Chapter Six: Hospital Fiasco

The hospital’s personnel ran to them and helped Abraham pull Luka from the car. They got a wheelchair and wheeled him into the hospital, leaving Ariel and Abraham behind, staring after them.

“Come on; there’s some stuff we need to fill out.” Abraham said as he took her by the arm and led her into the hospital.

Ariel filled out the paperwork, then turned them back into the nurse. It was a smart thing that she and Luka had exchanged information in case of emergencies like this. She went back to the waiting room and sat beside Abraham to wait.

Two hours later, a doctor walked into the waiting room. Since they were the only ones there, they knew he was there to tell them about Luka.

“Miss Lawson?” The doctor asked.

“Yes.” Ariel said with a nod as she watched the doctor.

“He had light internal bleeding; we were able to stop. A few broken ribs, and a bruised pancreas.”

“He’s okay?” She asked as she wrung her hands.

“He will be fine.” The doctor said with a nod. “What took you so long to get him here? The internal bleeding was already closing itself off.”

“He has a high threshold for pain. We didn’t know how bad he was until he moved wrong and it hurt.” She said, telling most of the truth.

“He’s a detective, right?”

“Yes, we both are.” Abraham said as he showed the man his badge. “We were on a case when a group of men attacked and beat us; he got the brunt of it.”

“Did you check his head?” Ariel asked when she remembered the man who had hit Luka in the back of the head with a two by four.

The doctor nodded. “He had complained about a headache, and we found a slight cut on the back of his head. We did some scans and found he has a concussion. Nothing major to worry about, but we’d like to keep him in the hospital for the next three days for observation.”

Ariel nodded. “Thank you, doctor.”

The doctor nodded, then turned and headed for the door. “You can see him as soon as we get him into his room.”

“Private room, if you have one.” She said before the doctor left.

The doctor waved acknowledgment before he left the room.

“We should have brought him in sooner.” Ariel said with a cry.

“With Lukas in control, we had no clue how bad the injuries were.” Abraham said as he hugged her.

“I should have at least checked his head.” She said with a frown.

“Ariel, don’t beat yourself up. He will be fine, basically cuts and bruises…”

“And a concussion, and internal bleeding…”

He sighed as he shook his head. “Let’s go see if they have him in his room yet.” He said as he led her from the waiting room.

“God, I’ve been here for two days, and it feels like an eternity.” Luka grumbled as he stared at the IV drip connected to his arm. “I’m so hungry; I could eat a whole cow.”

Ariel laughed as she kissed him. “When you get out of here, we will go to our restaurant and order you the biggest steak they have.”

He smiled as he kissed her again. “Deal.”

“Well, look at you two.” Davis said as he entered the room. “Like two peas in a pod, you two are.”

Luka smiled at his captain. “What’s up, captain?”

“I thought I’d check on you and see how you’re doing. But I see you have your own personal nurse.” Davis said as he winked at Ariel.

Ariel’s cheeks turned crimson as she turned and gathered her bag from the chair. “I’ll go to the cafeteria and let you two talk.” She said as she headed for the door.

“Bring me back a red ice pop since it’s the only damn thing I can eat here.” Luka grumbled.

Ariel smiled, then blew him a kiss before she left the room.

“I’m glad to see you two have gotten so close.” Davis said as he smiled at his detective.

“I’m thinking of asking her to marry me.” Luka said with a smile.

“A wedding. How nice.” Davis said with a nod.

“So, what’s going on, captain? I know you didn’t come here for the ice pops.”

“No.” Davis said as he shook his head, a sad look on his face. “A girl, matching Hannah’s description, washed up on the shores, in her home country.”

“No.” Luka said on a breath. “Ariel is going to die.”

“They won’t send us her body or pictures, so I think you three should go there and check it out.”

“Us three?” Luka asked as his eyes widened.

Does the captain know about my condition?

