Chapter Eleven: The Ring

Abraham watched his partner, as the man looked at the variety of rings in the jewelry store, a few blocks from their hotel. They had left Ariel to lie in the sun at the pool, so it looked as though they were on vacation. Abraham hadn’t known where they were going until they had walked into this store.

“Let me see that one.” Luka said with a soft voice.

Abraham leaned on the counter so that he could look at his partner. Luka turned to him and smiled. Light blue eyes, Lizzie.

“Is Luka planning to propose?” He asked as he watched the girl look back at the rings.

“He already did.” Lizzie said as she placed the ring on the tip of Luka’s pinkie finger and looked at it in the light.

“Oh?” Abraham asked, shocked. Why hadn’t they told him?

“Oh, I wasn’t supposed to tell you, sorry. Luka wanted to.” Lizzie said as she set the ring down on the counter. “That one.” She said as she pointed to another ring.

“Lizzie.” Abraham said in a whisper.

She turned to him with the brightest smile he has ever seen on his partner’s face.

“Why are you here?”

“Luka wanted a girl’s opinion.” She said as she looked back at the rings.

Abraham sighed; this is going to take some time to get used to. Ariel was taking it in stride, though. Well, she had been sleeping with both Luka and Lukas, not knowing. Maybe she’s happy she doesn’t have to choose; because she gets them both.

Abraham grunted, and how the hell is that going to work when they have kids?

Can it be passed down to their kids?

Abraham looked up at his partner when Lizzie squealed with excitement.

“This is it!”

Abraham looked at the ring on the tip of his partner’s pinky finger and whistled. It had an enormous diamond with sapphires and emeralds down the band. It was a pretty ring and very expensive.

“Why that one?” He asked as he looked at his partner.

“Because.” She said as she held it out to the clerk. “This one.”

The clerk nodded and took the ring, then placed it into a ring box and started typing on the register.

“Lizzie, don’t you think Luka should look at it first?”

Lizzie shook her head as she leaned in closer to Abe. “I want to surprise Luka too.”

Abraham stared at her. What was on the girl’s agenda here?

When Abraham heard the total for the ring, he almost passed out at his partner’s feet. Lizzie looked at Abraham with a sad look on her face.

“What is it? Do you not have enough?”

She held the wallet out to Abraham. Abraham looked inside and whistled, then looked up into her sad face.

“I can’t count.” She whispered as she held the wallet out to him.

Abraham laughed. Of course, he should have realized that. “I’ll get it for you.” He said with a smile as he took the wallet from her.

“Thank you.” She said with excitement, then kissed him on the cheek.

Abraham looked at the clerk and almost laughed.

“He’s an emotional guy.” Abraham said as he shrugged his shoulders and paid the clerk.

“I bet.” The clerk said in broken English.

Abraham turned to Lizzie and handed her the wallet and ring box. “Don’t lose that.”

“I won’t.” Lizzie said.

“When will Luka be back?”

“After we get Ariel back up to the room, I don’t want him peeking at the ring.” Lizzie said with excitement.

They turned to a shout at the door. Abraham couldn’t understand what they were saying, but by the masks they wore and the guns in their hands, they were holding up the store.

“You!” A man said when he saw the two Americans still on their feet. “Down on the floor.”

Lizzie stared at Abraham as he pulled her down to the floor.

“Abe.” She whispered.

“Just stay calm Lizzie, it will be over soon.” Abraham said as he covered his head with his hands.

“But you’re a cop…”

“Shh. Only in America, we are on vacation, remember?”

Lizzie cried as she covered her head with her hands.

“Give me that!” The man who could speak English said as he yanked the ring box out of Lizzie’s hand.

“No!” Lizzie cried out as she tried to take it back from the man.

“Stay down!” The man hollered as he hit her with the butt of his rifle.

Lizzie cried out as she fell to the floor.

“Damn it.” Abraham grumbled as he looked over at Lizzie.

Just as he knew it would happen, Luka’s eyes turned a bright red, and with a growl, Lukas was on his feet.

“I said, stay down!” The man hollered as he went to hit Lukas.

Without a word, Lukas took the rifle from his hands and smashed the man in the face with it. The man fell backward onto the floor, his hand holding his bloody nose. Sirens sounded outside as the police pulled up to the jewelry store.

“Time to go.” Another man said as he grabbed the man on the floor and dragged him out the door.

Lukas aimed the rifle at them and moved to pull the trigger.

“Lukas, don’t.” Abraham said as he got to his feet.

Lukas stopped and looked at Abraham. “He hurt Lizzie.”

“Think about what you’re about to do. This isn’t America.”

