you. Everytime I look at them, they remind me of you, of your beautiful red cheeks."
She blushed at his comments. "Thank you." She smiled politely at him.
"So, what's got you so antsy today?" He asked casually sitting on the sofa.
"Umm nothing." She told him.
"Have you decided anything yet?" He was tensed.
"So what is it?" He asked, carefully observing her every move.
"It's a yes." She said and he almost squealed in excitement, which hardly lasted for a few seconds when she said, "but."
"But what?" He asked, annoyingly.
"But before our marriage, you've to give me in writing that you'll pay for Jake's treatment." She told him.
A cunning smile appeared on his face as he moved close to her. "Of course, anything for you my love."
