Joey

As soon as I left that store I knew I should have said more to her but I knew better than that. She just lost her husband a year ago and though I wanted to be the friend that helped her out of her sadness, I also wanted to be more than a friend to her.

I’d always thought of her as a beautiful independent women. In high school she didn’t really pay attention to any of the boys. She was hell bent on getting out of here. I mean sure, she has boyfriends but she did spend too much time on them.

She had dated on of those boys on my soccer team and he often bragged about how awesome she was in bed. I never knew if what he was saying was actually true or not or if he was just being an ass. But it really bothered me.

She never paid any attention to me even though I was around her often. Cash, my best friend dated her sister Bella. So I was around a lot for the parties and sporting events. I always tried to be a gentlemen when she was around but she never led on that I was anything more than a nice friend. Well sober she didn’t anyways. One time she had a little too much to drink at a party. She swayed her hips to the music, got up on the tables and danced like crazy. Her sister, Bella, and Cash were pretty loaded too and they danced with her. I had a couple drinks but not too many.

I had just been sitting there watching them, when she noticed me watching and gave me that wicked smile.

“Come dance with us Joey!”she yelled over the music with her finger pointed at me.

“Yeah, don’t be such a bum!” Cash drunkenly yelled

I thought about it for too long bc she got off the table then and came towards me. She had a little sway in her step from too much alcohol but she got to me she put her hands on my chest and leaned in close.

“Please Joey, please come dance with me.” She begged with a smile.

Her blue eyes hid behind her dark lashes as she closed her eyes for a second. I thought for a second she might kiss me but a second later she was dragging me back to dance with them. This time on the ground.

She was wearing a white bohemian dress that came to about her mid thigh. And when she moved too quickly it would come up just enough to see the bottom of her butt. I tried not to stare but she was beautiful. With her her black straight hair and her tanned skin.

We danced for awhile longer in between songs she did shots of tequila with the others.

After each shot she got a little closer to me. She rubbed her ass on me and grinding on me occasionally. God if she wasn’t so drunk right now I’d love to lay her down in the bed of my truck and make love to her. She put her arms around my neck and pulled me to have a seat with her over in a more quiet area by a fire.

“Joey..”

I looked up at her from the fire.

“I just.. I didn’t... I’ve had fun with you tonight”

“Yeah me too” I didn’t know what else to say. I wanted her so bad and I knew it wasn’t the right time. She’s had too much to drink.

She came over and sat on my lap. She must have felt that I was a little hard bc she moved around a little to get and seemed a little unsure if she should go back to her seat.

She continued to drink out of her solo cup and look at the fire. She turned to look at me once and I caught her eyes. She looked like she wanted me to take control but I knew I shouldn’t.

Around 11pm the tequila had caught up to her. I could tell from the change in her face.

“I think I should go home now.”

“I can drive you home, just let me tell Cash and Bella. I’ll bring you to my truck first though.”

I brought her over to the truck rolled down the window so she could get some air and helped her in.

“I’ll be right back” I don’t think she heard me and she looked like she was going to be sick so I’d better hurry up.

I found Bella and Cash, they were making out on Cash’s take gate.

“Hey guys, Emma doesn’t feel to good so I’m going to take her home. You guys have a ride? Or do you want me to come back and pick you up?”

“You can’t take her home! My parents don’t know we are drinking! You can’t let them find out!” Bella yelled slurring her words.

I looked at Cash wondering what we do now.

“Just take her to my parents lake house, it’s not too far from here and they won’t mind or tell anyone. That’s where they think I am now anyways.”

“Okay. I’ll come back for you guys.”

“No that’s fine, Tuck said he’d bring us back. He hasn’t been drinking.”

Cash threw me the key and I headed on my way. Once I got back to the truck I saw Emma hunched over with the door to the truck open puking. She was holding herself up with the door.

“Em, you okay? We are going to go back to Cash’s lake house.”

Silence again.

I held her hair out her face as she puked again. After a little while of not puking I picked her up and put her in the truck. I drove slowly to the lake house as to not make her sick again.

She had passed out on the way back so once there I unlocked the house turned on some lights a found the bed. I went back to the truck and carried her in. As I carried her in bridal style she whispered “love you” with her eyes closed. I laid her down on the twin bed and made my way to the other twin bed next to her. I’d just stay until early morning to make sure she was alright.

I heard Cash and Bella come in a couple hours later. They were loud and drunk but they must have found the master bedroom with no problems because soon after I heard the noises of love making through the walls.

I wish that could be me and Em.

The next morning was awkward. I had woke up early and sat outside by the lake. She came out after a little while and looked like she had just showered. Her hair was wet and thrown up into a messy bun.

“Hey thanks for last night. Bella said you helped out a lot. Sorry you had to see me that way.”

“I’d do it again Em.” I said softly

That night was a long time ago. But people say that what they say drunk is really how they feel. Maybe that’s true.
