I get weird looks as I enter the classroom. I think back to what Azula told me yesterday. She just told me to be careful which isn’t much of a warning. I glance at Tyler as I sit in my seat.
Do you know what’s going on?
There’s a rumor going around that you’re actually girl and you were absent from school last week because you went into heat. Oh.
That last part is true.
Are you okay?
Yeah, Amethyst helped me get through it. Tyler smiles at me.
Oh she did, did she? He nudges my shoulder. So I guess you had a great weekend. I can’t believe my boy lost his virginity.
Shut up. I push his arm away from me. And I’m not a virgin.
Yeah, I know.
I mean, ugh, never mind. Are you going to the pack run, tonight?
You must be crazy if you think I’m going to miss out on the only fun thing our pack does. Are you skipping it?
I don’t know yet. It’s during pack runs that newly shifted wolves shift in front of the pack for the first time. I never asked Amethyst if she was going to the pack run. I’ll just ask her during lunch.
I walk through the halls of the school as I head to the nearest bathroom. I’m turning around a corner when I feel two sets of hands grab me. I slammed against the wall and held there.
“I always thought that you were too pretty to be a boy,” a black haired wolf says.
He’s alpha ranked, and I recognize him as someone in my grade. I don’t think we have any classes together. He squeezes my face as his two friends keep me still. I’m not sure what he wants from me. I just hope they beat me up and leave me alone so I can use the bathroom in peace.
My eyes widen in fear as he unbuckles my pants. I begin struggling to break their hold on me and stop his actions. My efforts makes no difference. My pants are on the ground faster than I can blink. He winces. The two wolves holding me hisses as if they’re in pain.
“Ah shit,” he says. “Who the fuck did this to you?”
I stay silent and shake my head. Tears falls down my face. He pulls my pants back up.
“Shit, dude. I’m sorry.” The two wolves holding me releases me. “Did we hurt you?”
I stare at his brown eyes in confusion before looking away. Is Amethyst nearby? Maybe she has messed with their minds. I just don’t know. I feel like I’m in an alternate universe. I shake my head. Then they start fixing my rumbled clothes. They step back.
“I’m Jacob,” the black haired wolf says. He gestures to his friends. “That’s Connor and Brandon.”
Brandon is the wolf standing on my right. He’s beta ranked. He has light brown hair and matching eyes. Connor is also a alpha rank wolf. He has blond hair and green eyes. Both of them are large wolves, but Connor is leaner than Brandon. All of them are sporting the same short haircut that all dominant wolves share.
“What were you doing in the halls,” Connor asks.
“G-going to t-the b-bathroom,” I answer.
“Oh.” Connor puts his arm around my shoulder and drags me around the corner to the bathroom I was originally going to Brandon and Jacob go into the bathroom.
“Hurry and get the fuck out,” I hear Jacob say from inside. A couple of people walk out the bathroom door. Jacob and Brandon step looking proud of themselves.
“You can go in there now,” Brandon says with his chest puffed out. “We’ll make sure nobody bothers you.”
Connor pushes me forward. I enter the bathroom and do my business. The whole time I feel confused. I don’t understand what just happened. I sigh. I think it just might be better for me to not question because the more I do the more confused I end up feeling. After washing and drying my hands, I step out of the bathroom where Brandon then puts his arm around my shoulder.
“What’s your number,” he asks. I look at him surprise. “My sister is friends with your younger sister. Anyways, you can call one of us if any wolf gives you shit.” I tell them my number. They pull out their phones and save my number. I feel my phone vibrate. I take it out and save their numbers. Before I know it, we are standing in front of my classroom door.
“We need to speak to your mate,” Jacob says. “I know you meet with her during lunch. We’ll meet you after class.”
They walk off without another word. I enter the classroom and sit in my seat. I glance at Tyler.
You won’t believe what just happened to me...
Just as they said they show up after my third period class. I briefly glance at their looming forms before looking away. Tyler glares at them.
“You guys are dead wolves walking,” he says to them. “I suggest you become rogues. You’ll have a better chance of living.” I say nothing as I walk to our table. Once there, I grab Amethyst’s hand, both to calm myself and her, in case anything gets out of hand.
She gives me a questioning look before looking at Tyler. He shrugs before joining Sapphire at the table. Amethyst stares at the three ranked wolves and raises a brow. Jacob clears his throat and steps forward.