“You, Abraham, and Ariel.” Davis said as he eyed his detective.

“Oh, right, us three.” Luka said with a sigh of relief.

“Don’t mess this up, Luka.” He said as he headed for the door.

“What is there to mess up, captain? We are just a few tourists; who happen to want to see the body of a girl who may or may not be our friend.” Luka said with a grin.

Davis grunted as he left the room.

Dear Miss Lawson,

I hope you didn’t think this was the end. I promised to kill Detective Gunnar, whether he confessed to those murders or not. It was just going to make it easier to blame it on suicide. But now that I know he is The Sapphire Dreamer, and is very much alive, my boss is going to love this. It will be a bonus if we could get you too, but we’ll settle for the detective, for now.

Ariel stared at the email, her eyes widening in shock.

They wouldn’t, would they? In a hospital?

She shoved her phone into her pocket and stood from the table. She had been eating, but now she needs to get back to Luka. She ran from the cafeteria and was out of breath by the time she got back to Luka’s room.

“No ice pops?” He asked as he stared at her empty hands.

“We’ve got to get you out of here!” She hollered as she rushed to his bed.

“What is going on, Ariel?” He asked as he watched her panicked face.

“Read.” She said as she pulled her phone from her pocket and shoved it into his hand.

“This could be a trick, Ariel.” He said when he finished reading the email.

“I don’t care if it is a trick. I’m getting you out of here!”

“Ariel, calm down.” Luka said as he took hold of her hand.

She took a deep breath as she looked at his hand.

“They’re coming for you.” She said as a tear slid down her cheek.

“Call Abraham.” He said as he handed her back her phone.

She nodded and speed-dialed the detective. She told him what was in her email, and he told her to stay there. He will be there soon, with backup.

She sighed as she collapsed into the chair beside the bed.

“Everything will be fine.” Luka said with a smile as he reached his hand out to her. The IV pulled, but he didn’t care, he wanted to hold her hand.

“We can’t wait any longer.” Ariel said as she looked at her watch. “For all we know, they could already be in the hospital.”

“Ariel, this isn’t staying calm.”

“Screw calm. I want Lukas.” She said as she looked at him.

He stared at her. “You what?”

She softly growled. “That came out wrong. I want Lukas out, now, he has a high tolerance for pain, and we need to get you the hell out of here, now!”

He smiled as he pulled her to him and kissed her. She sighed against him, and her anger simmered the smallest bit.

“No, sir, we don’t have a Detective Dog Shit on this floor.” They heard a nurse at the station say.

Ariel grunted as she turned to look at the open door.

“I could kill Lukas for starting that name.” Luka grumbled as he looked over her shoulder at the open door.

“You would be killing yourself.” She said as she turned back to him. “I have no clue how to take this thing out, where it doesn’t do any damage, so it’s coming with.” She said as she grabbed hold of the IV stand and pulled the bed away from the wall.

“Ariel, wait.” He said as she moved to the head of the bed and started pushing the bed towards the open door.

“No waiting, I’m done waiting.” She said as she pushed the bed out the door and turned to the left.

Whoops, wrong way. She thought when she saw two men standing at the nurse’s station.

She can’t turn around in this narrow ass hall; she will need to pull. She started pulling the bed down the hall, away from the men.

“Ariel.” Luka whispered when he saw the men turn and look at them.

“Crap.” She hissed as she moved to the foot of the bed and started pushing.

She hit the wall with the side of the bed and grunted.

“Stop!” The men behind them hollered as they chased after them.

“Not happening.” She hissed through her teeth as she pushed the bed as fast as she could.

She sighed with relief when she saw the elevator doors open. She shoved the bed into the elevator, then started pressing all the buttons on the box. The doors closed just as the two men caught up to them. She smiled at them as the doors closed in their faces.

She turned to Luka with a half-smile. “We’ll get out of here.”

“Why are all the floors lit up?”

“Oh, I figured it would throw them off if it landed on each floor.”

