The horror I felt was clearly expressed on Judy Miller's stunned face. What the hell was she doing in Anthony's side yard, staring at us through the window? And how long had she been watching while I had one breast out and Anthony's mouth on me?
He grabbed my wrist and yanked me stumbling along until we were out of her view, barely giving me a chance to pull the strap up and cover myself.
"Did she see us?" I asked, which was pointless. Of course she had, and his dark expression confirmed it. I tried to bolt, not having any plan, but he grabbed me. "Stay here. I'll throw on a shirt and then... handle this." His voice was soothing and calm.
I stared up at him. Even though he was looking down at me, it was clear I wasn't really registering. I could see the gears spinning in his head, working. He was too focused on figuring out what to do.
I shook off his hold and went to the bedroom, needing to leave if that would somehow help our situation. "I should get dressed too."
He didn't argue. He followed me to the bedroom, and he moved must faster than I did. He grabbed a t-shirt from a drawer, yanked it on, and gave me a serious look. "Stay put, okay? I've got this."
I heard him go downstairs and a pair of footsteps came through the front door.
"Her car's in the driveway?"
"Well, when no one answered the door, I thought she'd spent the night with Peyton while you weren't home. I assumed you're a good father who doesn't allow that sort of thing."
"What sort of thing'?"
"You know what I mean. Letting your son's teenage girlfriend sleep over."
"First off, Riley isn't Peyton's girlfriend."
"Well, I'd certainly hope not."
"And she's an adult. Second, how I raise my son isn't really your business. Did I ask you to come into my yard and look through my windows?"
"I was doing you a favor! I thought you'd want to know that girl spent the night, because it's so inappropriate. Lordy, I had no idea just how inappropriate it really was."
"She's a child. What are you doing with her?"
I leaned up against the wall, completely speechless.
"That's definitely none of your business."
"This is why you're not interested? I'm not young enough for you?"
"No," Anthony snapped. "I'm not interested in you, because of you. I've tried to be polite, but that ended the second you chose to trespass on my lawn and invade my privacy. No more visits, Judy. Unless it's an emergency, you stay on your side of the property. Understood?"
"You're unbelievable. Does Peyton know what you're doing?"
"Come over here again and it'll be harassment."
"Oh, don't you worry. You won't be seeing me again... But her? Really, Anthony? You're taking advantage of that girl and should be ashamed of yourself."
"I think we're done here, and I'd like you to leave."
I grabbed my overnight bag, and went to the kitchen. He looked deep in thought. I wanted to stay but I needed to go. "I should go."
He looked at me over his shoulder, and just the look on his face made my heart hurt.
"How much of that did you hear?"
"Don't listen to her."
Was he telling me or himself?
"We need to tell Peyton about us."
"He's in Virginia."
"When he gets back."
"I don't think it's a good idea."
He raised an eyebrow, clearly irritated. "So you think he should hear it from Judy?"
I shrugged. "I should go."
"Wait. Riley. You know you're acting like a child right now, right? We can't avoid this."
I turned around and glared at him, squeezing the handle of my bag. "I'm a child now? I thought you told her I was an adult."
"I said acting like one. There's a difference."
"I have to go."
"You know what? Fine. I think that's a good idea."
I feel like he's giving up on me. On us.
"Last night was great, and I don't want to ruin that. But I..."
"I get it, Anthony. Maybe we shouldn't have even started."
"What?" The look on his face went from irritation to complete shock.
"This was a bad idea. It's better off that we part our ways."
"Wait. Riley, I...."
I walked past him and shut the front door, heading for my car. I sighed as I turned on the engine and backed out of the driveway.
I got changed as soon as I got home to go to work. Your acting like a child. If that's how he really feels, fuck him. I shouldn't have gotten involved with him. Period. I wouldn't be in this position right now.
During my lunch break, my phone vibrated.
Peyton: I miss you.
I hit the clear button and put my phone back down on the table. I can understand. He's alone in Virginia without any friends, but did he really miss me? I was around him for months and he never gave a single shit about it.
After a long rest of the day at the animal hospital, I passed on getting dinner with Jasmine, needing to go home and take a shower. Not because I was dirty, but to release my emotions safely.
I loved my job. I wanted with all of my heart to be a veterinarian. But some days were tough, and this morning I had to watch a family say goodbye to their German Shepard. I was on the verge of crying as much as they were.
As I got out of the shower, I saw a message on my phone.
Anthony: What are you doing tonight?
I threw my phone on the bed, debating on if I even wanted to answer. I'm still hurt from this morning. God fucking damn it.
Anthony: I have one more patient and I'm done.
Anthony: Talk to me... what's going on...
Riley: It doesn't matter.
Anthony: It does to me :) Come to the hospital.
Anthony: Park in the garage. We'll go back to my place so we can talk and so you can get to see me in action.
I felt completely helpless and speechless.
Anthony: I need to see you.
Anthony: It's been a long day, and I've thought about you all day, Riley.
Riley: Fine... I'll be there in twenty minutes.
