Chapter Five: He’s Family

“Lukas.” Ariel whispered as her eyes fluttered open.

He looked down at her. “Hey, Sweetheart, I will be with you in just a moment.”

“No.” She breathed as she looked up into his red eyes.

“But he tried to kill you.” Lukas said with a frown.

“Work with Luka; you can find a middle.” She said with a groan, then passed out again.

Damn her. Always his conscience.

He turned his head to the man who had kidnapped and threatened the life of the only woman either he or his host, has ever loved, and threw him across the room. His body hit the far wall and fell to the floor, unconscious.

“Luka!” Abraham hollered from the floor, where he was still fighting off bad guys.

Lukas lifted Ariel into his arms and headed for the detective.

“We got what we came for, detective.” He said as he kicked a man out of his way. “Time to go.”

Abraham stared at his partner as the man just kicked his way out of the building. Abraham punched the man who came at him, then chased after his partner.

“Luka, stop!” Abe hollered as he ran across the street to where they had parked the car.

Lukas turned to his core’s partner. “My name is Lukas. And if you want to get out of here, before they call in reinforcement, you had better jump into the car.”

“Wait, Lukas, what?”

Lukas rolled his eyes as he laid Ariel in the backseat and fastened the belts around her, then climbed into the driver’s seat. He waited for the detective to jump into the front seat before he started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.

“What is going on?!” Abraham demanded as they drove down the road.

“Hold that thought.” Lukas said as he picked up Luka’s phone and hit the speed dial for their captain. “Yeah, Captain, we got Ariel, but you may want to send some men out here to clean up up the place.” He said as he gave the address. “No, there are no bodies. Who do you think I am, The Sapphire Dreamer?”

Lukas laughed as he hung up the phone. He turned his head and looked at Luka’s partner with a sigh.

“I guess it’s about time you know who I am.” He said as he turned his head back to the road.

“You’re The Sapphire Dreamer.” Abraham said as he continued to stare at his partner.

“That I am.” Lukas said with a nod. “But that’s not all.” He said as he pulled up to Ariel’s house and turned off the motor. He looked at Abraham and sighed. “Let me get Ariel situated inside; then, I can tell you whatever you need to know.”

“No, you will tell me now! You have been deceiving me for six years! Hell, maybe even longer.” Abraham growled as he grabbed hold of Lukas’s arm.

Lukas sighed as he pulled his arm from the man’s grasp. “Luka hasn’t deceived you.” He said as he got out of the car.

“Why are you talking about yourself in the third party?” Abraham demanded as he got out of the car.

“Come inside.” Lukas said as he walked up the walkway with Ariel in his arms.

Lukas balanced Ariel as he reached into his pocket to retrieve Luka’s copy of her key. He opened the door and headed straight for the bedroom. He laid Ariel on the bed and kissed her forehead, then turned and joined the detective in the living room.

“Luka, what is going on?!” Abraham demanded as he stopped pacing to glare at him.

“I’m Lukas.” Lukas said as he sat on the couch and laid his arms across the back of the sofa, then crossed his ankle over his knee.

“You keep saying that. What does that even mean?” Abraham asked with an angry growl.

“It means that at the moment, I’m not Luka.”

“What the hell, Luka!”

Lukas sighed. “You would understand this much better if you would call me by my name.”

“How the hell did you get those contacts into your eyes so fast? You were unconscious…”

“They’re not contacts.” Lukas said as he watched the man pace the living room again.

“Bull shit. No one can have eyes like that.” Abraham said with a growl.

Lukas chuckled. “Ariel calls me an enigma. She says that alters eyes don’t change this dramatically, and no one’s eyes can change to red. Yet here I am, red eyes and all. Maybe that’s why I like the show, Lucifer, so much.” Lukas said as he rubbed his chin with his fingers.

“You’re insane.” Abraham said as he stopped pacing and stared at his partner of over eight years.

“That’s what Ariel said when I first told her.” Lukas said as he studied the detective.

“She knew all along?” Abraham asked, shocked.

Lukas shook his head. “No. She found out a week ago; when I rescued her from that night club. The doctor had removed my mask in front of her. She had freaked out worse than you are. Of course, you haven’t slept with either me or Luka.” He studied the other man. “Or is there more to you and Luka…”

“God, you’re despicable.” Abraham said with a grunt.

Lukas laughed. “Not the first person to say that to me.”

“What you are saying is impossible and nuts.” Abraham said as he shook his head.

Lukas sighed as he moved his ankle off his knee and leaned forward. “I know you’ve heard of MPD.”

“What?” Abraham asked as he stared into the creepy-ass red eyes of The Sapphire Dreamer.

“Multiple Personality Disorder.”

“Are you trying to tell me you have multiple personalities?” Abraham asked, shocked.

“I don’t.” Lukas said as he watched the detective. “Luka does.”

“This is insane. What you are telling me is impossible!” Abraham hollered at him.

“But, it’s not.” A soft voice said from the hall.

They turned to the hall where Ariel stood, looking a bit dizzy. Lukas was on his feet, and at her side, so fast, Abraham’s mouth dropped. Lukas picked her up into his arms and kissed her.

“How many times have we told you to stay away from danger?” Lukas asked as he carried her to the couch and set her down, then sat next to her.

Ariel looked at Abraham as she leaned into Lukas’s shoulder. “I thought the same thing you’re thinking, Abraham.” She said as she pointed across the room to her laptop. “Can you get me my laptop, please, love?”

Lukas smiled, then kissed her forehead and stood up from the couch.

Abraham watched the two as they acted like this was a typical day, and Abraham hadn’t just discovered that his partner and best friend is a complete nutcase.