Lukas growled as he tossed the rifle onto the floor, then took off out the door. Abraham sighed as he followed his partner.

Lukas found the men in an alley, counting their ill-gotten goods, and stood at the start of the alley fuming.

“They have our ring.” He said as he watched the men.

“You can get another ring.” Abraham said as he caught up with him.

“Lizzie picked that ring out for a reason. And I want it back.” Lukas said with an evil growl.

Abraham stared at him. Ariel wasn’t kidding. Even without the voice changer, he can sound very demonic.

“Lukas!” Abraham hollered when the man took off at a speed that wasn’t natural.

Abraham watched in silence as Lukas beat the men, without killing a single one of them. The first guy threw a punch, which Lukas ducked and punched the guy in the stomach, then rolled over the guys back and kicked one of the other guys in the face, he then threw the guy he had punched in the stomach at another one.

The fourth guy pulled out a knife and tried to stab Lukas in the stomach. Lukas grabbed the guy’s wrist and shook his head at him, then used the guy’s hand and flung it up at his face, knocking the guy out with the butt of the knife.

When everyone was on the ground, Lukas went through the jewelry, money, and pockets until he found the ring. He then placed everything into the bags and walked back over to Abraham, tossing the ring box into the air and catching it.

“No one messes with my family.” Lukas said as he passed a stunned Abraham.

Abraham shook his head, then turned and caught up with Lukas. “What are you going to do with the jewelry and money?”

Lukas shrugged. “Their insurance will pay for it, and usually, I would keep it.”

“Lukas…”

“I said, usually. But today, I will deliver it to the back door, and we’ll be on our way.”

Abraham nodded with a sigh of relief.

Ariel walked into the penthouse and paused when she saw rose peddles on the floor. She followed the trail with her eyes and found that it led to Luka, who stood against the wall between the bedroom doors.

“Hello, Sweetheart.”

Scratch that, Lukas. “Hello, Lukas. What’s going on?”

“Just wanted to see you before I gave the reigns over to Luka.” He said as he walked towards her.

Ariel smiled as she set her bag down and walked toward him. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her so hard and passionately; she moaned as she melted against him.

“You’re so wonderful.” He breathed as he kissed her forehead. “Okay, Luka, do us proud.”

Ariel watched as Luka’s eyes turned the most beautiful blue.

“Hello, love.” He said with an enormous grin.

She smiled at him as she pulled his head down for a kiss. He groaned as his lips touched hers. If they didn’t stop now, he would take her to the bedroom before he got to do what he wanted to do.

He pulled back from her, out of breath, and touched her cheek. She watched him, a bright smile on her face.

“I know I asked you last night, but I thought it would be nice to ask you properly today.” He said as he got down on one knee.

She stared down at him as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring box. She covered her mouth as she watched him hold it up to her.

“Ariel, will you marry me?”

“Yes.” She said as tears streamed down her cheeks.

He grinned as he got to his feet and kissed her.

“The ring!” Lizzie hollered.

Ariel stared at Luka as his eyes turned back to his darker blue.

“What was that?” Luka asked as he looked into her eyes.

“That was Lizzie. She hollered, ‘The ring’.”

Luka laughed. “I let her pick it out.”

Ariel smiled. “How sweet.”

“I hope it was the right thing to do. Because Lizzie wouldn’t let me see it, she and Lukas had stayed in control most of the day, and as we waited for you to come through the door.”

Ariel laughed. “I hope she has excellent taste. She is only six.”

Luka laughed as he held the ring box towards her and opened it. Ariel covered her mouth as she stared at the ring.

The ring was exquisite. It had an enormous diamond in the center, and running down the band on either side of the diamond was sapphire, emerald sapphire emerald. It was perfect.

“Ariel?” He asked as he watched her face.

“Oh, Lizzie.” She breathed as she took the box from him.

“From what Abraham had told me; when they had let me out for a bit, they went through a lot for that ring. Apparently, they were robbed…”

“Ohmigod.” She breathed.

“Yeah, Lukas got the ring back, and the money and jewels and returned them to the jewelry store. And without killing anyone.”

Ariel smiled up at him as she pulled the ring from the box. “This is just perfect. Leave it to Lizzie to know what to get.”

“It is beautiful.” He said with a nod.

“It’s more than that. It was made for us.”

“How so?” He asked as he took the ring from her and placed it onto her finger.

“Sapphires and Emeralds.” She said as she looked up into his eyes.

His eyes shone as he understood. “Our birthstones, intertwined.”

She nodded, then threw herself into his arms. “I love you, Luka.”

He sighed as he held her close. “I love you too, Ariel.”