“We wanted to say that we’re sorry,” he says. Amethyst narrows her eyes at him.
“For what,” she asks. He tells her what happened. “And you thought it would be a smart idea to show your face to me after you sexually assault my mate?”
“We weren’t trying to sexually assault him,” Brandon protests. “We just wanted to see if he was a girl.”
“And what would you have done if he had been a girl?” Her voice is calm as she asks her question, but I can feel the rage simmering beneath the calm facade. She holds my hand tighter.
“Nothing. We were just curious.”
“For what? What he’s got going in his pants in none of your business.”
“You’re right,” Connor says, smacking Brandon in the back of the head. “That’s why we wanted to make it up to you.”
“Oh really?” She smiles at them. “Tell me how.”
“We’ll guard him.”
“How do I know you won’t do something like this again?”
“Jacob wants to redeem himself in front of his crush and we support him.” What?
“How many time do I have to tell you I don’t have a crush on him,” Jacob says, turning to his friends. “And I’m not gay.”
“Bro, you were checking out Tyler’s ass on the way here,” Brandon says.
“I can’t blame you,” Sapphire says. “Tyler does have a nice ass.”
“I wasn’t checking out his ass,” Jacob argues, his face turning red.
“You liking dick isn’t going to change how we think of you,” Connor says.
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t just hear all that,” Amethyst says. “Mate, do you have a problem with them guarding you?” I shake my head. “Okay, I will trust you to watch my mate.”
I stare at my mate in confusion. Her rage has not lessened by even a little, but she’s talking like she’s completely fine. Maybe she’s angry about something else? I can’t help but feel suspicious of her actions.
“Thank you,” Jacob says. “We will not disappoint you.”
“I want you to meet up with me after lunch,” Amethyst says. “To work out how you’re going to protect my mate. Tyler, you’ll make sure to get him to fourth period.”
“But-,” Tyler start but then lets out a hiss. “Yeah, no problem.”
“Now leave. You’re cutting into my mate’s lunch, and the food is getting cold.”
Jacob, Brandon, and Connor leave without saying another word. We sit down, and Amethyst starts feeding me. Sapphire burst out laughing.
“Oh my goddess,” she laughs. “‘Jacob wants to redeem himself in front his crush and we support him.’ I’m dead. Oh, that was too funny.” My face reddens as I try to ignore Sapphire.
“I wonder how many secret admirers your mate has,” Tyler says. Amethyst frowns but says nothing. I turn to Tyler and Sapphire and try to signal to them that they should shut up.
After fourth period class, Brandon, Connor, and Jacob stand outside my classroom door looking battered and bruised. I know that Amethyst was responsible for them looking like this. My hands twitch to touch them and take away their injuries, but I instinctively know that would only make things worse for them later.
School goes by in flash. As I get in Amethyst’s car, I realize that I never asked her if she was going to the pack run. I put my seatbelt on and face my mate.
“Amethyst,” I start. She hums her acknowledgment. “Are you going to the pack run, tonight?”
“I am,” she answers.
“How are you going to interact with everyone after you shift. I know you can trick everyone to see you shift.” She smiles then hums in her throat.
“It’s a little hard to explain, but you don’t have to worry about that. I have a an ace up my sleeve. I won’t tell you what it is because it’ll be more fun to surprise you.”
“But I want to know now.”
“Nope, not telling.”
“Please.” The air in the car cools, and I find myself staring into the frosty eyes of Azula. She gives me a predatory smile.
"What are you willing to do to get me to talk?”
She cups the nape of my neck. I shiver at her touch. The last time I spoke to Azula she had a regal air to her that made her intimidating to me, but now she looks like she wants to eat me up. And I can’t say that I’m opposed to her doing that. My throat is suddenly dry as I try to answer her question. I place my hand on her arm.
“Uh, p-pretty please?” It was something I’ve seen Kate do to our parents and Ellie. She usually got her way when she pleaded with them. I think work because they like Kate. I know Amethyst likes me and I think Azula does too, so in theory this should work.
"After I shifted early, I gained a new ability. I can shape-shift into any living mammal. So in theory, I’ll be able to shift into a wolf.” She suddenly switches back to Amethyst. “And she says I’m whipped.”
“Sorr-.” I stop myself from apologizing. Her thumb rubs against my throat.
“You haven’t done anything wrong.” She stops in front of my house. She kisses my cheek. “I’ll pick you up later.”