“Here you go, Sweetheart.” Lukas said as he handed Ariel her laptop.

“Thank you.” She whispered as she took it from him and opened it.

She typed a few strokes across the keyboard, then held the laptop out to Abraham.

“Take as much time as you need to read this.” She said as he took it from her.

Abraham sat in one of her overstuffed chairs to read, his eyes opening wide.

“Lukas, can you get me a glass of water, please?”

“Sure, Sweetheart.” He said as he kissed her lips.

He wasn’t ready to give the reins over to Luka, yet. He had missed her so much. Plus, if he switched now, it may freak Abraham out more than he already was. He laughed when he thought of the man’s reaction when he meets Lizzie.

Lukas returned to the living room and handed Ariel her glass of water, then held a beer out to Luka’s partner.

Abraham barely looked up from the computer as he took the beer and thanked Lukas.

Lukas nodded, then sat next to Ariel on the couch. She sighed with a bright smile when he laid back and pulled her against him. They sat in silence as Abraham read the findings on Ariel’s computer.

Two hours later, Ariel was sound asleep against Lukas, and Abraham looked up at them, his eyes wide with shock.

“Lengthy story.” Lukas said as he watched the detective.

“But how have you pulled it off?” Abraham asked as he closed the laptop and set it on the coffee table.

“Luka had had no clue. When I take over, he goes into like a coma where he has amnesia of anything I say or do.” Lukas said as he watched the other man.

“So, you have the severe one… I mean, Luka has the severe…”

“Yes.” Lukas said with a nod. “We have our own personalities. If you didn’t look at me, you would think we were three different people.”

“Three? Right, it said that you could have two or more personalities. Is that all you have, two?”

Lukas nodded. “Just me and Lizzie.”

“Lizzie?” Abraham asked, shocked.

Lukas laughed. “Very excitable and very emotional six-year-old little girl. For some an odd reason, she didn’t age as I did.”

“How old was Luka, when…”

“When we were created? Ten.”

“It said that most were either physically or sexually abused as children…” Abraham stopped talking as he shook his head. “But, his parents are so cool…”

“When Luka was ten, a man kidnapped and raped Luka and his friend for three days.” Lukas said with a sigh as he decided it would be okay for him to tell their story.

Abraham is family, after all.

Abraham sat in the overstuffed chair, sipping his beer as he watched Ariel and Lukas sleep on the couch. The story Lukas had told him, painted a large ass picture for him. No wonder the man had started killing evil people, the moment he had woken.

He looked at Ariel’s peaceful face and sighed. She had dramatically changed both men’s lives. Not only was she The Sapphire Dreamer’s conscience, but she was Detective Gunnar’s peacekeeper. If not for her, his partner’s life would be in turmoil. He had read an article that had said that men with MPD are more violent than women with it.

Also said that most men with MPD got locked away in prison, and no one ever checked them for the disorder. He shook his head as he closed his eyes and took another sip of his beer.

Abraham’s eyes popped open when he heard his partner’s voice. Man, they weren’t kidding about the difference in personalities. Why hadn’t he noticed it?

“Luka?” Ariel asked groggily.

“Oh, God, Ariel, you’re okay.” Luka said as he pulled Ariel into his arms and kissed her.

“Good to see you awake.” Ariel said as she held onto him.

Luka sighed with relief, Lukas had listened to him. He had saved their woman.

“Good to see you again, partner.” Abraham said as he watched the couple from his seat in the overstuffed chair.

Luka looked at his partner, his eyes opening wide.

Abraham laughed at the look on his partner’s face. “Don’t worry, Lukas and Ariel explained everything to me. I’m team Sapphire Dreamer now.”

Luka laughed as he held his hand out to his partner and best friend. “Good to have you on board.”

Luka groaned when a pain shot through his stomach.

“Luka, you’re hurt.” Ariel cried as she moved off him and pulled up his shirt.

She sucked in a shocked breath when she saw the dark bruises on his stomach and ribs.

“Just a broken rib or two. I’ll be fine.” Luka said as he leaned back on the couch.

“Those look pretty bad, partner. We should have you checked out at the hospital, just in case you have internal bleeding.” Abraham said as he got up out of the chair.

“I’ll be fine.” Luka protested.

“Why didn’t Lukas feel any of this?” Abraham asked as he helped his friend to his feet.

“Because Lukas has a high tolerance for pain.” Ariel said as she stood up from the couch and slipped her feet into her shoes.

“He must feel nothing, then.” Luka said as Abraham helped him to the door. “Because if he didn’t feel any of this, that I’m feeling now, his senses are blocked.”

“Probably.” Ariel said as she closed her front door and locked it. “It’s probably why he can fight, even after being beat. He doesn’t feel it.”

“No, I do.” Luka said with a grunt as Abraham helped him into the back seat.

“This is from when you were you.” Ariel said as she climbed into the back seat from the other side. “Before Lukas woke up.”

“Wish he had woken up sooner, this shit hurts like hell.” Luka said as he tried to breathe.

“Stay calm.” She whispered as she leaned her head against his shoulder.

“How was he?” Luka asked as he laid his cheek on her head.

“He was good.” She said with a smile. “As much as he wanted to kill their leader, he didn’t.”

Luka nodded. “Maybe we can work out a compromise.”

“I hope so.” She said with a nod. “Because I want both of my hero’s.”

He kissed the top of her head. “We’ll see.”

“You won’t start the pills again, will you?” She asked as she looked up at him.

He shook his head. “No. But that doesn’t mean I want him in my personal life.”

“We’re here.” Abraham said as he pulled up to the Emergency entrance and turned off the motor. When he got out, he hollered at someone who was standing outside.

“Need help over here!”