He laughed. “You watch too many movies.”

“Maybe, but it was all I could think of.”

“Get off on the top floor.” He said as he watched the numbers.

“Third floor.” She said as the doors opened, then closed.

When they got to the top floor, she pulled the bed out into the hall, then moved to the head of the bed and started pushing the bed down the hallway.

“There!” A man yelled when he spotted them.

“Not the right stop.” Ariel said as she turned a corner and slammed into the wall.

“Didn’t say we would escape them. But at least there are no innocent victims up here.”

“Oh.” She said as she pushed the bed around another corner. She skidded to a stop when she came to a dead end.

“We could use Lukas right now.” She said as she looked at him.

“We have made no arrangements yet.” He said as he looked at her.

“I don’t care. We need Lukas…” She stopped talking when he pulled her to him and kissed her.

“Maybe if you asked nicely.” He said as he smiled at her.

“Luka.” She said with a puff of air.

“Don’t ask me…”

“Lukas, get your ass out here now!” Ariel hollered in his face.

Ariel watched Luka’s eyes turn from blue to red as Luka switched to Lukas.

“No need to shout, Sweetheart, I can hear you.” Lukas said as he grinned at her, then pulled her closer and kissed her.

She sighed, then pulled away from him. “We have men after us.”

“Of course, we do.” He said as he pulled the blanket off his legs. He looked down at the hospital gown and grunted. “How am I supposed to fight in this?”

She grinned as her eyes turned a dark green. “I wouldn’t mind watching you fight in that.”

“I’m sure you wouldn’t, Sweetheart.” He said as he grinned at her. “Does this thing even have a back?”

“I don’t know.” She said on a breath as she imagined him fighting the two men after them, his ass cheeks glistening in the hospital lighting.

“Ariel, get your damn head out of the gutter.” Lukas said with a laugh as he pulled himself out of bed.

He looked at the IV, then yanked on the tube.

“Don’t.” She said as she leaped over the bed to stop him.

He looked at her with a grin and dropped the IV needle, then pulled the tape off his hand.

“We’ll get to that later.” He said, his eyebrows wagging up and down.

She grunted as she pulled herself off the bed.

“Don’t make that noise, Sweetheart; I need to concentrate.”

“Concentrate on what?”

“On how I will do this without killing anyone.” He said with a grin.

“Just do what you need to do to get us out of here.” She said as she watched him.

He looked at her. “Are you giving me permission to be The Sapphire Dreamer?”

She watched him, then nodded.

He grinned as he moved around the bed and took her into his arms and kissed her.

She groaned as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

“There they are!” A man hollered as they came around the corner and spotted them.

Lukas continued to grin as he pulled away from her. “Let the games begin.” He said before he turned from her and walked towards the two men, coming towards them.

“Come on, detective, make this easier on yourself. For the girl’s sake.” A man said as he pulled a gun out from his side and pointed it at him.

“Yeah, I mean, we could have just slid this into you two and been done with it by now.” The other man said as he pulled a large knife out and flipped it in his hand.

“Don’t threaten my woman, or you will regret it.” The Sapphire Dreamer said with an angry growl.

The two men laughed as they looked past him at the girl who still stood beside the bed, watching them.

“Let’s get this over with, so we can go home, I’m starving.” The man with the gun said with annoyance.

“You won’t be making it home for dinner.” The Sapphire Dreamer said as he watched the two men.

Ariel shivered at the sound of his voice. Even without the voice disguiser, he still sounded demonic when he was angry.

Both men laughed as they looked at each other than at Lukas. The man with the gun aimed the gun at Lukas and pulled the trigger.

The Sapphire Dreamer was in front of the two men so fast, both men screamed like little girls. Dreamer grabbed hold of the arm that held the gun and bent the elbow back, making the man scream in pain.

The gun fired towards Ariel, making her scream as she ducked beside the bed.
