SERENITY

The following day, after Daddy drops me off at college, I'm pacing back and forth outside of the classroom, reading every word in my notebook.

You can do this, Serenity. Daddy told so.

"Hey girl."

I look up and see Victoria standing next to me.

"Oh hey!"

"You ready for this exam?"

"Yes."

"I heard it's on the computer program for this class and your exam is graded automatically! We don't get to see the right and wrong answers during the exam of course, but we don't have to wait! How about we get some drinks afterwards if we both pass?"

"It will be only noon."

"So what?! This exam is huge! It'll be our way of celebration!"

"Okay. Sounds good."

We suddenly hear our professor's voice, announcing the exam was about to start so we sat down at our regular seats and anxiously waited.

As the test began, I made sure I remembered everything that was in my notes. Just as I started to think about Tyson, I shook the thought out of my head. Focus Serenity.

*2 hours later: As I finished the last question, my heart dropped to my feet when I looked at my score.

"What'd you get?"

"A 99!"

"I got an 85! YES! Alcohol, here we come!"

I got into Victoria's car and we headed to the local bar that opens at 11:30. It was already filled by the time we got in there with only four tables left.

"Damn, these alcoholics must really like this place!"

After multiple rounds of Tequila shots and 8 beers, we both stumbled out of the bar and walked to Victoria's car. "What time is it?"

"10 pm."

"Holy shit. We were here all day!"

"I know."

"We were celebrating, Serenity!"

"Oh, I know! It was awesome! I had so much fun!"

We were stopped by one of the employees in the bar and they arranged for a taxi to take us home.

"So, what are your plans for the rest of the day?"

I sat back and shrugged.

"Not sure what Da... Tyson has planned for us."

"Girl, I'm so happy you got the hell out of your house and you're with your man! That's awesome."

"It was really unexpected actually. I didn't know he'd do that for me."

"He seems like a true gentleman."

"Oh my gosh Tori, he is. I almost told him I loved him this morning."

"Really?!"

"Almost. But I didn't."

"Why?!"

"What if he doesn't feel the same way?"

"Serenity. If a man is taking all of his free time to be with you and to spoil the living shit out of you, that's true love."

"We'll see."

The taxi first showed up at Victoria's house then dropped me off.

Tyson's car was surprisingly in the driveway. He said he was coming home late tonight."

Shrugging, I stumbled up the stairs, nearly seeing double. As I tried to reach for the doorknob, I missed the first time but the second attempt was successful. Tyson got up from the couch as soon as he saw me and raised his eyebrows.

"Where the hell were you?"

"What do you mean?"

"Were you drinking?!"

"Yes," I smiled.

"You could've gotten hurt!"

"Tyson, I..."

"Serenity, you need to tell me where you are at all times!"

"I was with Tori! We were fine. We went to one of the local restaurants for some drinks. We both passed our psychology final and it was our form of celebration."

"It doesn't matter! What the fuck Serenity!"

"Just because I'm younger doesn't mean I can't make my own choices, Tyson!"

"I'm saying this out of concern, baby."

"I know, but I can take care of myself. I don't always need you to protect me!"

"Serenity, I..."

"No. You clearly don't trust me!"

"I dropped you off this morning at 9:45 and you get home at 10:30? 13 hours! I almost called the cops!"

"Not necessary."

"But, I..."

"I think we need our space for the rest of the night."

"I wanted to reward you tonight to make up from last night."

Scowling at him, I stomped up the steps without letting him say anything else and slammed the door of his son's bedroom. God! Can't he trust me one time?! I'm 19 years old!

I heard a knock on the door.

"Serenity, open the door."

I laid down and fell asleep fairly quickly.

*The next morning: I woke up groggy and hungover. As I got out of bed, I heard Tyson talking. He must be on the phone.

Sneaking out into the hall, I was able to hear his whole conversation.

"Dude, you can't let release me from this case."

"Tyson, you're getting too close in this one."

"I'm trying to protect Serenity."

"Your focus is not only on her, but her father. You know all of the shit he's involved with. It's illegal."

"I love her, dude."

"It doesn't matter. You're getting a little too close on this one. I'm releasing you from this case."

Once I heard full silence, I quietly shut the door before locking it and sat on the bed in complete shock. Tyson lied to me. He told me I was moving out just because he was abusive. He said he'd never lie to me. Ever, yet he does this behind my back? I feel completely betrayed and used. I thought I loved him, but I can't love someone whose a liar.

I heard him scurrying around upstairs and then went back down and shut the door.

Good. He won't be home, so I can get the hell out of here.
